Diffusion-Driven Generation of Synthetic Complex Concrete Crack Images for Segmentation Tasks

    Pengwei Guo1, Xiao Tan2,3,*, Yiming Liu4

    Structural Durability & Health Monitoring, Vol.20, No.1, 2026, DOI:10.32604/sdhm.2025.071317 - 08 January 2026

Abstract Crack detection accuracy in computer vision is often constrained by limited annotated datasets. Although Generative Adversarial Networks (GANs) have been applied for data augmentation, they frequently introduce blurs and artifacts. To address this challenge, this study leverages Denoising Diffusion Probabilistic Models (DDPMs) to generate high-quality synthetic crack images, enriching the training set with diverse and structurally consistent samples that enhance the crack segmentation. The proposed framework involves a two-stage pipeline: first, DDPMs are used to synthesize high-fidelity crack images that capture fine structural details. Second, these generated samples are combined with real data to train… More >

A Convolutional Neural Network-Based Deep Support Vector Machine for Parkinson’s Disease Detection with Small-Scale and Imbalanced Datasets

    Kwok Tai Chui1,*, Varsha Arya1, Brij B. Gupta2,3,4,*, Miguel Torres-Ruiz5, Razaz Waheeb Attar6

    CMC-Computers, Materials & Continua, Vol.86, No.1, pp. 1-23, 2026, DOI:10.32604/cmc.2025.068842 - 10 November 2025

Abstract Parkinson’s disease (PD) is a debilitating neurological disorder affecting over 10 million people worldwide. PD classification models using voice signals as input are common in the literature. It is believed that using deep learning algorithms further enhances performance; nevertheless, it is challenging due to the nature of small-scale and imbalanced PD datasets. This paper proposed a convolutional neural network-based deep support vector machine (CNN-DSVM) to automate the feature extraction process using CNN and extend the conventional SVM to a DSVM for better classification performance in small-scale PD datasets. A customized kernel function reduces the impact… More >

Calibrating Trust in Generative Artificial Intelligence: A Human-Centered Testing Framework with Adaptive Explainability

    Sewwandi Tennakoon1, Eric Danso1, Zhenjie Zhao2,*

    Journal on Artificial Intelligence, Vol.7, pp. 517-547, 2025, DOI:10.32604/jai.2025.072628 - 01 December 2025

Abstract Generative Artificial Intelligence (GenAI) systems have achieved remarkable capabilities across text, code, and image generation; however, their outputs remain prone to errors, hallucinations, and biases. Users often overtrust these outputs due to limited transparency, which can lead to misuse and decision errors. This study addresses the challenge of calibrating trust in GenAI through a human centered testing framework enhanced with adaptive explainability. We introduce a methodology that adjusts explanations dynamically according to user expertise, model output confidence, and contextual risk factors, providing guidance that is informative but not overwhelming. The framework was evaluated using outputs… More >

Xiao Jian Tan1,2,3,*, Wai Loon Cheor2, Ee Meng Cheng4,5, Chee Chin Lim3,4, Khairul Shakir Ab Rahman6

    CMC-Computers, Materials & Continua, Vol.84, No.2, pp. 2015-2060, 2025, DOI:10.32604/cmc.2025.063407 - 03 July 2025

Abstract This study systematically reviews the applications of generative artificial intelligence (GAI) in breast cancer research, focusing on its role in diagnosis and therapeutic development. While GAI has gained significant attention across various domains, its utility in breast cancer research has yet to be comprehensively reviewed. This study aims to fill that gap by synthesizing existing research into a unified document. A comprehensive search was conducted following Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic Reviews and Meta-Analyses (PRISMA) guidelines, resulting in the retrieval of 3827 articles, of which 31 were deemed eligible for analysis. The included studies were… More >

    Milad Moradi1,*, Ke Yan2, David Colwell2, Matthias Samwald3, Rhona Asgari1

    CMC-Computers, Materials & Continua, Vol.82, No.2, pp. 1681-1698, 2025, DOI:10.32604/cmc.2025.061263 - 17 February 2025

Abstract This critical review provides an in-depth analysis of Large Language Models (LLMs), encompassing their foundational principles, diverse applications, and advanced training methodologies. We critically examine the evolution from Recurrent Neural Networks (RNNs) to Transformer models, highlighting the significant advancements and innovations in LLM architectures. The review explores state-of-the-art techniques such as in-context learning and various fine-tuning approaches, with an emphasis on optimizing parameter efficiency. We also discuss methods for aligning LLMs with human preferences, including reinforcement learning frameworks and human feedback mechanisms. The emerging technique of retrieval-augmented generation, which integrates external knowledge into LLMs, is More >

HybridGAD: Identification of AI-Generated Radiology Abstracts Based on a Novel Hybrid Model with Attention Mechanism

    Tuğba Çelikten1, Aytuğ Onan2,*

    CMC-Computers, Materials & Continua, Vol.80, No.2, pp. 3351-3377, 2024, DOI:10.32604/cmc.2024.051574 - 15 August 2024

Abstract The purpose of this study is to develop a reliable method for distinguishing between AI-generated, paraphrased, and human-written texts, which is crucial for maintaining the integrity of research and ensuring accurate information flow in critical fields such as healthcare. To achieve this, we propose HybridGAD, a novel hybrid model that combines Long Short-Term Memory (LSTM), Bidirectional LSTM (Bi-LSTM), and Bidirectional Gated Recurrent Unit (Bi-GRU) architectures with an attention mechanism. Our methodology involves training this hybrid model on a dataset of radiology abstracts, encompassing texts generated by AI, paraphrased by AI, and written by humans. The… More >
