Abstract Neuroimaging has emerged over the last few decades as a crucial tool in diagnosing Alzheimer’s disease (AD). Mild cognitive impairment (MCI) is a condition that falls between the spectrum of normal cognitive function and AD. However, previous studies have mainly used handcrafted features to classify MCI, AD, and normal control (NC) individuals. This paper focuses on using gray matter (GM) scans obtained through magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) for the diagnosis of individuals with MCI, AD, and NC. To improve classification performance, we developed two transfer learning strategies with data augmentation (i.e., shear range, rotation, zoom… More >

Abstract Brain tumors pose a significant threat to human lives and have gained increasing attention as the tenth leading cause of global mortality. This study addresses the pressing issue of brain tumor classification using Magnetic resonance imaging (MRI). It focuses on distinguishing between Low-Grade Gliomas (LGG) and High-Grade Gliomas (HGG). LGGs are benign and typically manageable with surgical resection, while HGGs are malignant and more aggressive. The research introduces an innovative custom convolutional neural network (CNN) model, Glioma-CNN. GliomaCNN stands out as a lightweight CNN model compared to its predecessors. The research utilized the BraTS 2020 More >

Nonlinear Registration of Brain Magnetic Resonance Images with Cross Constraints of Intensity and Structure

    Han Zhou1,2, Hongtao Xu1,2, Xinyue Chang1,2, Wei Zhang1,2, Heng Dong1,2,*

    CMC-Computers, Materials & Continua, Vol.79, No.2, pp. 2295-2313, 2024, DOI:10.32604/cmc.2024.047754 - 15 May 2024

Abstract Many deep learning-based registration methods rely on a single-stream encoder-decoder network for computing deformation fields between 3D volumes. However, these methods often lack constraint information and overlook semantic consistency, limiting their performance. To address these issues, we present a novel approach for medical image registration called the Dual-VoxelMorph, featuring a dual-channel cross-constraint network. This innovative network utilizes both intensity and segmentation images, which share identical semantic information and feature representations. Two encoder-decoder structures calculate deformation fields for intensity and segmentation images, as generated by the dual-channel cross-constraint network. This design facilitates bidirectional communication between grayscale More >

Detection Algorithm of Knee Osteoarthritis Based on Magnetic Resonance Images

Xin Wang*, Shuang Liu, Chang-Cai Zhou

    Intelligent Automation & Soft Computing, Vol.37, No.1, pp. 221-234, 2023, DOI:10.32604/iasc.2023.036766 - 29 April 2023

Abstract Knee osteoarthritis (OA) is a common disease that impairs knee function and causes pain. Currently, studies on the detection of knee OA mainly focus on X-ray images, but X-ray images are insensitive to the changes in knee OA in the early stage. Since magnetic resonance (MR) imaging can observe the early features of knee OA, the knee OA detection algorithm based on MR image is innovatively proposed to judge whether knee OA is suffered. Firstly, the knee MR images are preprocessed before training, including a region of interest clipping, slice selection, and data augmentation. Then… More >

Liver Tumor Decision Support System on Human Magnetic Resonance Images: A Comparative Study

    Hiam Alquran1,2, Yazan Al-Issa3, Mohammed Alslatie4, Isam Abu-Qasmieh1, Amin Alqudah3, Wan Azani Mustafa5,7,*, Yasmin Mohd Yacob6,7

    Computer Systems Science and Engineering, Vol.46, No.2, pp. 1653-1671, 2023, DOI:10.32604/csse.2023.033861 - 09 February 2023

Abstract Liver cancer is the second leading cause of cancer death worldwide. Early tumor detection may help identify suitable treatment and increase the survival rate. Medical imaging is a non-invasive tool that can help uncover abnormalities in human organs. Magnetic Resonance Imaging (MRI), in particular, uses magnetic fields and radio waves to differentiate internal human organs tissue. However, the interpretation of medical images requires the subjective expertise of a radiologist and oncologist. Thus, building an automated diagnosis computer-based system can help specialists reduce incorrect diagnoses. This paper proposes a hybrid automated system to compare the performance… More >

Brain Tumor Segmentation in Multimodal MRI Using U-Net Layered Structure

Muhammad Javaid Iqbal1, Muhammad Waseem Iqbal2, Muhammad Anwar3,*, Muhammad Murad Khan4, Abd Jabar Nazimi5, Mohammad Nazir Ahmad6

    CMC-Computers, Materials & Continua, Vol.74, No.3, pp. 5267-5281, 2023, DOI:10.32604/cmc.2023.033024 - 28 December 2022

Abstract The brain tumour is the mass where some tissues become old or damaged, but they do not die or not leave their space. Mainly brain tumour masses occur due to malignant masses. These tissues must die so that new tissues are allowed to be born and take their place. Tumour segmentation is a complex and time-taking problem due to the tumour’s size, shape, and appearance variation. Manually finding such masses in the brain by analyzing Magnetic Resonance Images (MRI) is a crucial task for experts and radiologists. Radiologists could not work for large volume images… More >

Abstract The brain tumor is an abnormal and hysterical growth of brain tissues, and the leading cause of death affected patients worldwide. Even in this technology-based arena, brain tumor images with proper labeling and acquisition still have a problem with the accurate and reliable generation of realistic images of brain tumors that are completely different from the original ones. The artificially created medical image data would help improve the learning ability of physicians and other computer-aided systems for the generation of augmented data. To overcome the highlighted issue, a Generative Adversarial Network (GAN) deep learning technique… More >

Abstract Human brain consists of millions of cells to control the overall structure of the human body. When these cells start behaving abnormally, then brain tumors occurred. Precise and initial stage brain tumor detection has always been an issue in the field of medicines for medical experts. To handle this issue, various deep learning techniques for brain tumor detection and segmentation techniques have been developed, which worked on different datasets to obtain fruitful results, but the problem still exists for the initial stage of detection of brain tumors to save human lives. Abstract In the field of diagnosis of medical images the challenge lies in tracking and identifying the defective cells and the extent of the defective region within the complex structure of a brain cavity. Locating the defective cells precisely during the diagnosis phase helps to fight the greatest exterminator of mankind. Early detection of these defective cells requires an accurate computer-aided diagnostic system (CAD) that supports early treatment and promotes survival rates of patients. An earlier version of CAD systems relies greatly on the expertise of radiologist and it consumed more time to identify the defective… More >

Abstract The precise brain tumor diagnosis is critical and shows a vital role in the medical support for treating tumor patients. Manual brain tumor segmentation for cancer analysis from many Magnetic Resonance Images (MRIs) created in medical practice is a problematic and timewasting task for experts. As a result, there is a critical necessity for more accurate computer-aided methods for early tumor detection. To remove this gap, we enhanced the computational power of a computer-aided system by proposing a fine-tuned Block-Wise Visual Geometry Group19 (BW-VGG19) architecture. In this method, a pre-trained VGG19 is fine-tuned with CNN More >
