    Punam Gulande*, R. N. Awale

    Computer Systems Science and Engineering, Vol.48, No.4, pp. 937-952, 2024, DOI:10.32604/csse.2024.046123

Abstract The study of gene expression has emerged as a vital tool for cancer diagnosis and prognosis, particularly with the advent of microarray technology that enables the measurement of thousands of genes in a single sample. While this wealth of data offers invaluable insights for disease management, the high dimensionality poses a challenge for multiclass classification. In this context, selecting relevant features becomes essential to enhance classification model performance. Swarm Intelligence algorithms have proven effective in addressing this challenge, owing to their ability to navigate intricate, non-linear feature-class relationships. This paper introduces a novel hybrid swarm More >

Abstract Triple-negative breast cancer (TNBC) is associated with high recurrence rates of metastasis and death. miR-509 has been reported to be a tumor suppressor in many cancers, but its effect in TNBC has not yet been identified. In this article, we explored the effects of miR-509 on the malignant phenotype of TNBC cells, including proliferation, apoptosis, migration, and invasion. We transiently transfected TNBC cells, Hs578T, with miR-509 mimic. Upon transfection, the expression of miR-509 was upregulated about 50-fold compared with cells transfected with scramble mimic. Overexpression of miR-509 inhibited cell proliferation, induced cell apoptosis, and suppressed More >

    Oncology Research, Vol.25, No.9, pp. 1567-1578, 2017, DOI:10.3727/096504017X14897173032733

Abstract Capecitabine has consistently demonstrated high efficacy and acceptable tolerability in salvage chemotherapy for advanced breast cancer. However, there remains no consensus on its role in adjuvant chemotherapy for early breast cancer (EBC). To estimate the value of capecitabine-based combination adjuvant treatment in EBC, eight randomized controlled trials with 14,072 participants were analyzed. The efficacy and safety outcomes included disease-free survival (DFS), overall survival (OS), relapse, breast cancer-specific survival (BCSS), and grades 3–5 adverse events. Capecitabine-based combination adjuvant chemotherapy demonstrated a 16% increase in BCSS (HR = 0.84, 95% CI = 0.71–0.98, p = 0.03) in the… More >

    Oncology Research, Vol.25, No.4, pp. 587-593, 2017, DOI:10.3727/096504016X14761811155298

Abstract Protein disulfide isomerases A6 (PDIA6) belongs to the PDI family. Recently, PDIA6 was found to have a close association with various cancers. However, there has been little investigation into the biological functions of PDIA6 in bladder cancer (BC). In this study, we explored the expression pattern and functional significance of PDIA6 in BC. We found that PDIA6 was overexpressed in BC tissues and cell lines. The in vitro study showed that PDIA6 downregulation significantly inhibited BC proliferation and invasion. In addition, the in vivo experiment demonstrated that PDIA6 downregulation decreased the volume, weight, and metastasis More >

Changlin Wang*, Bin Zhou, Min Liu*, Ying Liu*, Rui Gao*

    Oncology Research, Vol.25, No.4, pp. 463-470, 2017, DOI:10.3727/096504016X14685034103879

Abstract Cervical cancer is one of the most common cancers in females, with a high incidence and mortality around the world. However, the pathogenesis in cervical cancer is not completely known. In the present study, we investigated the role of miR-126-5p and Bcl2l2 in cervical cancer cells. First, miR-126-5p expression was aberrantly downregulated in human cervical cancer tumor tissues in comparison with normal tissues, as evaluated by RT-PCR. Consistently, the levels of miR-126-5p were also significantly reduced in cervical cancer cell lines when compared to normal cervical epithelial cells. Flow cytometric analysis showed that the rate… More >

Abstract ABCB5 belongs to the ATP-binding cassette (ABC) superfamily, which is recognized for playing a role in the failure of chemotherapy. ABCB5 has also been found to be overexpressed at the transcriptional level in a number of cancer subtypes, including breast cancer. However, the exact mechanism ABCB5 uses on cancer cell metastasis is still unclear. In the present study, we demonstrate that ABCB5 expression was increased in metastatic tissues when compared with nonmetastatic tissues. ABCB5 can significantly enhance metastasis and epithelial–mesenchymal transition (EMT), while knockdown of ABCB5 inhibited these processes. Microarray analysis indicated that ZEB1 may More >

MicroRNA-377 Downregulates Bcl-xL and Increases Apoptosis in Hepatocellular Carcinoma Cells

Hongyan Ge*, Di Zou, Yingshu Wang*, Hao Jiang*, Liping Wang

    Oncology Research, Vol.25, No.1, pp. 29-34, 2017, DOI:10.3727/096504016X14719078133168

Abstract Aberrantly expressed microRNAs (miRNAs/miRs) and their role in cancer development have recently gained more attention. However, the potential role of miRNAs in hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC) remains largely unknown. In this study, we demonstrated that miR-377 was markedly downregulated in HCC cell lines and primary human HCC tissues. The decreased expression of miR-377 contributes to the upregulation of Bcl-xL expression by targeting its 3'-untranslated region (3'-UTR). Functionally, knockdown of miR-377 noticeably increased HCC cell growth and colony formation and inhibited apoptosis. In contrast, overexpression of miR-377 suppressed cell proliferation and increased apoptosis. This study provides new More >

Peng Guo*, Guohui Zhang*†, Jialin Meng, Qian He*, Zhihui Li, Yawei Guan

    Oncology Research, Vol.26, No.7, pp. 1083-1091, 2018, DOI:10.3727/096504018X15152085755247

Abstract Bladder cancer (BC) is one of the leading causes of cancer-related deaths in the world. Long noncoding RNA (lncRNA) taurine-upregulated gene 1 (TUG1) plays an important role in the development and progression of numerous cancers, including BC. However, the exact role of TUG1 in modulating BC progression is still poorly known. In this study, we found that TUG1 was upregulated and microRNA-29c (miR-29c) was downregulated in BC tissues and cell lines. Overexpression of TUG1 promoted the cell proliferation of T24 and EJ cells, whereas TUG1 knockdown had the opposite effect. Upregulation of TUG1 obviously facilitated… More >
