Abstract Habanero pepper (Capsicum chinense Jacq.) is a crop of economic relevance in the Peninsula of Yucatan. Its fruits have a high level of capsaicinoids compared to peppers grown in other regions of the world, which gives them industrial importance. Soil is an important factor that affects pepper development, nutritional quality, and capsaicinoid content. However, the effect of soil type on fruit development and capsaicinoid metabolism has been little understood. This work aimed to compare the effect of soils with contrasting characteristics, black soil (BS) and red soil (RS), on the expression of genes related to the… More >

Abstract Background: Benign prostatic hyperplasia (BPH) is a common condition in middle-aged and elderly men. Enlargement of the prostate causes lower urinary tract symptoms. Capsaicin is a phytochemical extracted from chili peppers and exerts many pharmacological actions, such as anti-tumor and anti-inflammatory effects. Methods: Our study investigated the effect of capsaicin in vitro and in a mouse model in vivo. A prostatic stromal myofibroblast cell line (WPMY-1) was co-incubated with testosterone (1 µM) and different concentrations of capsaicin (10–100 µM) for 24 and 48 h. Capsaicin (10–100 µM) significantly inhibited testosterone-treated WPMY-1 cell growth at 48 h by MTT… More >

Abstract HPLC analysis of capsaicin and dihydrocapsaicine concentrations obtained from fruits of Capsicum annuum var. glabrisculum, collected from four localities in the state of Tamaulipas, Mexico, was investigated. Selection of localities for this study was carried out considering that 65% of the people living in them gather wild chilli pepper for either autoconsumption or commercial purposes. An ANOVA analysis was carried out for determining capsaicinoids composition variation. Also, a multivariate analysis was carried out using Pearson correlation and principal components analysis to elucidate the influence that environmental factors might have on capsaicinoids concentration. Fruits from the locality El… More >

    Valadez Sánchez YM1, E Olivares Sáenz1, RE Vázquez Alvarado1, JR Esparza-Rivera3, P Preciado-Rangel4, RD Valdez-Cepeda5, JL García-Hernandez2

    Phyton-International Journal of Experimental Botany, Vol.85, pp. 21-26, 2016, DOI:10.32604/phyton.2016.85.021

Abstract The aim of this study was to evaluate the effect of three organic fertilization sources on the agronomic and biochemical qualities of four genotypes of Serrano pepper. The experiment was performed at the field in Gómez Palacio, Durango (México). The capsaicinoids (CAP´s) are compounds responsible of the pungency of the peppers, and they are valuable for health and food and cosmetic food. The organic treatments applied were: solarized bovine manure (60 Mg/ha), vermicompost (10 Mg/ha) and poultry manure (5 Mg/ ha). A non-fertilized treatment was used as control. The evaluated variables were: length, diameter and… More >
