Modelling and Simulation of Fluid Flow Evolution in Porous Sea Ice Based on TMPD

    Ying Song1

The International Conference on Computational & Experimental Engineering and Sciences, Vol.30, No.3, pp. 1-1, 2024, DOI:10.32604/icces.2024.011329

Abstract Granular and columnar sea ice formed random pores containing gas and brine while growing in a polar environment. Building an appropriate microstructure of sea ice model to reveal its material singularities using standard methods is difficult. In this study, we develop a porous sea ice model based on coupled thermos-mechanical peridynamics [1-3] by considering the fluid flow and material transport in pores. The novel features of using the porous sea ice peridynamic model are as follows: (1) To establish the porous sea ice model, the sea ice pore equation is combined with the peridynamic equations. Kaituo Jiao1, Dongxu Han2,*, Bo Yu2

The International Conference on Computational & Experimental Engineering and Sciences, Vol.30, No.1, pp. 1-3, 2024, DOI:10.32604/icces.2024.011520

Abstract Motivated by the fractures being very thin compared to the size of rock matrix, utilizing the non-conforming grid is an efficient approach to simulate fluid flow in fractured porous media. The embedded discrete fracture model (EDFM) is the typical one that using the conforming grid and modelled based on the finite volume method (FVM) framework. The EDFM maintains advantages of mass conservation and low computational complexity, but it cannot characterize blocking fractures and has a low accuracy on the mass exchange between fractures and matrix [1]. In our previous work [2], we developed the enriched-EDFM… More >

Abstract The research examines fluid behavior in a porous box-shaped enclosure. The fluid contains nanoscale particles and swimming microbes and is subject to magnetic forces at an angle. Natural circulation driven by biological factors is investigated. The analysis combines a traditional numerical approach with machine learning techniques. Mathematical equations describing the system are transformed into a dimensionless form and then solved using computational methods. The artificial neural network (ANN) model, trained with the Levenberg-Marquardt method, accurately predicts values, showing high correlation (R = 1), low mean squared error (MSE), and minimal error clustering. Parametric analysis reveals significant… More >

A SPH Formulation for Coupled Thermal-Hydraulic-Mechanical Processes of Saturated Porous Media

    Wenhao Shen1,2,*, Moubin Liu2

The International Conference on Computational & Experimental Engineering and Sciences, Vol.29, No.2, pp. 1-1, 2024, DOI:10.32604/icces.2024.011418

Abstract In this talk, we will present a SPH formulation for coupled Thermal-Hydraulic-Mechanical processes. The Biot’s theory is used to model the fluid-solid interaction of saturated porous media, the Fourier’s law and the Newton’s law of cooling are used to describe the thermal conduction in a single medium and the heat exchange between the fluid and the solid, respectively. The physical model is expressed in the initial reference, and the total Lagrangian SPH is used to build the discrete formulation. We will discuss the numerical instability induced by twice repeated derivatives of discontinuous physical quantities, and More >

    FDMP-Fluid Dynamics & Materials Processing, Vol.20, No.9, pp. 1957-1970, 2024, DOI:10.32604/fdmp.2024.050167 - 23 August 2024

Abstract In this paper, we study the onset and development of three-dimensional convection in a tilted porous layer saturated with a liquid. The layer is subjected to a gravitational field and a strictly vertical temperature gradient. Typically, problems of thermal convection in tilted porous media saturated with a liquid are studied by assuming constant different temperatures at the boundaries of the layer, which prevent these systems from supporting conductive (non-convective) states. The boundary conditions considered in the present work allow a conductive state and are representative of typical geological applications. In an earlier work, we carried… More > Graphic Abstract

Exploring Capillary Fringe Flow: Quasilinear Modeling with Kirchhoff Transforms and Gardner Model

    Rachid Karra1,*, Abdelatif Maslouhi2

    FDMP-Fluid Dynamics & Materials Processing, Vol.20, No.7, pp. 1611-1631, 2024, DOI:10.32604/fdmp.2024.048447 - 23 July 2024

Abstract Recent studies have underscored the significance of the capillary fringe in hydrological and biochemical processes. Moreover, its role in shallow waters is expected to be considerable. Traditionally, the study of groundwater flow has centered on unsaturated-saturated zones, often overlooking the impact of the capillary fringe. In this study, we introduce a steady-state two-dimensional model that integrates the capillary fringe into a 2-D numerical solution. Our novel approach employs the potential form of the Richards equation, facilitating the determination of boundaries, pressures, and velocities across different ground surface zones. We utilized a two-dimensional Freefem++ finite element model… More >

Abstract In this work, we numerically study the hydrodynamic permeability of new-generation artificial porous materials used as scaffolds for cell growth in a perfusion bioreactor. We consider two popular solid matrix designs based on triply periodic minimal surfaces, the Schwarz P (primitive) and D (diamond) surfaces, which enable the creation of materials with controlled porosity gradients. The latter property is crucial for regulating the shear stress field in the pores of the scaffold, which makes it possible to control the intensity of cell growth. The permeability of functionally graded materials is studied within the framework of… More > Graphic Abstract

Abstract This study intends to evaluate the influence of temperature stratification on an unsteady fluid flow past an accelerated vertical plate in the existence of viscous dissipation. It is assumed that the medium under study is a grey, non-scattered fluid that both fascinates and transmits radiation. The leading equations are discretized using the finite difference method (FDM). Using MATLAB software, the impacts of flow factors on flow fields are revealed with particular examples in graphs and a table. In this regard, FDM results show that the velocity and temperature gradients increase with an increase of Eckert More >

Abstract Recent advances in deep neural networks have shed new light on physics, engineering, and scientific computing. Reconciling the data-centered viewpoint with physical simulation is one of the research hotspots. The physics-informed neural network (PINN) is currently the most general framework, which is more popular due to the convenience of constructing NNs and excellent generalization ability. The automatic differentiation (AD)-based PINN model is suitable for the homogeneous scientific problem; however, it is unclear how AD can enforce flux continuity across boundaries between cells of different properties where spatial heterogeneity is represented by grid cells with different… More >

Modeling of Reactive Flow and Precipitation in Unconventional Reservoirs

    Fengchang Yang1,*

The International Conference on Computational & Experimental Engineering and Sciences, Vol.27, No.3, pp. 1-1, 2023, DOI:10.32604/icces.2023.09747

Abstract Mineral nucleation and precipitation commonly occur in nature and plays an important role in many energyrelated applications with reactive flow. For instance, minerals nucleate and precipitate as scale in the pore structure in unconventional reservoirs and significantly reduce the permeability of the porous media. This phenomenon could lead to a rapid decrease in production and cause significant financial loss. The need to predict the dynamic properties of such systems has resulted in questions about the fundamental mechanisms of reactive flow as well as mineral nucleation and precipitation in pores. Additionally, there is still a discrepancy… More >
