Suha Q. AL-Shahrabalee*, Hussein Alaa Jaber

    Journal of Renewable Materials, Vol.11, No.3, pp. 1485-1498, 2023, DOI:10.32604/jrm.2023.025011

Abstract Cancerous diseases and diseases resulting from bacteria and fungi are some of the pressures that humans face. Therefore, the development of biomaterials that are resistant to cancerous diseases, bacteria, and fungi has become one of the requirements of the medical field to extend the life of the biomaterial and fight pathogens after implanting these materials inside the human body. One of the important biomaterials used in the field of orthopedics is hydroxyapatite. In this research, Nano substituted hydroxyapatite was prepared by the wet precipitation method, including replacing 5% of the calcium ions with neodymium, cerium, magnesium, and zinc ions in… More > Graphic Abstract

    Journal of Renewable Materials, Vol.10, No.12, pp. 3559-3572, 2022, DOI:10.32604/jrm.2022.021945

    Abstract

Agave salmiana ash and poultry eggshell powder as CaO sources were used for obtaining nanostructured hydroxyapatite (HAP). The synthesis was carried out by the Green Chemistry Hydrothermal Biosynthesis at 180°C with a pH of 5, by reacting CaO from Agave Salmiana ash and Eggshell powder, with dibasic calcium phosphate (CaHPO4•2H2O) in an aqueous solution, with Aloe barbadensis extract. The product was characterized by X-ray diffraction, Fourier-transform infrared spectroscopy (FT-IR), Scanning Electron Microscopy (SEM), and Transmission Electron Microscopy (TEM). The size and shape of the hydroxyapatite particles changed dramatically in the presence of Aloe barbadensis. Large crystals of Hydroxyapatite were observed… More > Graphic Abstract

Mechanical and histological properties of an electrospun scaffold with a modified surface by plasma polymerization implanted in an in vivo model

    MARÍA G. FLORES-SÁNCHEZ1,*, ROBERTO OLAYO2, J. MORALES-CORONA2, ATLÁNTIDA M. RAYA-RIVERA3, DIEGO R. ESQUILIANO-RENDÓN3

    BIOCELL, Vol.46, No.3, pp. 829-836, 2022, DOI:10.32604/biocell.2022.016988

Abstract This article presents the construction of scaffolds composed of polylactic acid (PLA) with different concentrations of hydroxyapatite (HA) by electrospinning, which were superficially modified with polypyrrole (PPy/I) by plasma polymerization. A preliminary study was conducted of the biological and mechanical behavior of the scaffolds when they were implanted in the back of rabbits for 30 days; bone cells differentiated from mesenchymal stem cells (MSCs) were used. The bone cell and scaffold structures were characterized by histological, immunohistochemical, and mechanical stress tests. Hematoxylin–eosin staining showed good tissue conformation. The immunohistochemical tests highlighted the presence of the main bone tissue proteins, such… More >

Valorization of a Good Bioceramic from Moroccan Waste Fish Bone by a Heat Treatment Method

    Kaoutar Kara1,*, Fatiha Ouanji2, El Mostapha LOTFI1, Mohammed El Mahi1, Mohamed Kacimi2

    Journal of Renewable Materials, Vol.7, No.1, pp. 1-7, 2019, DOI:10.32604/jrm.2019.00016

Abstract A tricalcium phosphate (TCP) material was produced from sardine and mackerel waste using a heat treatment method after a Soxhlet extraction to obtain the non-soluble portion of fish waste. The bones were annealed at temperatures between 400°C and 1200°C. The thermal analysis (TG-DTA) was carried out to investigate the thermal stability of TCP and to confirm the removal of organic matter from the raw fish. The calcined bones were characterized by Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FT-IR), X-ray diffraction (XRD), and field emission scanning electron microscopy (FE-SEM). The calcium to phosphorous weight ratio was determined by ICP- AES. FT-IR and XRD… More >

    Journal of Renewable Materials, Vol.5, No.3-4, pp. 180-188, 2017, DOI:10.7569/JRM.2017.634106

Abstract In recent years, the development of composite biomaterials has been the subject of very intensive research. The elaboration of technology for manufacturing new biomaterials will allow their practical implementation and adaptation to changing market needs. One of the key components in the developed composite materials will be natural origin hydroxyapatite (HAp) and tricalcium phosphate (TCP) obtained from bone products. In this study, preparation and detailed characterization of bone-derived calcium phosphates as a component of biomaterial composites is proposed. This novel method of obtaining hydroxyapatite for biomedical applications allows the obtainment of a material with expected parameters. In this study, pork… More >

    Pranav S. Sapkal1*, Abhaykumar M. Kuthe1, Divya Ganapathy2, Shantanu C. Mathankar3, Sudhanshu Kuthe4

    Molecular & Cellular Biomechanics, Vol.13, No.2, pp. 115-136, 2016, DOI:10.3970/mcb.2016.013.131

Abstract Biphasic calcium phosphate scaffolds with 20/80 HA/TCP ratio were fabricated using the 3D-Bioplotting system to heal critical size defects in rabbit tibia bone. Four different architectures were printed in a layer by layer fashion with lay down patterns viz. (a) 0°– 90°, (b) 0°– 45°– 90°– 135°, (c) 0°–108°– 216° and (d) 0°– 60°– 120°. After high-temperature sintering scaffolds were coated with collagen and were further characterized by (FTIR) Fourier Transform Infrared Spectroscopy, (SEM) Scanning Electron Microscopy, (XRD) X-Ray diffraction, Porosity analysis and Mechanical testing. Scaffold samples were tested for its ability to induce cytotoxicity in Balb/c 3T3 cells at… More >

    R. Khanna1,2, D. R. Katti1, K. S. Katti1

    CMES-Computer Modeling in Engineering & Sciences, Vol.87, No.6, pp. 530-556, 2012, DOI:10.3970/cmes.2012.087.530

Abstract Here we report a new in situ nanoindentation technique developed to evaluate the composite mechanical behavior of cell-biomaterial construct under physiological conditions over the time scale of bone nodule generation. Using this technique, mechanical behavior of osteoblast cell-substrate interfaces on tissue engineered materials (chitosan-polygalacturonic acid-nanohydroxyapatite (CPH) films) is investigated. Mechanical behavior of cells in the elastic regime over the time scale of cell adhesion (1 day), proliferation (4 days), development (8 days) and maturation (22 days) of bone nodules is evaluated. Our results indicate that the elastic properties of flat cells are higher (indicating stiffer response, after 4 days, as… More >
