Evaluation of Beta-Lactam Antibiotics on the Regeneration of Peanut Plants and Their Inhibitory Effect on Agrobacterium Growth

    Abraham Lamboro1,3,*, Songnan Yang1, Xueying Li1, Dan Yao2, Jun Zhang1,*

    Phyton-International Journal of Experimental Botany, Vol.92, No.9, pp. 2489-2501, 2023, DOI:10.32604/phyton.2023.029492 - 28 July 2023

Abstract The effect of beta-lactam antibiotics on shoot induction and plantlet regeneration from cotyledonary nodes was tested using two peanut cultivars. The culture media contained 4 mg/L 6-benzylaminopurine (BAP) as the main growth regulator. Various concentrations (100–600 mg/L) of cefotaxime, carbenicillin, and timentin were applied in the culture media. In all the tested media, there were no significant differences in the shoot induction as compared to the control. However, little phytotoxic effect was observed at higher concentrations of these antibiotics in the shoot elongation media. Under shoot elongation medium, shoots turned brownish and partly died at… More >

Combination of 6-Benzylaminopurine and Thidiazuron Promotes Highly Efficient Shoot Regeneration from Cotyledonary Node of Mature Peanut (Arachis hypogaea L.) Cultivars

    Abraham Lamboro1,*, Xiao Han1, Songnan Yang1, Xueying Li1, Dan Yao2, Baixing Song1, Jun Zhang1,*

    Phyton-International Journal of Experimental Botany, Vol.91, No.12, pp. 2619-2631, 2022, DOI:10.32604/phyton.2022.021404 - 29 August 2022

Abstract Efficient in vitro plantlet regeneration is an important step to successfully transform genes for the improvement of agronomic traits. A combination of 6-benzylaminopurine (BAP) and thidiazuron (TDZ) plant growth regulators was applied to evaluate shoot regeneration capacity whereas α-naphthalene acetic acid (NAA) combination with 6-benzylaminopurine (BAP), and 2, 4-dichlorophenoxyacetic acid (2, 4-D) with 6-benzylaminopurine were tested to optimize root induction for two peanut cultivars. The result showed combination (BAP with TDZ) was found to be effective in promoting shoot. The highest shoot regeneration frequency (93%) was obtained on a medium supplemented with 4 mg/L BAP and 0.5 mg/L… More >

Germination and Photosynthetic Responses to Salinity and Alkalinity in Avicenna marina Propagules

    Abdallah Atia1,2,*, Ahmed Abdallah Hussain3,4, Barhoumi Zouhaier3,5

    Phyton-International Journal of Experimental Botany, Vol.91, No.5, pp. 1015-1026, 2022, DOI:10.32604/phyton.2022.017778 - 24 January 2022

Abstract Avicenna marina (Forssk.) Vierh is a halophytic mangrove. The reproductive unit is green and has photosynthetic propagules. Mangroves are naturally exposed to fluctuations in some abiotic factors at the soil surface, including salinity and alkalinity. The objective of this study was to determine the effects of two salts including NaCl and NaHCO3 on germination processes and discuss the relationships between cotyledon photosynthesis and embryo axis growth in A. marina propagules. These propagules came from Al Birk, located on the shoreline of the Saudi Red Sea. The results showed that the studied salts did not affect neither the final More >

Seed Germination Traits of Loquat (Eriobotrya japonica Lindl.) as Affected by Various Pre-Sowing Treatments (Cutting of Cotyledons, Removal of Perisperm, Moist Chilling and/or Exogenous Application of Gibberellin)

    Thiresia-Teresa Tzatzani1, Evangelia Basdeki2, Evangelia-Vasiliki Ladikou3, Marios-Ioannis N. Sotiras3, Georgios Panagiotakis4, Sryridon Lionakis4, Ioannis E. Papadakis3,*

    Phyton-International Journal of Experimental Botany, Vol.89, No.3, pp. 645-656, 2020, DOI:10.32604/phyton.2020.010532 - 22 June 2020

Abstract The purpose of this study was to investigate the effects of various presowing treatments on the germinability (final germination percentage) and germination rate of loquat seeds in order to increase seedling production in nurseries (applied research) as well as provide answers for important physiological issues related to loquat seeds and their seed coat (basic research). Three experiments were carried out with various pre-sowing treatments. These treatments included full or partial removal of seed coat (perisperm), partial cutting of cotyledons as well as moist chilling at 5°C for 13 days and/or soaking the seeds in water… More >
