Thermal Properties Reconstruction and Temperature Fields in Asphalt Pavements: Inverse Problem and Optimisation Algorithms

    Zhonghai Jiang1, Qian Wang1, Liangbing Zhou2,*, Chun Xiao3

    FDMP-Fluid Dynamics & Materials Processing, Vol.19, No.6, pp. 1693-1708, 2023, DOI:10.32604/fdmp.2023.025270 - 30 January 2023

Abstract A two-layer implicit difference scheme is employed in the present study to determine the temperature distribution in an asphalt pavement. The calculation of each layer only needs four iterations to achieve convergence. Furthermore, in order to improve the calculation accuracy a swarm intelligence optimization algorithm is also exploited to inversely analyze the laws by which the thermal physical parameters of the asphalt pavement materials change with temperature. Using the basic cuckoo and the gray wolf algorithms, an adaptive hybrid optimization algorithm is obtained and used to determine the relationship between the thermal diffusivity of two More >

Sustainable Asphalt Concrete Containing RAP and Coal Gangue Aggregate: Performance, Costs, and Environmental Impact

    Yuquan Yao1, Jie Gao2,3, Jiangang Yang2,3,*, Bocheng Huang4, Liang Song5

    Journal of Renewable Materials, Vol.10, No.8, pp. 2263-2285, 2022, DOI:10.32604/jrm.2022.018911 - 25 April 2022

Abstract The shortage of natural aggregates is becoming a severe problem in the pavement industry globally. To address this issue, in this study, an effort was made to use reclaimed asphalt pavement (RAP) and coal gangue (CG) as coarse and fine aggregate, respectively for producing the hot mix asphalt (HMA). As the replacement of natural aggregate, there were seven types of HMA containing 20% and 40% RAP coarse aggregate content, and 10% and 25% CG fine aggregate content were designed and prepared. In addition, Marshall Stability test, rutting resistance test, immersion Marshall test, freezing-thaw splitting test,… More > Graphic Abstract

Discrete Element Simulation of Asphalt Pavement Milling Process to Improve the Utilization of Milled Old Mixture

Jianmin Wu*, Bingbing Zhang, Chunsheng Wu, Zhiqiang Shu, Shaoqing Li, Jianqi Yang

    Journal of Renewable Materials, Vol.9, No.5, pp. 993-1011, 2021, DOI:10.32604/jrm.2021.014304 - 20 February 2021

Abstract In order to improve the utilization of milling materials, save stone resources and reduce milling energy consumption, the aged Styrene-butadiene-styrene (SBS) modified asphalt was used as a binder to prepare AC-16 asphalt mixture to simulate old asphalt pavement materials. First, the test and discrete element simulation results of uniaxial compression tests were used to calibrate the parameters of the parallel bonding contact model between asphalt mortar and aggregates. On this basis, a microscopic model of the asphalt mixture was established to simulate the old asphalt pavement. Then, the discrete element software PFC (Particle Flow Code)… More >
