Abstract Melatonin is a versatile indolamine synthesized and secreted by the pineal gland in response to the photoperiodic information received by the retinohypothalamic signaling pathway. Melatonin has many benefits, such as organizing circadian rhythms and acting as a powerful hormone. We aimed to show the antitumor effects of melatonin in both in vivo and in vitro models through the mammalian target of rapamycin (mTOR) signaling pathway and the Argyrophilic Nucleolar Regulatory Region (AgNOR), using the Microcomputed Tomography (Micro CT). Ehrlich ascites carcinoma (EAC) cells were administered into the mice by subcutaneous injection. Animals with solid tumors were injected intraperitoneally with 50… More > Graphic Abstract

Micro-CT Based Meso-Scale Modeling and Peridynamics Analysis for Short-Fiber Composites

    Zhiyang Yao1, Shuling Wang1, Yin Yu1, Yile Hu1,*

The International Conference on Computational & Experimental Engineering and Sciences, Vol.26, No.2, pp. 1-1, 2023, DOI:10.32604/icces.2023.09298

Abstract This study presents a method for modeling and analyzing the microstructure of short-fiber composites by using state-based PeriDynamic (PD). The micro-structure of short-fiber composites is obtained from MicroCT scanning which provides non-uniformly discretized meshes of short-fiber’s surface profile. In order to obtain the uniformly discretized PD model, a new layering algorithm is proposed to reconstruct the shortfiber microstructure. Furthermore, considering the anisotropy of short-fiber, a clustering algorithm based on machine learning is introduced to identify fibers and calculate their orientations. The PD interaction domain of a material point on the boundary is incomplete, it can be complemented by searching material… More >

INTEGRATED MICRO X-RAY TOMOGRAPHY AND PORE-SCALE SIMULATIONS FOR ACCURATE PERMEABILITY PREDICTIONS OF POROUS MEDIA

Fangzhou Wanga,* , Gennifer A. Rileyb, Munonyedi Egboc, Melanie M. Derbyb, Gisuk Hwangc, Xianglin Lia,†

Frontiers in Heat and Mass Transfer, Vol.15, pp. 1-8, 2020, DOI:10.5098/hmt.15.1

Abstract This study conducts pore-scale simulations and experiments to estimate the permeability of two different types of porous materials: metal foams and sintered copper particles with porosities of approximately 0.9 and 0.4, respectively. The integration of micro X-ray computed tomography with pore-scale computational fluid dynamics simulations develops a unique tool to capture the pore-scale geometry of porous media and accurately predict non-isotropic permeability of porous media. The pore-scale simulation not only results in improved prediction accuracy but also has the capability to capture non-isotropic properties of heterogeneous materials, which is a huge challenge for empirical correlations, volume averaged simulations, and simulations… More >

A C-GAN Denoising Algorithm in Projection Domain for Micro-CT

    Lujie Chen1, Liang Zheng1, Maosen Lian1, Shouhua Luo1,*

    Molecular & Cellular Biomechanics, Vol.17, No.2, pp. 85-92, 2020, DOI: 10.32604/mcb.2019.07386

Abstract Micro-CT provides a high-resolution 3D imaging of micro-architecture in a non-invasive way, which becomes a significant tool in biomedical research and preclinical applications. Due to the limited power of micro-focus X-ray tube, photon starving occurs and noise is inevitable for the projection images, resulting in the degradation of spatial resolution, contrast and image details. In this paper, we propose a C-GAN (Conditional Generative Adversarial Nets) denoising algorithm in projection domain for Micro-CT imaging. The noise statistic property is utilized directly and a novel variance loss is developed to suppress the blurry effects during denoising procedure. Conditional Generative Adversarial Networks (C-GAN)… More >

Micro-CT Based Analysis of a New Paradigm for Vulnerable Plaque Rupture: Cellular Microcalcifications in Fibrous Caps

Yuliya Vengrenyuk*, Luis Cardoso*, Sheldon Weinbaum∗,†

    Molecular & Cellular Biomechanics, Vol.5, No.1, pp. 37-48, 2008, DOI:10.3970/mcb.2008.005.037

Abstract In this paper, we further investigate the new paradigm for the rupture of thin cap fibroatheroma (TCFA) proposed in Vengrenyuk et al. (2006 PNAS 103:14678) using a multilevel micro-CT based 3D numerical modeling. The new paradigm proposes that the rupture of TCFA is due to stress-induced interfacial debonding of cellular - level, 10 -- 20 μm microcalcifications in the fibrous cap proper. Such microcalcifications, which lie below the visibility of current in vivo imaging techniques, were detected for the first time using confocal microscopy and high resolution microcomputed tomography (micro-CT) imaging in Vengrenyuk et al. (2006) In the present study,… More >
