    Journal of Renewable Materials, Vol.12, No.1, pp. 29-43, 2024, DOI:10.32604/jrm.2023.043449 - 23 January 2024

Abstract The study focuses on the development of biocompatible and stable FA-functionalized nanocrystalline cellulose (NCC) as a potential drug delivery system for targeting folate receptor-positive cancer cells. The FA-functionalized NCCs were synthesized through a series of chemical reactions, resulting in nanoparticles with favorable properties for biomedical applications. The microstructural analysis revealed that the functionalized NCCs maintained their rod-shaped morphology and displayed hydrodynamic diameters suitable for evading the mononuclear phagocytic system while being large enough to target tumor tissues. Importantly, these nanoparticles possessed a negative surface charge, enhancing their stability and repelling potential aggregation. The binding specificity… More > Graphic Abstract

    Energy Engineering, Vol.120, No.11, pp. 2547-2563, 2023, DOI:10.32604/ee.2023.027045 - 31 October 2023

Abstract A novel operation control method for relay protection in flexible DC distribution networks with distributed power supply is proposed to address the issue of inaccurate fault location during relay protection, leading to poor performance. The method combines a fault-tolerant fault location method based on long-term and short-term memory networks to accurately locate the fault section. Then, an operation control method for relay protection based on adaptive weight and whale optimization algorithm (WOA) is used to construct an objective function considering the shortest relay protection action time and the smallest impulse current. The adaptive weight and More >

    Journal of Polymer Materials, Vol.39, No.1-2, pp. 167-181, 2022, DOI:10.32381/JPM.2022.39.1-2.11

Abstract Silk fibroin (SF) with renewability, biocompatibility and biodegradability shows potential application in various fields including biomedicine, tissue engineering, and wearable electronic devices. Herein, SF is used to exert effective reinforcement of polyvinyl alcohol (PVA) composite film to further improve its practicability. As such, PVA/SF composite films were prepared for the first time using a facile approach. The films were characterized to investigate possible interaction of PVA with SF. Meanwhile, systematic investigations have also been completed to explore the influences of PVA/SF mass ratio on the mechanical properties (tensile strength, elongation at break), biodegradability and biocompatibility, More >

    Yuxi Xie, Shaofan Li*

    CMES-Computer Modeling in Engineering & Sciences, Vol.129, No.3, pp. 1419-1440, 2021, DOI:10.32604/cmes.2021.016756 - 25 November 2021

Abstract The microstructure of crystal defects, e.g., dislocation patterns, are not arbitrary, and it is possible that some of them may be related to the microstructure of crystals itself, i.e., the lattice structure. We call those dislocation patterns or substructures that are related to the corresponding crystal microstructure as the Geometrically Compatible Dislocation Patterns (GCDP). Based on this notion, we have developed a Multiscale Crystal Defect Dynamics (MCDD) to model crystal plasticity without or with minimum empiricism. In this work, we employ the multiscale dislocation pattern dynamics, i.e., MCDD, to simulate crystal plasticity in body-centered cubic (BCC) single More >

Jian Tang, Zhihua Xia*, Lan Wang, Chengsheng Yuan, Xueli Zhao

    Journal on Big Data, Vol.3, No.1, pp. 21-33, 2021, DOI:10.32604/jbd.2021.015892 - 25 January 2021

Abstract As the wide application of imaging technology, the number of big image data which may containing private information is growing fast. Due to insufficient computing power and storage space for local server device, many people hand over these images to cloud servers for management. But actually, it is unsafe to store the images to the cloud, so encryption becomes a necessary step before uploading to reduce the risk of privacy leakage. However, it is not conducive to the efficient application of image, especially in the Content-Based Image Retrieval (CBIR) scheme. This paper proposes an outsourcing… More >

Stability Control of Gob-Side Entry Retaining in Fully Mechanized Caving Face Based on a Compatible Deformation Model

    Xinshuai Shi1, Hongwen Jing1, *, Jianguo Ning2, Zhenlong Zhao1, Junfu Zhu1

    CMES-Computer Modeling in Engineering & Sciences, Vol.124, No.1, pp. 315-343, 2020, DOI:10.32604/cmes.2020.07955 - 19 June 2020

Abstract The stability control of gob-side entry retaining in fully mechanized caving face is a typical challenge in many coal mines in China. The rotation and subsidence of the lateral cantilever play a critical role in a coal mine, possibly leading to instability in a coal seam wall or a gob-side wall due to its excessive rotation subsidence. Hence, the presplitting blasting measures in the roof was implemented to cut down the lower main roof and convert it to caved immediate roof strata, which can significantly reduce the rotation space for the lateral cantilever and effectively… More >

Abstract The biocomposite films were prepared from poly(L-lactic acid) and cellulose nanocrystals. To improve interfacial compatibility of hydrophilic cellulose nanocrystals with hydrophobic matrix polymer as well as to provide the osteoconductive properties, cellulose was functionalized with poly(glutamic acid). The modified cellulose nanocrystals were better distributed and less aggregated within the matrix, which was testified by scanning electron, optical and polarized light microscopy. According to mechanical tests, composites filled with nanocrystals modified with PGlu demonstrated higher values of Young’s modulus, elongation at break and tensile strength. Mirza Hasanuzzaman1,*, Aditya Banerjee2, M. H. M. Borhannuddin Bhuyan3,4, Aryadeep Roychoudhury2,*, Jubayer Al Mahmud5 and Masayuki Fujita3

    Phyton-International Journal of Experimental Botany, Vol.88, No.3, pp. 185-221, 2019, DOI:10.32604/phyton.2019.07559

Abstract In the era of climate change, abiotic stresses (e.g., salinity, drought, extreme temperature, flooding, metal/metalloid(s), UV radiation, ozone, etc.) are considered as one of the most complex environmental constraints that restricts crop production worldwide. Introduction of stress-tolerant crop cultivars is the most auspicious way of surviving this constraint, and to produce these types of tolerant crops. Several bioengineering mechanisms involved in stress signaling are being adopted in this regard. One example of this kind of manipulation is the osmotic adjustment. The quarternary ammonium compound glycinebetaine (GB), also originally referred to as betaine is a methylated… More >

Biocompatible Blends Based on Poly (Vinyl Alcohol) and Solid Organic Waste

Antonio Greco*, Francesca Ferrari, Raffaella Striani, Carola Esposito Corcione

    Journal of Renewable Materials, Vol.7, No.10, pp. 1023-1035, 2019, DOI:10.32604/jrm.2019.07778

Abstract This work is aimed at the development of new green composite materials through the incorporation of the solid organic waste (SOW) in a thermoplastic matrix. After being ground, the organic waste was exposed to a sterilization process, though an autoclave cycle, in order to obtain a complete removal of the bacterial activity. The SOW was found to have a high amount of water, about 65-70%, which made uneconomical its further treatment to reduce the water amount. Therefore, a water soluble polymer, poly (vinyl alcohol) (PVA) was chosen in order to produce SOW based blends. However,… More >
