    Abstract

The rapidly growing world population, water shortage, and food security are promising problems for sustainable agriculture. Farmers adopt higher irrigation and fertilizer applications to increase crop production resulting in environmental pollution. This study aimed to identify the long-term effects of intelligent water and fertilizers used in corn yield and soil nutrient status. A series of field experiments were conducted for six years with treatments as: farmer accustomed to fertilization used as control (CON), fertilizer decrement (KF), fertilizer decrement + water-saving irrigation (BMP1); combined application of organic and inorganic fertilizer + water-saving irrigation (BMP2), and combined application

    Abstract

The increasing world population has forced excessive chemical fertilizer and irrigation to complete the global food demand, deteriorating the water quality and nutrient losses. Short-term studies do not compile the evidences; therefore, the study aimed to identify the effectiveness of reduced doses of inorganic fertilizer and water-saving practices, hence, a six-year experiment (2015–2020) was conducted in China to address the knowledge gap. The experimental treatments were: farmer accustomed fertilization used as control (525:180:30 kg NPK ha−1), fertilizer decrement (450:150:15 kg NPK ha−1), fertilizer decrement + water-saving irrigation (450:150:15 kg NPK ha−1), application of organic and inorganic fertilizer

Effects of Different Chinese Hickory Husk Returning Modes on Soil Nutrition and Microbial Community in Acid Forest Soil

    Qian Liu1, Sayikal Duyxanale1, Yongqian Tang2, Xinyu Shen1, Yuanlai Zhao1, Xinru Ma1, Shuai Shao1, Chenfei Liang1,*

    Phyton-International Journal of Experimental Botany, Vol.92, No.3, pp. 943-954, 2023, DOI:10.32604/phyton.2022.023225 - 29 November 2022

Abstract Chinese hickory (Carya cathayensis Sarg.) is an important economic forest in Southeastern China. A large amount of hickory husk waste is generated every year but with a low proportion of returning. Meanwhile, intensive management has resulted in soil degradation of Chinese hickory plantations. This study aims to investigate the effects of three Chinese hickory husk returning modes on soil amendment, including soil acidity, soil nutrition, and microbial community. The field experiment carried out four treatments: control (CK), hickory husk mulching (HM), hickory husk biochar (BC), and hickory husk organic fertilizer (OF). The phospholipid fatty acid (PLFA)… More >

Effects of Rate and Source Organo-Mineral Material on Forage Yield and Nutritive Value of Barley-Pea Mixed under Arid Conditions

    Walid Soufan*, Nasser A. Al-Suhaibani

    Phyton-International Journal of Experimental Botany, Vol.91, No.7, pp. 1483-1493, 2022, DOI:10.32604/phyton.2022.020264 - 14 March 2022

Abstract Cereal-legume intercropping plays a vital role in the subsistence food production system that prevails in the arid regions. It not only provides profitable crop productivity for agricultural communities but also plays an important role in improving soil fertility. Therefore, the present research was conducted to assess the effect of the organic and mineral fertilizers on the forage yield and nutritional value in barley-pea intercropping system. The results revealed that the quality of forage grass is significantly influenced by both organic and inorganic fertilizer. Thus, organic fertilizer application has significantly influenced the dry matter (DM), crude… More >

Abstract This pot-based study investigated the influence of poultry manure and 1:1 mixture of poultry manure + biochar (produced from farmyard manure [FYM] or wood), on the biomass production and concentration of heavy metals in leaves of lettuce and spinach. The concentration of mineral nitrogen (N) and soluble inorganic phosphorus (P) of soils cultivated with these vegetables was also investigated. The application of poultry manure or FYM biochar in soil as 10% (equivalent to 60 t ha–1 , an estimated 1726.8 kg ha–1 N in poultry manure and 1353.9 kg ha–1 N in FYM) and 15% amendment (equivalent… More >

    Phyton-International Journal of Experimental Botany, Vol.86, pp. 40-45, 2017, DOI:10.32604/phyton.2017.86.040

Abstract The introduction of ornamental crops to the Comarca Lagunera is a great market opportunity for producers of flowers, just as it is the case of Caladium bicolor which is exported to Europe, USA, Caribbean islands and Africa. The use of organic products derived from cattle manure for fertilization, improves physical soil conditions and provides significant amount of nutrients to plants and reduce production costs. Therefore, the objective of this study was to quantify the growth of tubercle and root of the ornamental plant Caladium bicolor by applying organic fertilizer (OF) extracted from cattle manure.
