Mechanical Properties and Failure Modes of 3D-Printed Continuous Fiber-Reinforced Single-Bolt Composite Joints with Curved Paths and Variable Hatch Spaces

    Xin Zhang1,2, Xitao Zheng1,2, Tiantian Yang3, Mingyu Song1,2, Yuanyuan Tian4, Leilei Yan1,2,*

The International Conference on Computational & Experimental Engineering and Sciences, Vol.30, No.3, pp. 1-1, 2024, DOI:10.32604/icces.2024.011277

Abstract Composite joints are widely used in machinery industries such as aviation, aerospace, and marine, where they transfer main loads as lightweight connectors. Recently, 3D printing with continuous fibers has relieved the required molds in composite manufacturing process and given flexibility to the design of robust composite joints. However, how the curved paths and variable hatch spaces affect the mechanical properties and failure modes of 3D-printed single-bolt composite joints with continuous fibers remains undisclosed. In this study, 3D printing has been introduced to fabricate three types of continuous fiber-reinforced single-bolt composite joints with different paths, including… More >

Low-molecular-weight fucoidan inhibits the proliferation of melanoma via Bcl-2 phosphorylation and PTEN/AKT pathway

    MINJI PARK1, CHULHWAN BANG2, WON-SOO YUN3, YUN-MI JEONG3,*

    Oncology Research, Vol.32, No.2, pp. 273-282, 2024, DOI:10.32604/or.2023.044362 - 28 December 2023

Abstract Fucoidan, a sulfate polysaccharide obtained from brown seaweed, has various bioactive properties, including anti-inflammatory, anti-cancer, anti-viral, anti-oxidant, anti-coagulant, anti-thrombotic, anti-angiogenic, and anti-Helicobacter pylori properties. However, the effects of low-molecular-weight fucoidan (LMW-F) on melanoma cell lines and three dimensional (3D) cell culture models are not well understood. This study aimed to investigate the effects of LMW-F on A375 human melanoma cells and cryopreserved biospecimens derived from patients with advanced melanoma. Ultrasonic wave was used to fragment fucoidan derived from Fucus vesiculosus into smaller LMW-F. MTT and live/dead assays showed that LMW-F inhibited cell proliferation in both A375 cells More >

Effect of the Wick Deflection Angles on Heat Transfer Characteristics for the Flat LHP

    Zhuohuan Hu1, Sixian Sun1, Chengwei Yuan1, Yan Cao2, Jiayin Xu1,*

    Frontiers in Heat and Mass Transfer, Vol.21, pp. 107-123, 2023, DOI:10.32604/fhmt.2023.041837 - 30 November 2023

Abstract Loop Heat Pipe (LHP) is an efficient two-phase heat transfer device, which can be used in waste heat recovery, electronics cooling, aerospace and other fields. The wick, the core component of LHP, plays an important role in its start-up and operation. In this paper, the wick fabricated by 3D printing technology had uniform and interconnected pores. In the experiment, the position of the parallel vapor removal grooves was always fixed towards the vapor outlet. When the cylindrical wick was placed in the evaporator, the rotation angle relative to its central axis could be changed, thus… More > Graphic Abstract

The Effect of Printing Parameters and Wood Surface Preparation on the Adhesion of Directly 3D-Printed PLA on Wood

Daša Krapež Tomec, Angela Balzano, Jure Žigon, Milan Šernek, Mirko Kariž*

    Journal of Renewable Materials, Vol.10, No.7, pp. 1787-1796, 2022, DOI:10.32604/jrm.2022.019760 - 07 March 2022

Abstract As additive manufacturing technologies advance, new opportunities are opening up for their application in the furniture industry. Wood remains one of the leading raw materials in the furniture industry; therefore, possible options for combining it with 3D printing have been researched. The bonding of 3D-printed polymer parts with wood or 3D printing with wood-plastic composites is already known, but in our research we attempted to directly 3D print polylactic acid (PLA) on wood surfaces. The effect of printing parameters, as well as the surface preparation of wood on the shear strength of the bond between… More >

Effects of Selected Printing Parameters on the Fire Properties of 3D-Printed Neat Polylactic Acid (PLA) and Wood/PLA Composites

    Nataša Knez1, Mirko Kariž2, Friderik Knez1, Nadir Ayrilmis3,*, Manja Kitek Kuzman2,*

    Journal of Renewable Materials, Vol.9, No.11, pp. 1883-1895, 2021, DOI:10.32604/jrm.2021.016128 - 04 June 2021

Abstract The effects of selected printing parameters on the fire properties of additively produced composites from neat polylactic acid (PLA) and wood/PLA filaments were investigated. The reaction to fire of the 3D-printed specimens was tested according to the ISO 5660-1 cone calorimeter test method. The results showed that the properties of the specimens when exposed to fire were significantly affected by the incorporation of wood flour into the PLA filament. It was also interesting that PLA specimens had much better reactions to fire than the wood/PLA specimens. Time to ignition was found to be much longer More >

3D-Printed PLA Filaments Reinforced with Nanofibrillated Cellulose

    Matea Perić1,*, Robert Putz1, Christian Paulik2

    Journal of Renewable Materials, Vol.8, No.7, pp. 759-772, 2020, DOI:10.32604/jrm.2020.09284 - 01 June 2020

Abstract In the current study poly(lactic acid) PLA composites with a 3 wt% and 5 wt% of nanofibrillated cellulose (NFC) were produced by 3D-printing method. An enzymatic pretreatment coupled with mechanical fibrillation in a twin screw extruder was used to produce high consistency NFC. Scanning electron microscopy (SEM) equipped with Fibermetric software, FASEP fiber length distribution analysis, Furrier transform infrared spectroscopy (FT-IR), thermogravimetric analysis (TGA), tensile tests, impact tests and differential scanning calorimetry were used to characterize NFC and PLA/NFC composites. The results of the fiber length and width measurements together with the results of the… More >
