    BIOCELL, Vol.48, No.7, pp. 1071-1079, 2024, DOI:10.32604/biocell.2024.050519

Abstract Introduction: Hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC), a prevalent malignancy, poses significant challenges with high tumor heterogeneity and poor prognosis. MicroRNAs (miRNAs) play a pivotal role in hepatocarcinogenesis. Although abnormalities in microRNA-557 (miR-557) expression have been implicated in various cancer types, its role in HCC remains unclear. Therefore, there is a need to explore the function of microRNA-557 in HCC. Methods: Candidate miRNAs were identified through screening in GSE108724 and GSE20077. Real-time PCR was employed to analyze the expression level of miR-557 in hepatoma cell lines and tissues. Cell viability and migration assays were applied to assess the… More > Graphic Abstract

Long Noncoding RNA LINC0086 Functions as a Tumor Suppressor in Nasopharyngeal Carcinoma by Targeting miR-214

Jie Guo*†, Jinqi Ma, Guosheng Zhao, Guocai Li, Yunfeng Fu, Yanwei Luo, Rong Gui

    Oncology Research, Vol.25, No.7, pp. 1189-1197, 2017, DOI:10.3727/096504017X14865126670075

Abstract Nasopharyngeal carcinoma (NPC) is a distinct head and neck cancer, which is occurring at a high frequency in Southern China. Emerging studies have shown that long noncoding RNAs (lncRNAs) play a critical role in carcinogenesis and progression. In this study, we established a comprehensive lncRNA profile in NPC and found that 35 lncRNAs were differentially expressed in NPC. We found that LINC0086 was decreased in NPC patient serum samples and tissues. The Kaplan–Meier survival curve showed that patients with high LINC0086 expression had a higher survival rate than those with low LINC0086 expression. LINC0086 expression… More >

Abstract Hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC) as one of the most refractory cancers leads to high mortality worldwide. Long noncoding RNAs have been widely acknowledged as important biomarkers and therapeutic targets in HCC. In this study, we investigated the effects of long noncoding RNA FGFR3-AS1 on tumor growth and metastasis in HCC. First, we found that the expression of FGFR3-AS1 was upregulated about threefold in HCC samples and cell lines. We knocked down FGFR3-AS1 in Huh7 and Hep3B cells and found that FGFR3-AS1 knockdown significantly inhibited cell proliferation but induced apoptosis. Moreover, FGFR3-AS1 knockdown led to more HCC More >

Possible therapeutic role of short-chain fatty acids from skin commensal bacteria in UVB-induced skin carcinogenesis

    PAVITHRA SUBRAMANI1,2, RAUNAK KUMAR DAS1,*

    BIOCELL, Vol.47, No.10, pp. 2195-2205, 2023, DOI:10.32604/biocell.2023.030383

Abstract Solar ultraviolet B (UVB) radiation is a major skin cancer-causing agent. Initiation, promotion, and progression are the diverse phases of UVB-induced carcinogenesis. Exposure to UVB causes abnormalities in a series of biochemical and molecular pathways: thymine dimer formation, DNA damage, oxidative stress, inflammatory responses, and altered cell signaling, eventually resulting in tumor formation. The increased skin cancer rates urge researchers to develop more efficient drugs, but synthetic chemotherapeutic drugs have more contrary effects and drug resistance issues, which have been reported recently. The current review focuses on the relationship between microbes and cancer. Human skin… More > Graphic Abstract

Value of Mir-1271 and GPC3 in Prognosis Evaluation of Liver Cancer Patients after Liver Transarterial Chemoembolization

    Xin Chang1,2,#,*, Jin Wang2,#, Caifang Ni1

    Oncologie, Vol.23, No.1, pp. 119-130, 2021, DOI:10.32604/oncologie.2021.014152

Abstract Objective: This research was designed to observe the value of miR-1271 and GPC3 in evaluating the prognosis of liver cancer (LC) patients after liver transarterial chemoembolization (TACE). Methods: A total of 80 patients diagnosed as LC in our hospital from January 2018 to April 2019 were included in the LC group (LCG), and then assigned into a survival group (SG) and a death group (DG) based on prognosis. Seventy healthy subjects undergoing physical examination simultaneously were included in the normal group (NG). miR-1271 and GPC3 in serum of two groups of subjects were tested via qRT-PCR.… More >

PathVisio Analysis: An Application Targeting the miRNA Network Associated with the p53 Signaling Pathway in Osteosarcoma

    MERVIN BURNETT1, VITO RODOLICO2, FAN SHEN1, ROGER LENG1, MINGYONG ZHANG3, DAVID D. EISENSTAT4,5, CONSOLATO SERGI1,3,6,*

    BIOCELL, Vol.45, No.1, pp. 17-26, 2021, DOI:10.32604/biocell.2021.013973

Abstract MicroRNAs (miRNAs) are small single-stranded, non-coding RNA molecules involved in the pathogenesis and progression of cancer, including osteosarcoma. We aimed to clarify the pathways involving miRNAs using new bioinformatics tools. We applied WikiPathways and PathVisio, two open-source platforms, to analyze miRNAs in osteosarcoma using miRTar and ONCO.IO as integration tools. We found 1298 records of osteosarcoma papers associated with the word “miRNA”. In osteosarcoma patients with good response to chemotherapy, miR-92a, miR- 99b, miR-193a-5p, and miR-422a expression is increased, while miR-132 is decreased. All identified miRNAs seem to be centered on the TP53 network. This is the More >
