The International Conference on Computational & Experimental Engineering and Sciences, Vol.29, No.3, pp. 1-2, 2024, DOI:10.32604/icces.2024.011281

Abstract Penetration of syringe needles into the rubber plug of vials occurs daily in usual medical operation, but in nature, it is a complex mechanical process concerning the deformation, friction and failure of materials. Micro particles could be generated during the fracture process of plug and needle friction during penetration. Actually, the structural configuration of needle pin plays an important role besides of plug itself. In this work, mechanical behaviors of butyl rubber and needle material are obtained firstly, after performing various strain rate experiments based on Instron 5848 machine and Hopkinson bar technique. And their… More >

Abstract This study explores the implementation of computed tomography (CT) reconstruction and simulation techniques for patient-specific valves, aiming to dissect the mechanical attributes of calcified valves within transcatheter heart valve replacement (TAVR) procedures. In order to facilitate this exploration, it derives pertinent formulas for 3D multi-material isogeometric hyperelastic analysis based on Hounsfield unit (HU) values, thereby unlocking foundational capabilities for isogeometric analysis in calcified aortic valves. A series of uniaxial and biaxial tensile tests is executed to obtain an accurate constitutive model for calcified active valves. To mitigate discretization errors, methodologies for reconstructing volumetric parametric models, More > Graphic Abstract

    Yousef Y. Sewar1, Zhancheng Zhang1, Xinmiao Meng1,*, Mohammed Y. Wahan1, Hanxiao Qi1,2, Qahtan M. Al-Shami1,3, Shijiao Luo1

    Journal of Renewable Materials, Vol.10, No.1, pp. 219-235, 2022, DOI:10.32604/jrm.2021.016013 - 27 July 2021

Abstract Engineered bamboo has recently received lots of attention of civil engineers and professional researchers due to its better mechanical performance than that of softwood timber. Parallel strand bamboo is one important part of engineered bamboo for its excellent durable performance compared to the laminated veneer bamboo. The required curing temperature in hot-pressing process is usually higher than 120°C to reduce the content of nutritional ingredients and hemy cellulose, and to avoid the decay from the environment and insects. Nonetheless, the appearance of engineered bamboo gets darker with the increase of temperature during the hot-pressing process.… More > Graphic Abstract

    Ying Xiao1,2, Haomiao Zhou1, Xiaofan Gou2,*

    CMC-Computers, Materials & Continua, Vol.54, No.3, pp. 209-228, 2018, DOI:10.3970/cmc.2018.054.209

Abstract In order to predict the performance of magnetostrictive smart material and push its applications in engineering, it is necessary to build the constitutive relations for the magnetostrictive material Galfenol. For Galfenol rods under the action of the pre-stress and magnetic field along the axial direction, the one-dimensional nonlinear magneto-mechanical coupling constitutive model is proposed based on the elastic Gibbs free energy, where the Taylor expansion of the elastic Gibbs free energy is made to obtain the polynomial forms. And then the constitutive relations are derived by replacing the polynomial forms with the proper transcendental functions… More >

The Constitutive Relation of a Fabric Membrane Composite for a Stratospheric Airship Envelope Based on Invariant Theory

    Junhui Meng1,*, Mingyun Lv2

    CMC-Computers, Materials & Continua, Vol.53, No.2, pp. 73-89, 2017, DOI:10.3970/cmc.2017.053.073

Abstract The study of stratospheric airships has become the focus in many countries in recent years, because of its potential applications in many fields. Lightweight and high strength envelopes are the keys to the design of stratospheric airships, as it directly determines the endurance flight performance and loading deformation characteristics of the airship. A typical envelope of any stratospheric airship is a coated-fabric material which is composed of a fiber layer and several functional membrane layers. According to composite structure, nonlinearity and viscoelasticity are the two main characteristics of such envelope. Based on the analysis on More >

Cytoplasmic Motion Induced by Cytoskeleton Stretching and Its Effect on Cell Mechanics

    T. Zhang*

    Molecular & Cellular Biomechanics, Vol.8, No.3, pp. 169-194, 2011, DOI:10.3970/mcb.2011.008.169

Abstract Cytoplasmic motion assumed as a steady state laminar flow induced by cytoskeleton stretching in a cell is determined and its effect on the mechanical behavior of the cell under externally applied forces is demonstrated. Non-Newtonian fluid is assumed for the multiphase cytoplasmic fluid and the analytical velocity field around the macromolecular chain is obtained by solving the reduced nonlinear momentum equation using homotopy technique. The entropy generation by the fluid internal friction is calculated and incorporated into the entropic elasticity based 8-chain constitutive relations. Numerical examples showed strengthening behavior of cells in response to externally More >

    CMC-Computers, Materials & Continua, Vol.24, No.2, pp. 143-162, 2011, DOI:10.3970/cmc.2011.024.143

Abstract This paper is concerned with a 3-D general constitutive law of nonlinear magneto-thermo-elastic coupling for magnetostrictive materials. The model considered here is thermodynamically motivated and based on the Gibbs free energy function. A set of closed and analytical expressions of the constitutive relationships for the magnetostrictive materials are obtained, in which all parameters can be determined by those measurable experiments in mechanics and physics. Then the model can be simplified to two cases, i.e. magnetostrictive rods and films. It is found that the predictions from this model are in good accordance with the experimental data More >

Constitutive Relation for Friction Describing Transition from Static to Kinetic Friction and Vice Versa

    K. Hashiguchi1, S. Ozaki2

The International Conference on Computational & Experimental Engineering and Sciences, Vol.6, No.2, pp. 125-132, 2008, DOI:10.3970/icces.2008.006.125

Abstract The subloading-friction model with a smooth elastic-plastic sliding transition is extended so as to describe the reduction from the static to kinetic friction and the recovery of static friction. The reduction is formulated as the plastic softening due to the separations of the adhesions of surface asperities induced by the sliding and the recovery is formulated as the creep hardening due to the reconstructions of the adhesions of surface asperities during the elapse of time under a quite high actual contact pressure between edges of asperities.
