    Wenhao Shen1,2,*, Moubin Liu2

The International Conference on Computational & Experimental Engineering and Sciences, Vol.29, No.2, pp. 1-1, 2024, DOI:10.32604/icces.2024.011418

Abstract In this talk, we will present a SPH formulation for coupled Thermal-Hydraulic-Mechanical processes. The Biot’s theory is used to model the fluid-solid interaction of saturated porous media, the Fourier’s law and the Newton’s law of cooling are used to describe the thermal conduction in a single medium and the heat exchange between the fluid and the solid, respectively. The physical model is expressed in the initial reference, and the total Lagrangian SPH is used to build the discrete formulation. We will discuss the numerical instability induced by twice repeated derivatives of discontinuous physical quantities, and More >

Abstract Molasses can serve as a natural adhesive for plywood and particleboard. However, several disadvantages remain, including lower dimensional stability and low bonding strength compared to other adhesives. Therefore, modifications are needed to use molasses as an adhesive for plywood. This research aims to improve bio-based molasses (MO) adhesive for plywood using citric acid (CA) adhesive. In addition, this research aims to analyze the effect of adding citric acid and to investigate the optimum hot-pressing temperature to produce the best quality plywood. In the first stage, the molasses and citric acid were combined in a ratio… More > Graphic Abstract

AI Fairness–From Machine Learning to Federated Learning

    Lalit Mohan Patnaik1,5, Wenfeng Wang2,3,4,5,6,*

    CMES-Computer Modeling in Engineering & Sciences, Vol.139, No.2, pp. 1203-1215, 2024, DOI:10.32604/cmes.2023.029451 - 29 January 2024

Abstract This article reviews the theory of fairness in AI–from machine learning to federated learning, where the constraints on precision AI fairness and perspective solutions are also discussed. For a reliable and quantitative evaluation of AI fairness, many associated concepts have been proposed, formulated and classified. However, the inexplicability of machine learning systems makes it almost impossible to include all necessary details in the modelling stage to ensure fairness. The privacy worries induce the data unfairness and hence, the biases in the datasets for evaluating AI fairness are unavoidable. The imbalance between algorithms’ utility and humanization More >

Abstract Cancer is a leading cause of death globally, with limited treatment options and several limitations. Chemotherapeutic agents often result in toxicity which long-term conventional treatment. Phytochemicals are natural constituents that are more effective in treating various diseases with less toxicity than the chemotherapeutic agents providing alternative therapeutic approaches to minimize the resistance. These phytoconstituents act in several ways and deliver optimum effectiveness against cancer. Nevertheless, the effectiveness of phyto-formulations in the management of cancers may be constrained due to challenges related to inadequate solubility, bioavailability, and stability. Nanotechnology presents a promising avenue for transforming current… More > Graphic Abstract

Reformulation of the Virtual Fields Method Based on the Variation of Elastic Energy for Hyperelastic Materials

    Mingliang Jiang1, Zhujiang Wang2,*

The International Conference on Computational & Experimental Engineering and Sciences, Vol.26, No.2, pp. 1-1, 2023, DOI:10.32604/icces.2023.08949

Abstract This work deals with the parameter identification of invariant-based hyperelastic materials using the virtual fields method (VFM). Combined with the full-field deformation data obtained from the digital image correlation (DIC), VFM has been utilized to characterize the mechanical properties of hyperelastic materials [1]. In the conventional formulation of the VFM, the calculation of the internal virtual work (IVW) needs to obtain the stress and conjugate virtual strains, which requires a lot of calculation and derivation work. In this paper, the VFM is reformulated by calculating the IVW through the variation of elastic energy, which is More >

Peridynamic Material Correspondence Models: Bond-Associated and Higher-Order Formulations

    Hailong Chen1,*, Wailam Chan1

The International Conference on Computational & Experimental Engineering and Sciences, Vol.25, No.1, pp. 1-1, 2023, DOI:10.32604/icces.2023.09835

Abstract The conventional peridynamic material correspondence model suffers from the well-known issue of material instability. The material instability in peridynamics can be understood as the existence of nonunique mapping between deformation states and the resultant force state. This instability poses practical difficulties while using the correspondence model in computational modeling. One consequence of this instability is the oscillation in the predicted displacement field, i.e., existence of zero-energy modes. Bondassociated correspondence formulations have been proposed to inherently remove the material instability. Different from the conventional formulation, bond-associated formulations are developed based on the concept of bond-associated deformation… More >

Experimental and Numerical Investigation on High-Pressure Centrifugal Pumps: Ultimate Pressure Formulation, Fatigue Life Assessment and Topological Optimization of Discharge Section

    Abdourahamane Salifou Adam1, Hatem Mrad1, Haykel Marouani2,*, Yasser Fouad3

    CMES-Computer Modeling in Engineering & Sciences, Vol.137, No.3, pp. 2845-2865, 2023, DOI:10.32604/cmes.2023.030777 - 03 August 2023

Abstract A high percentage of failure in pump elements originates from fatigue. This study focuses on the discharge section behavior, made of ductile iron, under dynamic load. An experimental protocol is established to collect the strain under pressurization and depressurization tests at specific locations. These experimental results are used to formulate the ultimate pressure expression function of the strain and the lateral surface of the discharge section and to validate finite element modeling. Fe-Safe is then used to assess the fatigue life cycle using different types of fatigue criteria (Coffin-Manson, Morrow, Goodman, and Soderberg). When the… More >

Little Secrets for the Successful Industrial Use of Tannin Adhesives: A Review

    Antonio Pizzi*

    Journal of Renewable Materials, Vol.11, No.9, pp. 3403-3415, 2023, DOI:10.32604/jrm.2023.030930 - 20 July 2023

Abstract This brief article reviews a very particular and quite narrow field, namely what has been done and what is needed to know for tannin adhesives for wood panels to succeed industrially. The present fashionable focus on bioadhesives has led to producing chemical adhesive formulations and approaches for tannin adhesives as a subject of academic publications. These, as good and original they might be, are and will still remain a rather empty academic exercise if not put to the test of real industrial trials and industrial use. They will remain so without the “little” secrets and… More >

A Modified Formulation of Singular Boundary Method for Exterior Acoustics

Yi Wu, Zhuojia Fu*, Jian Min

    CMES-Computer Modeling in Engineering & Sciences, Vol.135, No.1, pp. 377-393, 2023, DOI:10.32604/cmes.2022.023205 - 29 September 2022

Abstract This paper proposes a modified formulation of the singular boundary method (SBM) by introducing the combined Helmholtz integral equation formulation (CHIEF) and the self-regularization technique to exterior acoustics. In the SBM, the concept of the origin intensity factor (OIF) is introduced to avoid the singularities of the fundamental solutions. The SBM belongs to the meshless boundary collocation methods. The additional use of the CHIEF scheme and the self-regularization technique in the SBM guarantees the unique solution of the exterior acoustics accurately and efficiently. Consequently, by using the SBM coupled with the CHIEF scheme and the More >

    Journal of Renewable Materials, Vol.11, No.2, pp. 777-789, 2023, DOI:10.32604/jrm.2022.022811 - 22 September 2022

Abstract Difenoconazole (DIF) is a representative variety of broad-spectrum triazole fungicides and liposoluble pesticides. However, the water solubility of DIF is so poor that its application is limited in plant protection. In addition, the conventional formulations of DIF always contain abundant organic solvents, which may cause pollution of the environment. In this study, two DIF/cyclodextrins (CDs) inclusion complexes (ICs) were successfully prepared, which were DIF/β-CD IC and DIF/hydroxypropyl-β-CD IC (DIF/HP-β-CD IC). The effect of cyclodextrins on the water solubility and the antifungal effect of liposoluble DIF pesticide were investigated. According to the phase solubility test, the More >
