    Pshtiwan Shakor1,2,*, Nadarajah Gowripalan3, Paul Rocker4

    Structural Durability & Health Monitoring, Vol.18, No.4, pp. 395-408, 2024, DOI:10.32604/sdhm.2024.049366

Abstract Self-compacting concrete (SCC) is the most flowable concrete type that exerts high pressure on formwork. SCC is the most commonly used concrete globally for construction applications due to its cost-effectiveness. However, to make a formwork resist the exerted lateral pressure of SCC, it is required to have a suitable design for formwork. This paper presents a novel approach on how could create and prepare the Fiber Bragg Grating (FBG) optics using as a sensor to measure lateral pressure and temperature of SCC. To ensure the FBG sensor works properly a validated methodology is conducted. In More > Graphic Abstract

Identification of Damage in Steel‒Concrete Composite Beams Based on Wavelet Analysis and Deep Learning

Chengpeng Zhang, Junfeng Shi*, Caiping Huang

    Structural Durability & Health Monitoring, Vol.18, No.4, pp. 465-483, 2024, DOI:10.32604/sdhm.2024.048705

Abstract In this paper, an intelligent damage detection approach is proposed for steel-concrete composite beams based on deep learning and wavelet analysis. To demonstrate the feasibility of this approach, first, following the guidelines provided by relevant standards, steel-concrete composite beams are designed, and six different damage incidents are established. Second, a steel ball is used for free-fall excitation on the surface of the steel-concrete composite beams and a low-temperature-sensitive quasi-distributed long-gauge fiber Bragg grating (FBG) strain sensor is used to obtain the strain signals of the steel-concrete composite beams with different damage types. To reduce the… More >

    CMES-Computer Modeling in Engineering & Sciences, Vol.135, No.1, pp. 301-323, 2023, DOI:10.32604/cmes.2022.022144

Abstract Sensors play an important role in shaping and monitoring human health. Exploration of methods to use Fiber Bragg Grating (FBG) with enhanced sensitivity has attracted great interest in the field of medical research. In this paper, a novel apodization function is proposed and performance evaluation and optimization of the same have been made. A comparison was conducted between various existing apodization functions and the proposed one based on optical characteristics and sensor parameters. The results evince the implementation of the proposed apodization function for vital sign measurement. The optical characteristics considered for evaluation are Peak… More > Graphic Abstract

    M. Adjailia1, H. Derbal Habak2,*, Y. Hamaizi1, H. Triki1

    FDMP-Fluid Dynamics & Materials Processing, Vol.19, No.3, pp. 831-844, 2023, DOI:10.32604/fdmp.2022.022162

Abstract Fiber Bragg grating (FBG) sensors are often used in monitoring activities and to ensure that environmental parameters satisfy industrial requirements. They offer crucial safety measures in the early detection of hazards due to their greatly reduced size, low weight, flexibility, and immunity to electromagnetic interference. These characteristics make FBGs suitable also for use in relation to the human body for in vivo measurements and long-term monitoring. In this study, recent developments are presented with regard to the utilization of these sensors to measure the so-called post-mortem interval (PMI). Such developments rely on numerical simulations based on More >

Kelong Huang, Jie Yan, Lei Zhang*, Faye Zhang, Mingshun Jiang, Qingmei Sui

    Structural Durability & Health Monitoring, Vol.16, No.2, pp. 179-194, 2022, DOI:10.32604/sdhm.2022.018202

Abstract A structural displacement field reconstruction method is proposed to aim at the problems of deformation monitoring and displacement field reconstruction of flexible plate-like structures in the aerospace field. This method combines the deep neural network model of the cross-layer connection structure with the fiber grating sensor network. This paper first introduces the principle of strain detection of fiber grating sensor, studies the mapping relationship between strain and displacement, and proposes a strain-displacement conversion model based on an improved neural network. Then the intelligent structure deformation monitoring system is built. By controlling the stepping distance of… More >

An Application of Support Vector Regression for Impact Load Estimation Using Fiber Bragg Grating Sensors

Clyde K Coelho, Cristobal Hiche, Aditi Chattopadhyay

    Structural Durability & Health Monitoring, Vol.7, No.1&2, pp. 65-82, 2011, DOI:10.3970/sdhm.2011.007.065

Abstract Low velocity impacts on composite plates often create subsurface damage that is difficult to diagnose. Fiber Bragg grating (FBG) sensors can be used to detect subsurface damage in composite laminates due to low velocity impact. This paper focuses on the prediction of impact loading in composite structures as a function of time using a support vector regression approach. A time delay embedding feature extraction scheme is used since it can characterize the dynamics of the impact using the sensor signals. The novelty of this approach is that it can be applied on complex geometries and… More >

    K.C. Chuang, C.C. Ma, C.H. Wang

The International Conference on Computational & Experimental Engineering and Sciences, Vol.19, No.1, pp. 1-2, 2011, DOI:10.3970/icces.2011.019.001

Abstract Smart flexible structures involve four key elements: actuators, sensors, control strategies, and power conditioning electronics, which makes the structures being capable of realizing specific functions. Recently, fiber Bragg grating (FBG) strain sensors are being considered to be integrated into smart structures since they possess many excellent properties such as low density, small size, simplicity of fabrication, and immunity to electromagnetic fields. In this paper, unlike traditional FBG strain sensors, a fiber Bragg grating (FBG) sensing system which has the ability to detect point-wise out-of-plane displacement responses is set up on a smart cantilever beam to… More >

Strain Transfer Mechanism of Grating Ends Fiber Bragg Grating for Structural Health Monitoring

    Guang Chen1,*, Keqin Ding1, Qibo Feng2, Xinran Yin1, Fangxiong Tang1

    Structural Durability & Health Monitoring, Vol.13, No.3, pp. 289-301, 2019, DOI:10.32604/sdhm.2019.05144

Abstract The grating ends bonding fiber Bragg grating (FBG) sensor has been widely used in sensor packages such as substrate type and clamp type for health monitoring of large structures. However, owing to the shear deformation of the adhesive layer of FBG, the strain measured by FBG is often different from the strain of actual matrix, which causes strain measurement errors. This investigation aims at improving the measurement accuracy of strain for the grating ends surface-bonded FBG. To fulfill this objective, a strain transfer equation of the grating ends bonding FBG is derived, and a theoretical… More >
