Abstract Epithelial growth factor receptor (EGFR) mutations are present in 10%–26% of non-small cell lung cancer (NSCLC) tumors and are associated with the response to tyrosine kinase inhibitors (TKIs). This study aimed to detect and quantify the presence of circulating tumor cells (CTCs) in EGFR-mutant NSCLC patients and investigate their possible role in providing prognostic information. Enrolled patients received erlotinib (150 mg) or gefitinib (250 mg) orally once daily as the first-line treatment. Serial blood samples were taken at baseline (CTC-d0) and on day 28 (CTC-d28) following the initiation of erlotinib/gefitinib for detection of CTCs using… More >

Abstract In this study, expression of FasL and Ki-67 messenger RNA (FasL and Ki-67 mRNA) in human retinoblastoma (HRB) was examined by the immunohistochemistry method and quantitative real-time PCR. Positive expression of Ki-67 in tumor cells was detected in 16 of 30 patients (53.33%), and only 9 (30%) of the tissues from patients with retinoblastoma showed positive staining for FasL. Our results revealed that FasL expression was significantly higher in tumor tissue with invasion compared with the noninvasion form (p = 0.033). Ki-67 expression was markedly increased in tumor tissues with invasion compared with the noninvasion group… More >

MicroRNAs in thyroid cancer with focus on medullary thyroid carcinoma: potential therapeutic targets and diagnostic/prognostic markers and web based tools

    ELHAM SHAKIBA1, SETI BOROOMAND2, SIMA KHERADMAND KIA3, MEHDI HEDAYATI4,*

    Oncology Research, Vol.32, No.6, pp. 1011-1019, 2024, DOI:10.32604/or.2024.049235

Abstract This review aimed to describe the inculpation of microRNAs (miRNAs) in thyroid cancer (TC) and its subtypes, mainly medullary thyroid carcinoma (MTC), and to outline web-based tools and databases for bioinformatics analysis of miRNAs in TC. Additionally, the capacity of miRNAs to serve as therapeutic targets and biomarkers in TC management will be discussed. This review is based on a literature search of relevant articles on the role of miRNAs in TC and its subtypes, mainly MTC. Additionally, web-based tools and databases for bioinformatics analysis of miRNAs in TC were identified and described. MiRNAs can… More > Graphic Abstract

    Oncology Research, Vol.32, No.4, pp. 659-678, 2024, DOI:10.32604/or.2023.046712

Abstract Background: IQGAP3 plays a crucial role in regulating cell proliferation, division, and cytoskeletal organization. Abnormal expression of IQGAP3 has been linked to various tumors, but its function in glioma is not well understood. Methods: Various methods, including genetic differential analysis, single-cell analysis, ROC curve analysis, Cox regression, Kaplan-Meier analysis, and enrichment analysis, were employed to analyze the expression patterns, diagnostic potential, prognostic implications, and biological processes involving IQGAP3 in normal and tumor tissues. The impact of IQGAP3 on immune infiltration and the immune microenvironment in gliomas was evaluated using immunofluorescence. Additionally, the cBioPortal database was used… More > Graphic Abstract

    Oncology Research, Vol.31, No.2, pp. 83-99, 2023, DOI:10.32604/or.2023.028905

Abstract Pancreatic cancer is a malignant disease characterized by low survival and high recurrence rate, whose patients are mostly at the stage of locally advanced or metastatic disease when first diagnosed. Early diagnosis is particularly important because prognostic/predictive markers help guide optimal individualized treatment regimens. So far, CA19-9 is the only biomarker for pancreatic cancer approved by the FDA, but its effectiveness is limited by low sensitivity and specificity. With recent advances in genomics, proteomics, metabolomics, and other analytical and sequencing technologies, the rapid acquisition and screening of biomarkers is now possible. Oncologie, Vol.23, No.1, pp. 131-140, 2021, DOI:10.32604/Oncologie.2021.014153

Abstract Aim: This study aims to explore the role of serum long non-coding RNA (lncRNA) colon cancer-associated transcript 2 (CCAT2) as a diagnostic marker for gastric cancer (GC). Methods: We recruited 76 patients with GC admitted to our hospital (the observation group, OG) and 83 healthy volunteers undergoing physical examinations during the same period (the control group, CG). CCAT2 expression was tested and its correlation with clinicopathological characteristics of GC was analyzed. We also explored the value of CCAT2 in assessing the treatment efficacy, predicting the fatality, and evaluating the prognosis of patients. Results: We detected higher… More >
