Abstract Liver cancer is a prevalent malignant cancer, ranking third in terms of mortality rate. Metastasis and recurrence primarily contribute to the high mortality rate of liver cancer. Hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC) has low expression of focal adhesion kinase (FAK), which increases the risk of metastasis and recurrence. Nevertheless, the efficacy of FAK phosphorylation inhibitors is currently limited. Thus, investigating the mechanisms by which FAK affects HCC metastasis to develop targeted therapies for FAK may present a novel strategy to inhibit HCC metastasis. This study examined the correlation between FAK expression and the prognosis of HCC. Additionally, we explored the impact of… More >

Abstract Pancreatic ductal adenocarcinoma (PDAC) is one of the most aggressive solid malignancies. A specific mechanism of its metastasis has not been established. In this study, we investigated whether Neural Wiskott-Aldrich syndrome protein (N-WASP) plays a role in distant metastasis of PDAC. We found that N-WASP is markedly expressed in clinical patients with PDAC. Clinical analysis showed a notably more distant metastatic pattern in the N-WASP-high group compared to the N-WASP-low group. N-WASP was noted to be a novel mediator of epithelial-mesenchymal transition (EMT) via gene expression profile studies. Knockdown of N-WASP in pancreatic cancer cells significantly inhibited cell invasion, migration,… More > Graphic Abstract

    BIOCELL, Vol.47, No.11, pp. 2321-2334, 2023, DOI:10.32604/biocell.2023.043796

Abstract The biointerface dynamics influence any cancer spreading through the epithelium since it is documented in the early stages some malignancies (like epithelial cancer). The altered rearrangement of epithelial cells has an impact on the development of cancer. Therefore, it is necessary to comprehend the underlying biological and physical mechanisms of this biointerface dynamics for early suppression of cancer. While the biological mechanisms include cell signaling and gene expression, the physical mechanisms are several physical parameters such as the epithelial-cancer interfacial tension, epithelial surface tension, and compressive stress accumulated within the epithelium. Although the segregation of epithelia-cancer co-cultured systems was widely… More > Graphic Abstract

Abstract Background: ((1-triphenylaminebenzo[c][1,2,5] thiadiazole-4-yl) styryl)-1-methylpyridin methylpyridin-1-ium iodide salt (TBZPy) is a novel photosensitizer that displays excellent photodynamic properties. However, There are few reports on the mechanism of action of the TBZPy photodynamic. Previous studies revealed that photodynamic therapy (PDT) could induce endoplasmic reticulum stress by acting on the endoplasmic reticulum. Therefore, in this study, we investigated the effects of endoplasmic reticulum stress induced by TBZPy-PDT in treating High-risk human papillomavirus (HR-HPV) infection and their underlying mechanisms. Methods: The human cervical cancer cell line HeLa (containing whole genome of HR-HPV18) was treated with TBZPy-PDT. Cell migration, invasion, and colony-forming ability were evaluated… More > Graphic Abstract

Anti-fibrotic and anti-inflammatory effect of mesenchymal stromal cell-derived extracellular vesicles in chronic kidney disease

    GIULIA CHIABOTTO1,*, STEFANIA BRUNO2,*

    BIOCELL, Vol.47, No.7, pp. 1499-1508, 2023, DOI:10.32604/biocell.2023.028121

Abstract Renal fibrosis and inflammation are common pathological features of chronic kidney disease (CKD). Since currently available treatments can only delay the progression of CKD, the outcome of patients with CKD is still poor. One therapeutic option for the prevention of CKD-related complications could be the use of mesenchymal stromal cells (MSCs), which have shown beneficial effects in tissue fibrosis and regeneration after damage. However, safety issues, such as cellular rejection and carcinogenicity, limit their clinical application. Among the bioactive factors secreted by MSCs, extracellular vesicles (EVs) have shown the same beneficial effect of MSCs, without any notable side effects. This… More > Graphic Abstract
