Do Child Characteristics Matter to Mitigate the Widowhood Effect on the Elderly’s Mental Health? Evidence from China

Yuxin Wang*, Haoyue Ma, Lan Zheng

    International Journal of Mental Health Promotion, Vol.25, No.5, pp. 673-686, 2023, DOI:10.32604/ijmhp.2023.026394

Abstract This study empirically examines whether child characteristics mitigate the negative impact of widowhood on the elderly’s mental health using follow-up survey data from the China Health and Retirement Longitudinal Study (CHARLS). A total of 5,326 older adults aged 60 years and older are selected from three waves of panel data (2013, 2015, and 2018). The findings suggest that respondents who experienced widowhood exhibit an increase in depressive symptoms. However, the higher income of children and frequent face-to-face emotional interactions improve the mental health of the widowed elderly. Moreover, heterogeneity analyses show that the buffering effect of higher child income is… More >

    Congenital Heart Disease, Vol.18, No.2, pp. 127-150, 2023, DOI:10.32604/chd.2023.025616

Abstract Objectives: To estimate the prevalence of Congenital Heart Disease (CHD) in school-age children, to identify the extent to which altitude affects the prevalence of the disease, and to examine trends in prevalence over time in China. Methods: Seven databases were systematically searched and last retrieved on September 10, 2021 for all studies reporting the prevalence of CHD in children after 1970 in China, which were then divided into high and low altitude regions based on 2500 meters above sea level. The random-effected model was used to combine prevalence data and subgroups analysis. The baseline data of all cases and individuals… More > Graphic Abstract

Regional Finite-Fault Source Model for Development of Ground Motion Attenuation Relationship in Sichuan, China

    Wei Jiang1,2,*, Zelin Cao3,4

    Structural Durability & Health Monitoring, Vol.17, No.1, pp. 37-54, 2023, DOI:10.32604/sdhm.2022.013444

Abstract The attenuation relationship of ground motion based on seismology has always been a front subject of engineering earthquake. Among them, the regional finite-fault source model is very important. In view of this point, the general characteristics of regional seism-tectonics, including the dip and depth of the fault plane, are emphasized. According to the statistics of regional seism-tectonics and focal mechanisms in Sichuan, China, and the sensitivity of estimated peak ground acceleration (PGA) attenuation is analyzed, and the dip angle is taken as an average of 70°. Based the statistics of the upper crustal structure and the focal depth of regional… More >

    Zhendong Wu1, Chen Xu2, Liyan Zhang3, Yang Wang4, George W. Leeson5, Gong Chen4,*, Julien S. Baker6, Xiao-Guang Yue7,8

    International Journal of Mental Health Promotion, Vol.25, No.3, pp. 403-419, 2023, DOI:10.32604/ijmhp.2023.024638

Abstract Introduction:: Older adults are prone to high levels of depression due to their deteriorating physical functions and shrinking social networks after retirement. Volunteering as an important social activity is essential for alleviating depression by building social network. This paper aims to examine the effect of volunteering on depression among older adults by using China Longitudinal Aging Social Survey (CLASS 2018) data.Methods:: This study uses descriptive analysis and chi-square tests to show differences in demographic factors of older adults’ volunteerism participation, followed by bivariate correlation analysis to examine the correlation between the vital variables. Afterward, stratified linear regression analysis is used… More >

    Huaruo Chen1,2, Ya Wen3,*, Fei Liu4,5, Yihong Zhao6, Zhiyao Xie7, Xuehui Zhang4

    International Journal of Mental Health Promotion, Vol.25, No.2, pp. 153-172, 2023, DOI:10.32604/ijmhp.2022.025546

Abstract Career identity is one of the important topics to study the psychological problems of employees, especially after the outbreak of CoV-19. Being a populous country in the world, China has a large number of employees from all walks of life, and its research on career identity has attracted more and more attention. Thus, this study aims to sort out the history, characteristics, and trends of the research on career identity in China through a literature review, which can help more scholars pay attention to China’s career identity research. In this study, Citespace is used to statistically analyze the selected literature… More > Graphic Abstract

Moderating Mechanism in the Relationship between Social Isolation and Mental Health among College Students during High-Risk Period of COVID-19 Transmission in Hubei, China

    Dong Yang1, Chia Ching Tu1, Zhengyan Guo2, Xiao Dai1, Chia Feng Tu3,*

    International Journal of Mental Health Promotion, Vol.25, No.2, pp. 193-206, 2023, DOI:10.32604/ijmhp.2022.022130

Abstract This study explored the effect of perceived social isolation on the mental health of college students during the high-risk period of COVID-19 transmission in Hubei, China and the role of social support from online friends in alleviating this effect. The questionnaire responses of 213 college students from four universities in Hubei were included. Measurement and structural models were constructed using structural equation modeling. The findings revealed that perceived social isolation while under home quarantine was a negative predictor of the mental health of college students in Hubei. Low social support from online friends may lead to a relatively strong relationship… More >

Effect of Rural Sewage Irrigation Regime on Water-Nitrogen Utilization and Crop Growth of Paddy Rice in Southern China

    Menghua Xiao1,*, Yuanyuan Li1,2, Shizong Zheng1

    Phyton-International Journal of Experimental Botany, Vol.92, No.4, pp. 1215-1233, 2023, DOI:10.32604/phyton.2023.025625

    Abstract

Reclaimed water irrigation has become an effective mean to alleviate the contradiction between water availability and its consumption worldwide. In this study, three types of irrigation water sources (rural sewage’s primary treated water R1 and secondary treated water R2, and river water R3) meeting the requirements of water quality for farmland irrigation were selected, and three types of irrigation water levels (low water level W1 of 0–80 mm, medium water level W2 of 0–100 mm, and high water level W3 of 0–150 mm) were adopted to carry out research on the influence mechanismS of different irrigation water sources and water… More >

    Pei Yin1, Jing Cheng2,*

    CMES-Computer Modeling in Engineering & Sciences, Vol.135, No.3, pp. 2387-2405, 2023, DOI:10.32604/cmes.2023.023666

Abstract With the development of the digital city, data and data analysis have become more and more important. The database is the foundation of data analysis. In this paper, the software system of the urban land planning database of Shanghai in China is developed based on MySQL. The conceptual model of the urban land planning database is proposed, and the entities, attributes and connections of this model are discussed. Then the E-R conceptual model is transformed into a logical structure, which is supported by the relational database management system (DBMS). Based on the conceptual and logical structures, by using SpringBoot as… More >

    Jianyi Zhu1, Hui Peng1,2, Xiaoning Lu1,2, Jianxiong Lyu1,2,3, Tianyi Zhan1,2,*

    Journal of Renewable Materials, Vol.11, No.3, pp. 1425-1437, 2023, DOI:10.32604/jrm.2022.023464

Abstract Many tree species are planted in China with variable properties and usage. Toward exploring the structure-properties relationships of wood and classifying the species more reasonably, the physiomechanical properties of the domestic wood species in China were analyzed statistically. According to the correlation analysis, the mechanical properties were closely related to the wood density. Except impact toughness and cleavage strength, the correlation coefficients between mechanical properties and densities were more than 0.8. However, shrinkage properties showed fewer correlations with densities, and the coefficient was no more than 0.7. Primary component analysis was proved to be feasible to explore the information of… More >
