    Adel A. Rezk1,2,*, Mohamed M. El-Malky3, Heba I. Mohamed4,*, Hossam S. El-Beltagi1,5

    Phyton-International Journal of Experimental Botany, Vol.93, No.7, pp. 1733-1748, 2024, DOI:10.32604/phyton.2024.052739 - 30 July 2024

Abstract Twenty-four rice genotypes were examined to assess genetic variability, heritability, and correlations for seven-grain quality traits, eight nutritional elements, and protein. ANOVA revealed significant differences for the quality traits studied. For every trait under study, the phenotypic coefficient of variation was higher than the correspondence genotypic coefficient of variation. Heritability in a broad sense varied from 29.75% for grain length to 98.31% for the elongation trait. Hulling percentage recovery had a highly significant positive correlation with milling and head rice percentage. Consequently, milling percentage had a highly positive correlation with head rice percentage. In amylose… More >

Abstract The availability of favorable genetic diversity is a thriving vitality for the success of a breeding program. It provides a firm basis of selecting superior breeding lines for the development of high yielding crop genotypes. In this context, present investigation aimed to generate information on genetic divergence and character association in a diversity panel of 123 local and exotic soybean genotypes. Analysis of variance revealed significant response of the evaluated genotypes based on studied attributes. It depicted the probability of selecting desirable soybean genotypes by focusing on character association studies and genetic diversity analysis. Correlation… More >

    Phyton-International Journal of Experimental Botany, Vol.91, No.12, pp. 2733-2758, 2022, DOI:10.32604/phyton.2022.022094 - 29 August 2022

Abstract Drought is the major detrimental environmental factor for wheat (Triticum aestivum L.) production. The exploration of genetic patterns underlying drought tolerance is of great significance. Here we report the gene actions controlling the phenological traits using the line × tester model studying 27 crosses and 12 parents under normal irrigation and drought conditions. The results interpreted via multiple analysis (mean performance, correlations, principal component, genetic analysis, heterotic and heterobeltiotic potential) disclosed highly significant differences among germplasm. The phenological waxiness traits (glume, boom, and sheath) were strongly interlinked. Flag leaf area exhibits a positive association with peduncle… More >

    Phyton-International Journal of Experimental Botany, Vol.91, No.8, pp. 1721-1743, 2022, DOI:10.32604/phyton.2022.021069 - 14 April 2022

Abstract Linseed is a multipurpose crop and the crop needs further improvement to increase production and yield due to its high value and demand. This study aimed to assess the extent and pattern of genetic variability of forty linseed genotypes based on diverse agro–morphological and yield attributes. The field experiment was conducted following a Randomized Complete Block Design with three replications. Linseed germplasm showed a wide range of phenotypic expression, genetic variability and heritability for 30 studied traits. A low to high phenotypic coeffi- cient of variation (PCV) and genotypic coefficient of variation (GCV) were observed.… More >

Effects of Different Geographical Aspects and Ontogenetic Variability on Total Hypericin Content of Hypericum triquetrifolium Turra. and Hypericum scabrum L.

    Emine Aslan, Dogan Arslan*

    Phyton-International Journal of Experimental Botany, Vol.89, No.4, pp. 1091-1099, 2020, DOI:10.32604/phyton.2020.010835 - 09 November 2020

Abstract The present study was conducted to determine the total hypericin contents of Hypericum triquetrifolium Turra. and Hypericum scabrum L. species which are naturally distributed in the flora of Siirt province, Turkey. Hypericin contents of Hypericum species grown in different geographical aspects (North, South, East, and West), and it was measured at different harvest times (full blooming and post blooming period). In the current study, it has been determined that total hypericin content varies considerably according to aspects, plant developmental stages (ontogenetic variance), and species. According to species x aspect interaction, the highest total hypericin content was recorded from… More >

Ethyl Methanesulfonate as Inductor of Somaclonal Variants in Different Crops

    José Gregorio Joya-Dávila, F. A. Gutiérrez-Miceli*

    Phyton-International Journal of Experimental Botany, Vol.89, No.4, pp. 835-850, 2020, DOI:10.32604/phyton.2020.013679 - 09 November 2020

Abstract Ethyl methanesulfonate is a chemical mutagen, which is currently being used in plant breeding, to increase genetic variability in genes of agronomic interest, of species useful in agriculture. It primarily causes single base point mutations by inducing guanine alkylation, resulting in GC to AT transitions. Its effect is different between clones of a genotype and between genotypes of the same species. This review presents the results obtained in recent research, where its effect on plant tissues, callus, and cells in suspension has been evaluated. Changes in the phenotypic expression of somaclonal variants were reported, involving… More >

Genetic variability of nanche in Tabasco, Mexico, determined with RAPDs

    Martínez ME1, JM Lesher G2, G Castañón N2, E de la Cruz L1, C Zapata H2

    Phyton-International Journal of Experimental Botany, Vol.82, pp. 209-214, 2013, DOI:10.32604/phyton.2013.82.209

Abstract Nanche (Byrsonima crassifolia (L.) H.B.K.) grows in the southeastern region of the Mexican republic under both wild and semi-cultivated forms. Despite the importance of the fruit of this tree, only one paper at the molecular level has been published in Mexico, and possibly in America, to date. For this reason, the purpose of this research was to study the genetic variability of nanche trees that grow under both wild and semi-cultivated conditions in the state of Tabasco, Mexico. Molecular determinations were carried out in the Laboratorio de Genómica of the División Académica de Ciencias Biológicas (DACBiológicas),… More >

Genetic variability of non-typical Azospirillum brasilense isolates by PCR-RFLP analysis of 16S ribosomal DNA

Pérez Castañeda LM, MA Cruz Hernández, A Mendoza Herrera

    Phyton-International Journal of Experimental Botany, Vol.80, pp. 27-34, 2011, DOI:10.32604/phyton.2011.80.027

Abstract Various studies have shown the symbiotic association of Azospirillum brasilense with different grasses of nutritional importance. A high variability among the isolated strains has been observed. This is consistent with the genetic diversity that Azospirillum has shown in sugarcane isolates. However, if this is also the case in maize and sorghum isolates is unknown. In addition, it has also been reported that most of the isolates come from tropical regions where water is not limiting for maize and sorghum production. We analyzed the genetic variability of Azospirillum brasilense isolates obtained from arid zones of Northeast Mexico in maize… More >

Alejandre Rosas1 JA, ME Galindo Tovar2, HE Lee Espinosa2, OG Alvarado Gómez3

    Phyton-International Journal of Experimental Botany, Vol.79, pp. 87-94, 2010, DOI:10.32604/phyton.2010.79.087

Abstract Development of new sugarcane varieties allows to increase sucrose production and faces challenges as new pests and diseases, and soil fertility losses. The objective of this study was to contribute to expand molecular tools in selecting useful progenitors for hybridization programs. With this purpose, 14 RAPDs primers were pre-screened, and four of them which produced clearly resolved, reproducible and polymorphic fragment patterns were selected for genetic analysis of 22 sugarcane variety hybrids. These were used in the Estación de Hibridación at Tapachula, Chiapas, as progenitors in genetic improvement programs. Genetic distance analysis showed three main More >
