Applications of Microalgae in Five Areas of Biotechnology

Héctor Alejandro Reza-Solis1, Ofelia Adriana Hernández-Rodríguez1,*, Andrés Francisco Martínez-Rosales2, Dámaris Leopoldina Ojeda-Barrios1

    Phyton-International Journal of Experimental Botany, Vol.92, No.10, pp. 2737-2759, 2023, DOI:10.32604/phyton.2023.029851 - 15 September 2023

Abstract Microalgae are mostly photoautotrophic microscopic organisms. According to their cellular structure, they are classified into two types, eukaryotes, and prokaryotes, and they are distributed in all types of ecosystems, presenting unique qualities due to the fact that they synthesize high value-added molecules used in various productive and environmental activities, and because their biomass is used as raw material to obtain various products. Therefore, the objective of this review was to collect, organize, and collate current information on the use of microalgae in the development of biotechnology involving the areas of agriculture, health, food, bioremediation, and More >

In vitro Mutagenesis for the Improvement of Agave Genus

Sugey Vásquez-Hernández, Joaquín Adolfo Montes-Molina*, Federico Antonio Gutiérrez-Miceli, Sheila Jazmín Reyes-Zambrano, Carlos Alberto Lecona-Guzmán*

    Phyton-International Journal of Experimental Botany, Vol.92, No.7, pp. 2065-2078, 2023, DOI:10.32604/phyton.2023.028784 - 29 May 2023

Abstract Biotechnological techniques provide a viable alternative to help improve and increase the production of plant species of agricultural and economic importance, which have been affected over the years by climate change, increasing their susceptibility to pests and/or diseases, generating losses in production as well as a decrease in their regenerative and genetic diversity. The application of biotechnological techniques such as in vitro mutagenesis offers a viable option for the generation of crops that are resistant to the different factors caused by abiotic and biotic stress. In vitro mutagenesis has been used in an efficient way to generate… More >

Conventional Breeding and Molecular Markers for Blast Disease Resistance in Rice (Oryza sativa L.)

    Adel A. Rezk1,2, Mohamed M. El-Malky3, Hossam S. El-Beltagi1,4,*, Mohammed Al-daej1, Kotb A. Attia5,6

    Phyton-International Journal of Experimental Botany, Vol.92, No.3, pp. 725-746, 2023, DOI:10.32604/phyton.2022.024645 - 29 November 2022

Abstract Monogenic lines, which carried 23 genes for blast resistance were tested and used donors to transfer resistance genes by crossing method. The results under blast nursery revealed that 9 genes from 23 genes were susceptible to highly susceptible under the three locations (Sakha, Gemmeza, and Zarzoura in Egypt); Pia, Pik, Pik-p, Piz-t, Pita, Pi b, Pi, Pi 19 and Pi 20. While, the genes Pii, Pik-s, Pik-h, Pi z, Piz-5, Pi sh, Pi 3, Pi 1, Pi 5, Pi 7, Pi 9, Pi 12, Pikm and Pita-2 were highly resistant at the same locations. Clustering analysis confirmed the results, which divided into two groups; the first one included all the susceptible genes,… More >

Green Synthesis of Silver Nanoparticles Using Annona diversifolia Leaf Extract and Their Antimicrobial Application

    Rogelio Solorzano-Toala1, Daniel Gonzalez-Mendoza2,*, Benjamin Valdez-Salas3, Vianey MendezTrujillo4, Federico Gutierrez-Miceli1, Ernesto Beltran-Partida3, Olivia Tzintzun-Camacho2

    Journal of Renewable Materials, Vol.8, No.9, pp. 1129-1137, 2020, DOI:10.32604/jrm.2020.09845 - 03 August 2020

Abstract The aim of this study was the synthesis of silver nanoparticle using Annona diversifolia Safford. The silver nanoparticles obtained were analyzed by spectroscopic methods and dynamic light scattering methods. The inhibition of AgNPs was evaluated against Bacillus cereus, Klebsiella pneumoniae and Enterobacter aerogenes. The results showed that AgNPs have high values at 3 keV and particle size between 45 to 58 nm with a homogenous morphology. The AgNPs showed growth inhibition against Klebsiella pneumoniae and Enterobacter aerogenes. Therefore studies are needed to confirm the potential antimicrobial of different AgNP from A. diversifolia in Gram negative and Gram positive bacteria. More >

    Iqbal A1, MA Iqbal1, A Iqbal1, Z Aslam1, M Maqsood1, Z Ahmad2, N Akbar1, HZ Khan1, RN Abbas1, RD Khan1, G Abbas1, M Faisal1

    Phyton-International Journal of Experimental Botany, Vol.86, pp. 84-88, 2017, DOI:10.32604/phyton.2017.86.084

Abstract Seed inoculation with bacterial species has the potential to increase yield and agro-qualitative attributes of forage crops. This study determined the response of forage maize to three plant growth promoting rhizobacteria [PGPR1 (Azotobacter chroococcum), PGPR2 (Pseudomonas flourescens) and PGPR3 (Bacillus megaterium)] inoculated individually and in different combinations (PGPR1+2, PGPR1+3, PGPR2+3 and PGPR1+2+3). A non-inoculated treatment was kept as a control. We used a completely randomized block design with four replicates. The PGPR1+2+3 treatment showed an outstanding performance by improving yield attributes, green forage yield, dry matter biomass, crude protein and total ash. The same treatment gave the lowest More >

Microbial diversity, metagenomics and the Yucatán aquifer

    Rojas-Herrera R1, M Zamudio-Maya1, L Arena-Ortiz2, RC Pless3, A O’Connor-Sánchez4

    Phyton-International Journal of Experimental Botany, Vol.80, pp. 231-240, 2011, DOI:10.32604/phyton.2011.80.231

Abstract Mexico counts among the five countries with the highest biodiversity in the world. In the Yucatán Peninsula, there are aquatic ecosystems with a very special microbial diversity. These ecosystems are essential for the ecological equilibrium of the region, and are seriously threatened by human activities. Access and knowledge of the microbial resources of these environments have an enormous scientific interest, and could potentially result in biotechnological products which could lead to more efficient and environmentally friendly processes; it could also offer a full arsenal of microorganisms and/or novel molecules to the local and world industry… More >

Cancer Cell(s) Cycle Sequencing Reveals Universal Mechanisms of Apoptosis

    R. M. Ardito Marretta*, F. Ales

    Molecular & Cellular Biomechanics, Vol.7, No.4, pp. 225-266, 2010, DOI:10.3970/mcb.2010.007.225

Abstract In this paper, cell cycle in higher eukaryotes and their molecular networks signals both inG1/SandG2/Mtransitions are replicatedin silico. Biochemical kinetics, converted into a set of differential equations, and system control theory are employed to design multi-nested digital layers to simulate protein-to-protein activation and inhibition for cell cycle dynamics in the presence of damaged genomes. Sequencing and controlling the digital process of four micro-scale species networks (p53/Mdm2/DNA damage, p21mRNA/cyclin-CDK complex, CDK/CDC25/wee1/ SKP2/APC/CKI and apoptosis target genes system) not only allows the comprehension of the mechanisms of these molecule interactions but paves the way for unraveling the… More >
