    CHUAN JIANG1,2, CHUNLEI LIU1,3, XI YAO1,3, JINGYA SU1,2, WEI LU1,3, ZHENGBO WEI3,*, YING XIE1,2,*

    Oncology Research, Vol.32, No.12, pp. 1935-1948, 2024, DOI:10.32604/or.2024.052244 - 13 November 2024

Abstract Background: Head and neck squamous cell carcinoma (HNSCC) is a prevalent form of cancer globally, with chemoresistance posing a major challenge in treatment outcomes. The efficacy of the commonly used chemotherapeutic agent, cisplatin, is diminished in patients with poor prognoses. Methods: Various bioinformatics databases were utilized to examine Carboxylesterase 1 (CES1) gene expression, clinicopathologic features, patient survival analysis, and gene function. An organoid model of HNSCC was established, along with the induction of drug-resistant HNSCC in the organoid model. CES1 expression was assessed using qRT-PCR and Western Blot, and differential markers were identified through transcriptome… More >

Epidemiological and clinical characteristics of lung cancer in Saudi Arabia: a retrospective study in single oncology center

    YOUSEF KATIB1,*, NASSER MULLA2

    Oncology Research, Vol.32, No.11, pp. 1803-1809, 2024, DOI:10.32604/or.2024.052358 - 16 October 2024

Abstract Background: Lung cancer (LC) is one of the most common neoplastic diseases and a leading cause of death in Saudi Arabia. Its incidence in Saudi Arabia has increased by more than 3% within two decades. Our study aimed to describe the epidemiological and genetic landscapes of LC in Al-Madinah city in Saudi Arabia. Methods: A retrospective analysis was conducted on the medical records of 65 patients diagnosed with lung cancer between 2015 and 2021 at a single medical oncology center in Al-Madinah city of Saudi Arabia. Results: The mean patients’ age was 59.2 years, with 50… More >

Net Effect of Short-Term Smoking Cessation on Mental Health Changes: Inverse Probability of Treatment Weighting and Difference-in-Differences Method

    Ji-Su Park1, Tae-Hyeon Lee2, Il-Su Park3,*

    International Journal of Mental Health Promotion, Vol.26, No.9, pp. 745-755, 2024, DOI:10.32604/ijmhp.2024.054630 - 20 September 2024

Abstract Background: In response to the need for research clearly demonstrating the net effect of smoking cessation on mental health status, considering the causal relationship between smoking cessation and changes in mental health status, this study was undertaken. Thus, this study aimed to examine the net effect of short-term smoking cessation on five specific mental health metrics and the overall mental health status score. Methods: We used data from the first wave of the Korean Health Panel (KHP) Survey (2011–2013, 2016–2018) and focused on men aged 19 years and older, to explore the effects of smoking… More >

An Efficient ResNetSE Architecture for Smoking Activity Recognition from Smartwatch

    Narit Hnoohom1, Sakorn Mekruksavanich2, Anuchit Jitpattanakul3,4,*

    Intelligent Automation & Soft Computing, Vol.35, No.1, pp. 1245-1259, 2023, DOI:10.32604/iasc.2023.028290 - 06 June 2022

Abstract Smoking is a major cause of cancer, heart disease and other afflictions that lead to early mortality. An effective smoking classification mechanism that provides insights into individual smoking habits would assist in implementing addiction treatment initiatives. Smoking activities often accompany other activities such as drinking or eating. Consequently, smoking activity recognition can be a challenging topic in human activity recognition (HAR). A deep learning framework for smoking activity recognition (SAR) employing smartwatch sensors was proposed together with a deep residual network combined with squeeze-and-excitation modules (ResNetSE) to increase the effectiveness of the SAR framework. Optimal Control and Spectral Collocation Method for Solving Smoking Models

    Amr M. S. Mahdy1,*, Mohamed S. Mohamed1, Ahoud Y. Al Amiri2, Khaled A. Gepreel1

    Intelligent Automation & Soft Computing, Vol.31, No.2, pp. 899-915, 2022, DOI:10.32604/iasc.2022.017801 - 22 September 2021

Abstract In this manuscript, we solve the ordinary model of nonlinear smoking mathematically by using the second kind of shifted Chebyshev polynomials. The stability of the equilibrium point is calculated. The schematic of the model illustrates our proposition. We discuss the optimal control of this model, and formularize the optimal control smoking work through the necessary optimality cases. A numerical technique for the simulation of the control problem is adopted. Moreover, a numerical method is presented, and its stability analysis discussed. Numerical simulation then demonstrates our idea. Optimal control for the model is further discussed by More >

A Real Time Vision-Based Smoking Detection Framework on Edge

    Ruilong Chen1, Guangfu Zeng1, Ke Wang2, Lei Luo1,*, Zhiping Cai1

    Journal on Internet of Things, Vol.2, No.2, pp. 55-64, 2020, DOI:10.32604/jiot.2020.09814 - 14 September 2020

Abstract Smoking is the main reason for fire disaster and pollution in petrol station, construction site and warehouse. Existing solutions based on wearable devices and smoking sensors were costly and hard to obtain evidence of smoking in unmanned scenarios. With the developments of closed circuit television (CCTV) system, vision-based methods for object detection, mostly driven by deep learning techniques, were introduced recently. However, the massive GPU computing hardware required by the deep learning algorithm made these methods hard to be deployed. This paper aims at solving the smoking detection problem on edge and proposes the solution More >

A Structure Preserving Numerical Method for Solution of Stochastic Epidemic Model of Smoking Dynamics

    Ali Raza1, Muhammad Rafiq2, Nauman Ahmed3, Ilyas Khan4, *, Kottakkaran Sooppy Nisar5, Zafar Iqbal3

    CMC-Computers, Materials & Continua, Vol.65, No.1, pp. 263-278, 2020, DOI:10.32604/cmc.2020.011289 - 23 July 2020

Abstract In this manuscript, we consider a stochastic smoking epidemic model from behavioural sciences. Also, we develop a structure preserving numerical method to describe the dynamics of stochastic smoking epidemic model in a human population. The structural properties of a physical system include positivity, boundedness and dynamical consistency. These properties play a vital role in non-linear dynamics. The solution for nonlinear stochastic models necessitates the conservation of these properties. Unfortunately, the aforementioned properties of the model have not been restored in the existing stochastic methods. Therefore, it is essential to construct a structure preserving numerical method More >
