Crack Dynamics Propagation in the Fractured Geothermal Reservoir Under Thermo-Hydro-Mechanical-Chemical Coupling

    Weitao Zhang1, Dongxu Han2,*, Yujie Chen2, Tingyu Li3, Liang Gong1,*, Bo Yu2

The International Conference on Computational & Experimental Engineering and Sciences, Vol.30, No.1, pp. 1-2, 2024, DOI:10.32604/icces.2024.011484

Abstract As climate change accelerates due to fossil fuel use, geothermal energy emerges as an indispensable renewable solution 1. Hot dry rock (HDR) reservoirs, accounting for more than 90% of total geothermal resources 2, have gained wide attention worldwide for their abundant reserves, wide distribution, and carbon-free, stable, and efficient supply characteristics 3. While HDR geothermal energy offers significant potential, its development faces challenges, including the complex interaction between fluid flow, heat transfer, reactive solute transport, and the rock’s mechanical processes, referred to as the THMC coupling process 4. Cracks, ubiquitous in HDR geothermal reservoirs, exhibit… More >

Abstract Survey and novel research data are used in the present study to classify/identify the lithological type of Verey age reservoirs’ rocks. It is shown how the use of X-ray tomography can clarify the degree of heterogeneity, porosity and permeability of these rocks. These data are then used to elaborate a model of hydraulic fracturing. The resulting software can take into account the properties of proppant and breakdown fluid, thermal reservoir conditions, oil properties, well design data and even the filtration and elastic-mechanical properties of the rocks. Calculations of hydraulic fracturing crack formation are carried out… More > Graphic Abstract

Abstract Often oilfield fractured horizontal wells produce water flowing in multiple directions. In this study, a method to identify such channeling paths is developed. The dual-medium model is based on the principle of inter-well connectivity and considers the flow characteristics and related channeling terms. The Lorentz curve is drawn to qualitatively discern the geological type of the low-permeability fractured reservoir and determine the channeling direction and size. The practical application of such an approach to a sample oilfield shows that it can accurately identify the channeling paths of the considered low-permeability fractured reservoir and predict production More >

A Numerical Modelling Method of Fractured Reservoirs with Embedded Meshes and Topological Fracture Projection Configurations

    Xiang Rao1,2,*, Yina Liu1,2

    CMES-Computer Modeling in Engineering & Sciences, Vol.131, No.3, pp. 1403-1429, 2022, DOI:10.32604/cmes.2022.018879 - 19 April 2022

Abstract Projection-based embedded discrete fracture model (pEDFM) is an effective numerical model to handle the flow in fractured reservoirs, with high efficiency and strong generalization of flow models. However, this paper points out that pEDFM fails to handle flow barriers in most cases, and identifies the physical projection configuration of fractures is a key step in pEDFM. This paper presents and proves the equivalence theorem, which explains the geometric nature of physical projection configurations of fractures, that is, the projection configuration of a fracture being physical is equivalent to it being topologically homeomorphic to the fracture, More >

A Review of the Dynamic Modeling Approaches for Characterizing Fluid Flow in Naturally Fractured Reservoirs

    M. N. Tarhuni*, W. R. Sulaiman, M. Z. Jaafar, M. Milad, A. M. Alghol

    Energy Engineering, Vol.118, No.4, pp. 761-795, 2021, DOI:10.32604/EE.2021.016645 - 31 May 2021

Abstract Fluid flow in fractured media has been studied for decades and received considerable attention in the oil and gas industry because of the high productivity of naturally fractured reservoirs. Due to formation complexity and reservoir heterogeneity, characterizing fluid flow with an appropriate reservoir model presents a challenging task that differs relatively from homogeneous conventional reservoirs in many aspects of view, including geological, petrophysical, production, and economics. In most fractured reservoirs, fracture networks create complex pathways that affect hydrocarbon flow, well performance, hence reservoir characterization. A better and comprehensive understanding of the available reservoir modeling approaches… More >
