    Phyton-International Journal of Experimental Botany, Vol.93, No.3, pp. 533-549, 2024, DOI:10.32604/phyton.2024.049417 - 28 March 2024

Abstract Grapes, one of the oldest tree species globally, are rich in vitamins. However, environmental conditions such as low temperature and soil salinization significantly affect grape yield and quality. The glutamate receptor (GLR) family, comprising highly conserved ligand-gated ion channels, regulates plant growth and development in response to stress. In this study, 11 members of the VvGLR gene family in grapes were identified using whole-genome sequence analysis. Bioinformatic methods were employed to analyze the basic physical and chemical properties, phylogenetic trees, conserved domains, motifs, expression patterns, and evolutionary relationships. Phylogenetic and collinear analyses revealed that the VvGLRs… More >

A Simple Clear Technique in Observing Vascular Development of Grape Ovary

    Teng Fei1, Youmei Li1, Bo Li2, Zhaosen Xie1,*

    Phyton-International Journal of Experimental Botany, Vol.92, No.7, pp. 2117-2132, 2023, DOI:10.32604/phyton.2023.028208 - 29 May 2023

Abstract The vascular system of the grapevine (Vitis vinifera L.) flower is a channel for transporting water and nutrients to the ovary. It plays an important role in the development of the ovary and fertilization through pollination. However, the vascular bundles in the flower are so tiny that they are difficult to sample and observe by traditional slicing techniques. In this study, ‘Summer Black’ grape flowers were selected as the test materials, and the tissue samples were treated by the optical clearing technique. After simple compaction, the structure and development of the vasculature were observed by common… More >

    Yue Wang1,#, Xiujie Li2,#, Yusen Wu2, Zhonghui Cai1, Bo Li2, Zhaosen Xie1,*

    Phyton-International Journal of Experimental Botany, Vol.92, No.6, pp. 1859-1871, 2023, DOI:10.32604/phyton.2023.027067 - 11 April 2023

Abstract It is generally agreed that many Vitis vinifera L. cultivars are self-fertile, where self-pollination often occurs before capfall in a process called cleistogamy. Therefore, it is difficult to identify the right time to remove stamens before self-pollination during the cross-breeding of grape. For this paper, we observed the process of grape flowering and measured the pollen viability and stigma receptivity of grape flowers of ‘Shine Muscat’ in order to identify the starting time of self-pollination before capfall and to provide useful information for improving the efficiency of cross-breeding. The results demonstrate that the anther is not… More >

Abstract Grape pistil has an important influence on fruit size and quality. However, there were few studies on grape ovary, and the development process of the ovary is still unclear. Therefore, in this paper, four different grape varieties with different lengths of small inflorescences, namely ‘Musct Hambourg’ grape (Vitis vinifera), ‘Concord’ grape (Vitis labrusca), ‘ShanPuTao’ grape (Vitis amurensis) and ‘GongNiang2Hao’ grape (Vitis amurensis × Vitis vinifera) were used as test materials. Four varieties ovary were significant differences by means of stereomicroscope, paraffin section. The expression of ovary determining gene VvAGAMOUS (VvAG) and its development related genes VvCRABS CLAW (VvCRC) and VvAGAMOUS-LIKE 11  (VvAGL11) with similar functions… More >
