    Energy Engineering, Vol.121, No.4, pp. 1007-1026, 2024, DOI:10.32604/ee.2023.045270 - 26 March 2024

Abstract A hard problem that hinders the movement of waxy crude oil is wax deposition in oil pipelines. To ensure the safe operation of crude oil pipelines, an accurate model must be developed to predict the rate of wax deposition in crude oil pipelines. Aiming at the shortcomings of the ENN prediction model, which easily falls into the local minimum value and weak generalization ability in the implementation process, an optimized ENN prediction model based on the IRSA is proposed. The validity of the new model was confirmed by the accurate prediction of two sets of… More > Graphic Abstract

    FDMP-Fluid Dynamics & Materials Processing, Vol.19, No.8, pp. 2067-2081, 2023, DOI:10.32604/fdmp.2023.027156 - 04 April 2023

Abstract Graphene flakes (GF) have been prepared and assessed as a material for improving flow in oil pipelines under the effect of an electric field. In particular, different amounts of GFs have been considered in order to determine the optimal flow conditions. The GFs were prepared from graphite foam, derived from the dehydration of sugar with a particle size of 500–600 μm, which was dispersed in ethanol and exfoliated in a ball mill under a shear force. After 15 h of exfoliation, sonication, and subsequent high-speed centrifugation at 3000 rpm, irregular-shaped GFs of 50–140 nm were produced and characterized… More > Graphic Abstract

Abstract Accurate prediction of the internal corrosion rates of oil and gas pipelines could be an effective way to prevent pipeline leaks. In this study, a proposed framework for predicting corrosion rates under a small sample of metal corrosion data in the laboratory was developed to provide a new perspective on how to solve the problem of pipeline corrosion under the condition of insufficient real samples. This approach employed the bagging algorithm to construct a strong learner by integrating several KNN learners. A total of 99 data were collected and split into training and test set More >

    Energy Engineering, Vol.119, No.5, pp. 2049-2064, 2022, DOI:10.32604/ee.2022.019526 - 21 July 2022

Abstract In this paper, the transportation economy of two heated crude oil pipelines laid in one ditch is analyzed by taking into account the influence of operating temperature, interval between two pipelines, and distance between two heating stations on the heating energy consumption. To analyze the transportation economy, the two heated crude oil pipelines laid in one ditch are simulated under four operating conditions based on an unstructured finite volume method. Compared with laying two crude oil pipelines separately in two ditches, the results attest notably higher soil temperature, meaning reduced heat dissipation of each pipeline… More >

    Xiaohua Chen1,*, Caifu Lan1, Honghao Zheng2, Wang Li1, Chao Zhao1, Wenjun Dang3

    Energy Engineering, Vol.119, No.4, pp. 1439-1452, 2022, DOI:10.32604/ee.2022.018208 - 23 May 2022

Abstract For oil pipeline in mountain areas, high hydrostatic pressure in the pipeline may cause error-opening of pressure relief valves, and oil is discharged from the pipeline to the pressure relief tanks, bringing spilling-over risk of the pressure relief tanks. Therefore, simulating the error-opening situations of the pressure relief valves and investigating the oil discharge process are necessary for checking the possibility of the spilling-over accident and then proposing measures to improve the pressure relief system. This research focuses on a continuous undulating oil pipeline with large elevation difference and a station along this pipeline, which… More >
