Influence of Various Earth-Retaining Walls on the Dynamic Response Comparison Based on 3D Modeling

    Muhammad Akbar1,2, Huali Pan1,*, Jiangcheng Huang3, Bilal Ahmed4, Guoqiang Ou1

    CMES-Computer Modeling in Engineering & Sciences, Vol.139, No.3, pp. 2835-2863, 2024, DOI:10.32604/cmes.2024.046993 - 11 March 2024

Abstract The present work aims to assess earthquake-induced earth-retaining (ER) wall displacement. This study is on the dynamics analysis of various earth-retaining wall designs in hollow precast concrete panels, reinforcement concrete facing panels, and gravity-type earth-retaining walls. The finite element (FE) simulations utilized a 3D plane strain condition to model full-scale ER walls and numerous nonlinear dynamics analyses. The seismic performance of different models, which includes reinforcement concrete panels and gravity-type and hollow precast concrete ER walls, was simulated and examined using the FE approach. It also displays comparative studies such as stress distribution, deflection of… More >

Seismic Analysis of Reinforced Concrete Silos under Far-Field and Near-Fault Earthquakes

Anwer H. Hussein*, Hussam K. Risan

    Structural Durability & Health Monitoring, Vol.16, No.3, pp. 213-233, 2022, DOI:10.32604/sdhm.2022.018293 - 18 July 2022

Abstract Silos are strategical structures used to stockpile various types of granular materials. They are highly vulnerable to earthquake excitation and have been frequently reported to fail at a higher rate than any other industrial structure. The seismic response of silos within the near-fault region will suffer a complex combination of loadings due to the unique characteristics of the near-fault ground motions; which are usually associated with a large amplitude pulse at the beginning of either the velocity or the displacement time histories. This study aims to numerically evaluate the seismic response of reinforced concrete cylindrical… More >

An Adaptive Substructure-Based Model Order Reduction Method for Nonlinear Seismic Analysis in OpenSees

    Jian Wang1, 2, Ming Fang3, *, Hui Li1, 2

    CMES-Computer Modeling in Engineering & Sciences, Vol.124, No.1, pp. 79-106, 2020, DOI:10.32604/cmes.2020.09470 - 19 June 2020

Abstract Structural components may enter an initial-elastic state, a plastic-hardening state and a residual-elastic state during strong seismic excitations. In the residual-elastic state, structural components keep in an unloading/reloading stage that is dominated by a tangent stiffness, thus structural components remain residual deformations but behave in an elastic manner. It has a great potential to make model order reduction for such structural components using the tangent-stiffness-based vibration modes as a reduced order basis. In this paper, an adaptive substructure-based model order reduction method is developed to perform nonlinear seismic analysis for structures that have a priori… More >

Seismic Analysis of the Connections of Buried Segmented Pipes

    Wei Liu1, 2, *, Zhaoyang Song2, Yunchang Wang2

    CMES-Computer Modeling in Engineering & Sciences, Vol.123, No.1, pp. 257-282, 2020, DOI:10.32604/cmes.2020.07220 - 01 April 2020

Abstract Seismic analysis of buried pipes has been one study focus during the last decades, but the systematic seismic research of pipe connections, especially its relationship with the connected straight pipe, is nearly blank. On the basis, the influence of pipe connections on the joint deformations (JDs) of buried segmented pipes is analyzed in detail by considering different parameters, namely, connection shapes, ground conditions, pipe diameters, branch angles, seismic incident angles, and input ground motions. Moreover, an influence coefficient, which measures the influence of pipe connections on pipe JDs, is calculated. Results show that pipe connections More >

A Reduction Algorithm of Contact Problems for Core Seismic Analysis of Fast Breeder Reactors

    Ryuta Imai1, Masatoshi Nakagawa2

    CMES-Computer Modeling in Engineering & Sciences, Vol.84, No.3, pp. 253-282, 2012, DOI:10.3970/cmes.2012.084.253

Abstract In order to evaluate seismic response of fast breeder reactors, finite element analysis for core vibration with contact/impact is performed so far. However a full model analysis of whole core vibration requires huge calculation times and memory sizes. In this research, we propose an acceleration method of reducing the number of degrees of freedom to be solved until converged for nonlinear contact problems. Furthermore we show a sufficient condition for the algorithm to work well and discuss its efficiency and a generalization of the algorithm. In particular we carry out the full model analysis to More >

Cracking and Creep Role in Displacements at Constant Load: Concrete Solids in Compression

    E. Ferretti1, A. Di Leo1

    CMC-Computers, Materials & Continua, Vol.7, No.2, pp. 59-80, 2008, DOI:10.3970/cmc.2008.007.059

Abstract The main assumption on the basis of the identifying model of the effective law, developed by the Author, is the impossibility of considering the specimen as a continuum, when an identifying procedure from load-displacement to stress-strain in uniaxial compression is attempted. Actually, a failure mechanism with propagation of a macro-crack was found to activate from the very beginning of the uniaxial compression test forth. This leads to considering the acquired displacements as composed by two quotes: one constitutive, due to the material strain, and one of crack opening. Since the ratio between these two quotes… More >
