MiR-219a-5p exerts a protective function in a mouse model of myocardial infarction

ZULONG SHENG*, YANRU HE, JUNYAN CAI, YUQIN JI, YUYU YAO, GENSHAN MA

    BIOCELL, Vol.48, No.9, pp. 1369-1377, 2024, DOI:10.32604/biocell.2024.049905 - 04 September 2024

Abstract Background: Myocardial infarction (MI) is known worldwide for its important disabling features, including myocarditis and cardiomyocyte apoptosis. It is believed that microRNA (miRNA) has a role in the cellular processes of apoptosis and myocarditis, and miR-219a-5p has been found to suppress the inflammatory response. However, unknown is the precise mechanism by which miR-219a-5p contributes to MI. Methods: We measured the expression of miR-219a-5p and evaluated its effects on target proteins, inflammatory factors, and apoptosis in a mouse model of MI. Echocardiography was utilized to examine the MI clinical index, and triphenyl tetrazolium chloride staining was More >

Reversal of maternal obesity attenuates hypoxia and improves placental development in the preeclamptic-like BPH/5 mouse model

    BIOCELL, Vol.47, No.9, pp. 2051-2058, 2023, DOI:10.32604/biocell.2023.029644 - 28 September 2023

Abstract Background: Women with obesity have higher risk of adverse pregnancy outcomes, including preeclampsia (PE). Late-gestational hypertension, aberrant fetoplacental development, and fetal growth restriction (FGR), hallmarks of PE, are observed spontaneously in BPH/5 mice. Similar to obese preeclamptic women, BPH/5 mice have higher visceral white adipose tissue (WAT) and circulating leptin. We hypothesized that attenuation of maternal obesity and serum leptin in pregnant BPH/5 mice will improve fetoplacental development by decreasing hypoxia markers and leptin expression at the maternal-fetal interface. Methods: To test this hypothesis, BPH/5 mice were fed ad libitum (lib) and pair-fed (PF) to C57… More >

Salubrinal alleviates traumatic spinal cord injury through suppression of the eIF2α/ATF4 pathway in mouse model

    XINFU FAN1,2,#, JIE CHEN3,#, ZONGMENG ZHANG4,#, FANGHUI CHEN5, HAOSEN WANG6, YAFEI CAI6, JUN LI7,*

    BIOCELL, Vol.46, No.6, pp. 1527-1535, 2022, DOI:10.32604/biocell.2022.018269 - 07 February 2022

Abstract Spinal cord injury (SCI) remains an intractable clinical challenge of neurosurgery, it can be divided into two stages: uncontrollable primary injury induced by mechanical damage and controllable secondary injury regulated by continuous cell death. The apoptosis was the one of most important events in secondary injury, previous studies revealed that excessive endoplasmic reticulum (ER) stress breaks down the homeostasis and triggers apoptosis in the spinal cord. To deter or alleviate the secondary jury, we screen one of fat-soluble compounds, salubrinal, which was an inhibitor of eIF2α dephosphorylation can repair SCI by inhibiting ER stress in… More >

Abstract Glioblastoma is a lethal disease featuring a high proliferation of tumor cells, excessive angiogenesis, and heavy drug resistance. The overall survival of glioblastoma patients has been dismal, even with an intensive standard of care. Recent advances in immune checkpoint blockades are changing the treatment of cancers. However, the efficacy of immune checkpoint blockades in glioblastoma is still unclear. Here we investigated the roles of CD103+ cells in regulating the effect of immune checkpoint blockades in glioblastoma mouse models. Our findings indicated that the murine glioblastoma model was not sensitive to immune checkpoint blockades. Flt3L, a growth More >

Adjuvant effects of Lactobacillus casei added to a renutrition diet in a malnourished mouse model

    PAOLA GAUFFIN CANO1 , GRACIELA AGÜERO3, GABRIELA PERDIGON1,2

    BIOCELL, Vol.26, No.1, pp. 35-48, 2002, DOI:10.32604/biocell.2002.26.035

Abstract Nutritional deficiencies are associated with impaired immune response, affecting the body’s defence mechanisms. It is also known that Lactic Acid Bacteria (LAB) and fermented products such us yogurt have immunopotentiator activity and nutritional properties, and could thus be used as a valuable supplement in a renutrition diet. The aim of this study was to determine, in a non-severe malnutrition model, the effective dose of Lactobacillus casei (L.casei), which when is used as an adjuvant in a renutrition diet, would modulate the mucosal immune system and induce recovery of the integrity of the intestinal barrier. The experiments… More >
