Photoprotective Effects of D1 Protein Turnover and the Lutein Cycle on Three Ephemeral Plants under Heat Stress

    Minmin Xiao1, Moxiang Cheng1, Shuangquan Xie1, Xiushuang Wang1, Xingming Hao2, Li Zhuang1,*

    Phyton-International Journal of Experimental Botany, Vol.92, No.6, pp. 1841-1857, 2023, DOI:10.32604/phyton.2023.027369 - 11 April 2023

Abstract To clarify the characteristics of photoinhibition and the primary defense mechanisms of ephemeral plant leaves against photodestruction under high temperature stress, inhibitors and the technology to determine chlorophyll fluorescence were used to explore the protective effects of D1 protein turnover and the lutein cycle in the high temperature stress of the leaves of three ephemeral plants. The results showed that the maximum light conversion efficiency (Fv/Fm) of the ephemeral plant leaves decreased, and the initial fluorescence (Fo) increased under 35°C ± 1°C heat stress for 1–4 h or on sunny days in the summer. Effects of Heat Stress during Seed Filling Stage on Brassica napus Seed Oil Accumulation and Chlorophyll Fluorescence Characteristics

    Ruizhi Huang1, Huasheng Yu2, Yong Yang1, Heqin Liu2, Xuelong Wu1, Zhihong Liu1, Haiyan He1, Gengwei Wu1, Wengjia Wang1, Hua Wang1,*

    Phyton-International Journal of Experimental Botany, Vol.92, No.2, pp. 333-348, 2023, DOI:10.32604/phyton.2022.023252 - 12 October 2022

Abstract As global temperature rise, the threat of heat stress to rapeseed production is becoming more obvious. Exploring the response characteristics of two important biological pathways, oil accumulation and photosynthesis, to heat stress during B. napus seed filling is helpful in the genetic improvement of heat-tolerant rapeseed. The effects of heat stress on seed oil accumulation and chlorophyll fluorescence characteristics of 29 B. napus germplasms with different oil content and environmental sensitivity, including 6 rapeseed varieties which exhibited environment-sensitive/insensitive and with high, medium or low oil content, were tested by whole plant heat stress or the in vitro silique… More >

Transcriptome Analysis via RNA Sequencing Reveals the Molecular Mechanisms Underlying the Hedera helix Response to High Temperature

    Ting Zhang1,2, Ping Li3,*, Jiali Wei3,*

    Phyton-International Journal of Experimental Botany, Vol.91, No.11, pp. 2403-2417, 2022, DOI:10.32604/phyton.2022.022421 - 12 July 2022

Abstract Hedera helix is an evergreen ornamental plant that is resistant to cool but not high temperature and deserves to be further researched for improving its adaptability to heat stress. Two Hedera helix cultivars, heat-tolerant (HT) ‘Jessica’ and heat-sensitive (HS) ‘Shamrock’, were used for differences analyses of transcriptome. We detected 6179 differentially expressed genes (DEGs) and 5992 DEGs in ‘Jessica’ and ‘Shamrock’ to heat stress, respectively. Among these, 1983 upregulated DEGs and 1400 downregulated DEGs were shared between both varieties, resulting in enhancement of various pathways such as biosynthesis of secondary metabolites, glyoxylate dicarboxylate metabolism, and protein processing… More >

Putrescine Enhances Seed Germination Tolerance to Heat Stress in Arabidopsis thaliana

Shiyan Lu, Yulan Hu, Yilin Chen, Yaru Yang, Yue Jin, Ping Li*, Xiangyang Hu*

    Phyton-International Journal of Experimental Botany, Vol.91, No.9, pp. 1879-1891, 2022, DOI:10.32604/phyton.2022.022605 - 13 May 2022

Abstract Putrescine (Put) as the compound of plant polyamines is catalyzed by arginine decarboxylase (ADC), which is encoded by two members, ADC1 and ADC2 in Arabidopsis, and ADC2 is mainly responsible for Put biosynthesis. Accumulated evidence demonstrates the important function of Put in plant growth and development, but its role in regulating seed germination under high temperature (HT) has not been reported yet. SOMNUS (SOM) is the negative regulator for seed germination thermoinhibition by altering downstream gibberellin (GA) and abscisic acid (ABA) metabolism. In this study, we found exogenous application of Put obviously alleviated the inhibition effect… More >

Response of Tomato Sugar and Acid Metabolism and Fruit Quality under Different High Temperature and Relative Humidity Conditions

    Yanjiao Zheng1, Zaiqiang Yang1,2,*, Tingting Wei1, Heli Zhao1

    Phyton-International Journal of Experimental Botany, Vol.91, No.9, pp. 2033-2054, 2022, DOI:10.32604/phyton.2022.019468 - 13 May 2022

Abstract The combined stress of high temperature and high relative air humidity is one of the most serious agrometeorological disasters that restricts the production capacity of protected agriculture. However, there is little information about the precise interaction between them on tomato fruit quality. The objectives of this study were to explore the effects of the combined stress of high temperature and relative humidity on the sugar and acid metabolism and fruit quality of tomato fruits, and to determine the best relative air humidity for fruit quality under high temperature environments. Four temperature treatments (32°C, 35°C, 38°C,… More >

Abstract Heat stress (HS) reaction can lead to serious physiological dysfunction associated with cardiovascular and various organ diseases. Ginsenoside Rg3 (G-Rg3) is a representative component of ginseng rare saponin and can protect against multiple organs, also used as functional food to adjust the balance of the human body, but the therapeutic effect and molecular mechanism of G-Rg3 on male diseases under HS are underexplored. The aim of the present study, G-Rg3 was prepared through the efficient conversion of ginsenoside Rd and investigate the contribution of G-Rg3 to testicular injury induced exposure to HS. All mice were… More >

    Naz N1, F Durrani1, Z Shah2, NA Khan1, I Ullah1

    Phyton-International Journal of Experimental Botany, Vol.87, pp. 225-230, 2018, DOI:10.32604/phyton.2018.87.225

Abstract The progress and development of crops like potato are harmfully affected by increased heat stress throughout the world. Stress caused by increased heat adversely affects germination and seedling growth which result in a reduced crop development and yield. The present research was carried out to know the influence of heat stress on growth indices and physiological processes of potato (Solanum tuberosum L.). The heat stresses C- Control (25 °C); T1-45 °C, and T2-40 °C were applied in separate growth chambers to the plants, after 25 days from their germination. Increased heat stress considerably decreased the chlorophyll More >
