Association between Meeting 24-Hour Movement Guidelines and Psychological Features of Chinese Emerging Adults

    Yanjie Zhang1,2, Jin Kuang3, Xun Luo1,2, Mengxian Zhao4, Xiaolei Liu5,*

    International Journal of Mental Health Promotion, Vol.26, No.5, pp. 399-406, 2024, DOI:10.32604/ijmhp.2024.048925 - 30 May 2024

Abstract Background: Emerging adulthood is a pivotal life stage, presenting significant psychological and social changes, such as decreased sociability, depression, and other mental health problems. Previous studies have associated these changes with an unhealthy lifestyle. The 24-h movement guidelines for healthy lifestyles have been developed to promote appropriate health behaviors and improve individual wellness. However, the relationship between adherence to the 24-h movement guidelines and different characteristics of Chinese emerging adults is yet to be explored. This cross-sectional study aimed to investigate the association between adherence to the 24-h movement guidelines and four characteristics (self-exploration, instability, possibilities,… More >

The Impact of Sleep Determination on Procrastination before Bedtime: The Role of Anxiety

    Na Liu1, Junxiu Wang2,3, Wanli Zang4,*

    International Journal of Mental Health Promotion, Vol.26, No.5, pp. 377-387, 2024, DOI:10.32604/ijmhp.2024.047808 - 30 May 2024

Abstract Objective: The importance of good sleep for energy recovery and overall physical and mental health cannot be overstated. However, the increasing competitiveness of society, diversifying lifestyles, and the rapid spread of the internet and electronic devices have significantly impacted people’s sleep patterns, particularly through bedtime procrastination. Therefore, this study aims to investigate the relationship and underlying mechanisms between sleep determination, anxiety, and bedtime procrastination among the Chinese population. Method: The study utilized data from a national survey—the China Residents’ Sleep Condition Survey (November 2021, with 6,037 participants). By constructing mediation and moderation models, it analyzed the… More >

Sleep Posture Classification Using RGB and Thermal Cameras Based on Deep Learning Model

    Awais Khan1, Chomyong Kim2, Jung-Yeon Kim2, Ahsan Aziz1, Yunyoung Nam3,*

    CMES-Computer Modeling in Engineering & Sciences, Vol.140, No.2, pp. 1729-1755, 2024, DOI:10.32604/cmes.2024.049618 - 20 May 2024

Abstract Sleep posture surveillance is crucial for patient comfort, yet current systems face difficulties in providing comprehensive studies due to the obstruction caused by blankets. Precise posture assessment remains challenging because of the complex nature of the human body and variations in sleep patterns. Consequently, this study introduces an innovative method utilizing RGB and thermal cameras for comprehensive posture classification, thereby enhancing the analysis of body position and comfort. This method begins by capturing a dataset of sleep postures in the form of videos using RGB and thermal cameras, which depict six commonly adopted postures: supine,… More > Graphic Abstract

Stubborn Hypoxia in Neonates with D-Transposition of the Great Arteries after Arterial Switch Operation: Central Sleep Apnea as the Cause and Potential Indicator of Brain Immaturity

    Camden L. Hebson1,*, Kyle Bliton2, Amr Y. Hammouda1, Kaitlyn Barr3, W. Hampton Gray4, Mohini Gunnett2, Waldemar F. Carlo1

    Congenital Heart Disease, Vol.19, No.2, pp. 185-195, 2024, DOI:10.32604/chd.2024.048871 - 16 May 2024

Abstract D-transposition of the great arteries (d-TGA) is surgically repaired with the arterial switch operation (ASO) with excellent results, however short and long-term morbidities still develop including neurocognitive delay. Clinically significant central sleep apnea is uncommon in non-premature infants, but when present indicates immature autonomic control of respiration likely due to a neurologic disorder. We report the unanticipated finding of central sleep apnea in four-term neonates with d-TGA after uncomplicated ASO, with the short-term complication of delayed hospital discharge and long-term concerns regarding this early marker of brain immaturity and its hindrance to normal development. Relationship between Authoritative Parenting Style and Preschool Children’s Emotion Regulation: A Moderated Mediation Model

    Yan Jin, Wei Chen*

    International Journal of Mental Health Promotion, Vol.26, No.3, pp. 189-198, 2024, DOI:10.32604/ijmhp.2023.045331 - 08 April 2024

Abstract An authoritative parenting style has been shown to promote children’s emotion regulation in European-American family studies. However, little is known about how sleep problems and the child’s sibling status in Chinese families affect this relationship. Based on family system theory, this study attempts to better understand the relationship between authoritative parenting style and emotion regulation. Mothers of preschool children in Chinese kindergartens completed questionnaires about their children’s sleep habits, their authoritative parenting styles, and children’s emotion regulation. A total of 531 children participated in this study. Results showed that authoritative parenting was positively associated with… More >

Abstract Under the effects of COVID-19 and a number of ongoing lockdown tactics, anxiety symptoms and poor sleep quality have become common mental health issues among college freshmen and are intimately related to their emotional adaptation. To explore this connection, this study gathered data from a sample of 256 freshmen enrolled in an elite university in China in September 2022. The association between sleep quality, anxiety symptoms, and emotional adaptation was clarified using correlation analysis. Additionally, the mediating function of anxiety symptoms between sleep quality and emotional adaptation was investigated using a structural equation model. The… More >

The Effect of Sleep and Cognition Enhancement Multimodal Intervention for Mild Cognitive Impairment with Sleep Disturbance in the Community-Dwelling Elderly

Eun Kyoung Han, Hae Kyoung Son*

    International Journal of Mental Health Promotion, Vol.25, No.11, pp. 1197-1208, 2023, DOI:10.32604/ijmhp.2023.041560 - 08 December 2023

Abstract Dementia prevalence has soared due to population aging. In Mild Cognitive Impairment (MCI) as a pre-dementia stage, sleep disturbances have raised much interest as a factor in a bidirectional relationship with cognitive decline. Thus, this study developed the Sleep and Cognition Enhancement Multimodal Intervention (SCEMI) based on Lazarus’ multimodal approach and conducted a randomized controlled experiment to investigate the effects of the novel program on sleep and cognition in MCI elderly. The participants were 55 MCI elderly with sleep disturbances at two dementia care centers located in S-city, Gyeonggi-do, South Korea (n = 25 in… More >

Electroencephalography (EEG) Based Neonatal Sleep Staging and Detection Using Various Classification Algorithms

Hafza Ayesha Siddiqa1, Muhammad Irfan1, Saadullah Farooq Abbasi2,*, Wei Chen1

    CMC-Computers, Materials & Continua, Vol.77, No.2, pp. 1759-1778, 2023, DOI:10.32604/cmc.2023.041970 - 29 November 2023

Abstract Automatic sleep staging of neonates is essential for monitoring their brain development and maturity of the nervous system. EEG based neonatal sleep staging provides valuable information about an infant’s growth and health, but is challenging due to the unique characteristics of EEG and lack of standardized protocols. This study aims to develop and compare 18 machine learning models using Automated Machine Learning (autoML) technique for accurate and reliable multi-channel EEG-based neonatal sleep-wake classification. The study investigates autoML feasibility without extensive manual selection of features or hyperparameter tuning. The data is obtained from neonates at post-menstrual… More >
