Abstract Soybean agglutinin (SBA) is an important anti-nutritional factor in soybean. SBA can induce animal growth inhibition, cause pathological changes of intestinal tissue, and decrease in the immune system functioning. Recently, a great deal of research has been done on the effects of SBA on cell morphology, division, apoptosis, autophagy, as well as the correlated signal transduction pathway. This review mainly covers the chemical and biological characteristics of SBA, describes the multifaceted aspects of SBA anti-nutritional functions, and highlights the possible cellular and molecular mechanism of anti-nutritional effects of SBA. This review has important implications for the prevention and treatment of… More >

    BIOCELL, Vol.45, No.1, pp. 167-175, 2021, DOI:10.32604/biocell.2021.013636

Abstract Chemotherapy is widely used for non-small cell lung cancer (NSCLC) patients at a late stage; however, NSCLC patients often acquire resistance to chemotherapeutic drugs, thus limiting the therapy efficacy. Melittin, a major component of bee venom, possesses anti-tumor activity in various cancer cells. Here, we examined the effects of melittin on A549/DDP cisplatin-resistant lung adenocarcinoma cells and xenografts formed from this cell line and investigated the possible target of melittin. Treatment with melittin resulted in the induction of cell apoptosis, glycolysis inhibition, and reduction of phosphorylated AKT (p-AKT) in A549/DDP cells. We also identified that tripartite motif-containing 8 (TRIM8) was… More >

Upregulated IRF9 promotes cell apoptosis of hyperlipidemia acute pancreatitis with heart injury by regulating SIRT1

    BIOCELL, Vol.45, No.1, pp. 129-138, 2021, DOI:10.32604/biocell.2021.013275

Abstract Hyperlipidemia acute pancreatitis (HLAP) is a significant cause of AP, characterized by recurrent attacks, more complications and high incidence and mortality. HLAP is often accompanied by single or multiple organ damage. Negative regulation of interferon-regulatory factor 9 (IRF9) on sirtuin-1 (SIRT1) contributes to a range of diseases. However, the function of IRF9 and SIRT1, and the relationship of the two in HLAP with heart injury remain to be illustrated so far. Animal models of HLAP were set up by feeding with high-fat chow and subsequently injecting 20% L-arginine intraperitoneally. The degree of pancreas and heart tissue injury was evaluated. Heart… More >

Pterostilbene induces cell apoptosis and inhibits lipogenesis in SKOV3 ovarian cancer cells by activation of AMPK-induced inhibition of Akt/mTOR signaling cascade

    BIOCELL, Vol.45, No.1, pp. 89-101, 2021, DOI:10.32604/biocell.2021.012516

Abstract This study investigates if the anti-tumor effect of Pterostilbene in the SKOV3 ovarian cancer (OC) cell line involves inhibition of cell metabolism and tested in this effect involves modulating AMPK and Akt-induced regulation of mTORC1. Initially, SKOV3 cells were cultured in the humidified conditions in DMEM media for 24 h with or without increasing concentration of Pterostilbene. Then, the cells were incubated with Pterostilbene (IC50 = 50 µM) under similar conditions with or without pre-incubation with Dorsomorphin, an AMPK inhibitor. In a dose-dependent manner, Pterostilbene inhibited SKOV3 cell survival and increased their lysate levels of lactate dehydrogenase (LDH) and single-stranded… More >

On p21 Tracking Property in Cancer Cell Unravelled Bio-Digitally in silico. Are Apoptosis Principles Universal?

    R. M. Ardito Marretta∗,†, G. Barbaraci

    Molecular & Cellular Biomechanics, Vol.7, No.3, pp. 135-164, 2010, DOI:10.3970/mcb.2010.007.135

Abstract Upon severe DNA damage, p21 acts in a dual mode; on the one hand, it inhibits the cyclin-CDK complex for arresting the G2/M transition and on the other hand, it indirectly becomes an apoptotic factor by activating - in sequence - the retinoblastoma protein, E2F1 and APAF1 expressions. But, in a cancer cells proliferation, the mechanisms of, and participants in, the apoptosis failure remain unclear. Since the p21/p53/Mdm2 proteins network normally involves a digital response in a cancer cell, through an original design of a cell signalling-protein simulator, we demonstrate,in silico, that apoptosis phase instability is fully reciprocated by p21mRNA… More >
