Parasitic Infections and Carcinogenesis: Molecular Mechanisms, Immune Modulation, and Emerging Therapeutic Strategies

    Marta Pawłowska1,*, Dorian Jarek2, Jan Milanowski2, Karolina Szewczyk-Golec1

    Oncology Research, Vol.34, No.2, 2026, DOI:10.32604/or.2025.071891 - 19 January 2026

Abstract Parasitic infections are increasingly recognized as contributors to cancer development, yet the underlying oncogenic mechanisms remain insufficiently understood. Growing evidence from molecular oncology, immunology, and microbiome research suggests that chronic parasitic infections may drive tumorigenesis through sustained inflammation, deregulated signaling pathways, genomic instability, and the release of parasite-derived exosomes that reshape the tumor microenvironment. These insights underscore the need to integrate parasitology with cancer biology to understand infection-associated malignancies better. The aim of this narrative review is to synthesize current knowledge on how selected parasites contribute to cancer development and to highlight emerging therapeutic and… More > Graphic Abstract

    BIOCELL, Vol.49, No.9, pp. 1605-1629, 2025, DOI:10.32604/biocell.2025.065474 - 25 September 2025

Abstract Extracellular vesicles (EVs) have arisen as potential therapeutic tools in managing infectious diseases because EVs can regulate cell-to-cell signaling, function as drug transport mechanisms, and influence immune reactions. They are obtained from a myriad of sources, such as plants, humans, and animal cells. EVs like exosomes and ectosomes can be utilized in their native form as therapeutics or engineered to encompass antimicrobials, vaccines, and oligonucleotides of interest with a targeted delivery strategy. An in-depth understanding of host-pathogen dynamics provides a solid foundation for exploiting its full potential in therapeutics against infectious diseases. This review mainly More >

    Magdy Nagy*

    CMES-Computer Modeling in Engineering & Sciences, Vol.143, No.1, pp. 185-223, 2025, DOI:10.32604/cmes.2025.061865 - 11 April 2025

Abstract In this present work, we propose the expected Bayesian and hierarchical Bayesian approaches to estimate the shape parameter and hazard rate under a generalized progressive hybrid censoring scheme for the Kumaraswamy distribution. These estimates have been obtained using gamma priors based on various loss functions such as squared error, entropy, weighted balance, and minimum expected loss functions. An investigation is carried out using Monte Carlo simulation to evaluate the effectiveness of the suggested estimators. The simulation provides a quantitative assessment of the estimates accuracy and efficiency under various conditions by comparing them in terms of More >

    JULIANA A. PORTES1, ROSSIANE C. VOMMARO1, LUCIO AYRES CALDAS2, ERICA S. MARTINS-DUARTE3,*

    BIOCELL, Vol.47, No.4, pp. 929-950, 2023, DOI:10.32604/biocell.2023.026629 - 08 March 2023

Abstract Toxoplasma gondii is a protozoan of worldwide distribution and the agent of toxoplasmosis. It is estimated that 30%–50% of the world population could be infected with this parasite. Although the infection in immunocompetent individuals is mostly asymptomatic, the disease in immunosuppressed and pregnant is a risk condition. As a member of the phylum Apicomplexa, T. gondii has an obligatory intracellular lifestyle; therefore, invading a host cell and establishing it inside a parasitophorous vacuole (PV) are mandatories for the survival of this parasite. The construction of a perfect intracellular niche for T. gondii requires the secretion of an arsenal More >
