Advances in Grapevine Breeding: Integrating Traditional Selection, Genomic Tools, and Gene Editing Technologies

    Sandra Pérez-Álvarez1,*, Eduardo Fidel Héctor-Ardisana2, Eduardo Sandoval Castro3, Erick H. Ochoa-Chaparro4, Luisa Patricia Uranga-Valencia1

    Phyton-International Journal of Experimental Botany, Vol.94, No.12, pp. 3749-3803, 2025, DOI:10.32604/phyton.2025.072135 - 29 December 2025

Abstract Grape (Vitis vinifera L.) cultivation has progressed from early domestication and clonal propagation to modern, data-driven breeding that is reshaping viticulture and wine quality. Yet climatic and biotic constraints still impose heavy losses—downy mildew can reduce yields by ≈75% in humid regions and gray mold by 20–50%—sustaining the need for resistant cultivars. Producer selection, interspecific crossing, and formal improvement programs have generated ~10,000 varieties, although only a few dozen dominate global acreage. Conventional breeding has delivered fungus-resistant “PIWI” cultivars that retain ≥85% of the V. vinifera genome; in Austria, national PIWI varieties are gaining acceptance for combined… More >

    Sena Yıldız1, Nurhan Keskin2,*, Birhan Kunter3, Harlene Hatterman-Valenti4, Ozkan Kaya4,5,*

    Phyton-International Journal of Experimental Botany, Vol.94, No.11, pp. 3471-3492, 2025, DOI:10.32604/phyton.2025.073180 - 01 December 2025

Abstract Climate change-driven environmental stresses, particularly ultraviolet-B (UV-B) radiation, pose severe threats to grapevine (Vitis vinifera L.) productivity and physiological stability. This study investigated the protective role of melatonin in in vitro plantlets of two grapevine cultivars, ‘Merlot’ and ‘Erciş’, subjected to low (≈8.25 μW cm−2, 16 h) and high (≈33 μW cm−2, 4 h) UV-B exposure. Significant cultivar-specific responses were observed (p < 0.001). The ‘Erciş’ cultivar exhibited higher oxidative stress, with malondialdehyde (MDA) levels reaching 24.30 mmol g−1 FW in control plants compared with 14.91 ± 0.25 mmol g−1 FW in ‘Merlot’. Melatonin provided dose-dependent mitigation, reducing MDA to… More >

    Raquel Hidalgo-Sanz, María-Ángeles Del-Castillo-Alonso, Laura Monforte, Rafael Tomás-Las-Heras, Encarnación Núñez-Olivera, Javier Martínez-Abaigar*

    Phyton-International Journal of Experimental Botany, Vol.94, No.11, pp. 3453-3470, 2025, DOI:10.32604/phyton.2025.070087 - 01 December 2025

Abstract Grapevine (Vitis vinifera L.) is one of the main crops worldwide, and ultraviolet-B (UV-B, 280–315 nm) radiation is emerging as a promising technical tool to enhance secondary metabolites that can contribute to the quality and health-promoting properties of both grapes and the resulting wines. However, few studies have assessed the effectiveness of UV-B supplements under field conditions. Here, we compared the effects of two different field UV-B treatments (a single supplement applied at pre-harvest, and a double supplement applied at both veraison and pre-harvest) on the phenolic composition of Tempranillo grape skins and the resulting wines.… More >

    Pamela Lippi1, Aleš Eichmeier2, Sergio Puccioni3, Giovan Battista Mattii1, Eleonora Cataldo1,*

    Phyton-International Journal of Experimental Botany, Vol.94, No.4, pp. 1047-1072, 2025, DOI:10.32604/phyton.2025.064272 - 30 April 2025

Abstract The search for environmentally friendly approaches in viticulture is increasing, driven by the need to minimize the ecological footprint of conventional methods while ensuring high grape quality and stable yields. Among the various alternatives explored, essential oils (EOs) have drawn attention due to their natural origin and bioactive properties, including antimicrobial, antifungal, and insect-repellent effects. They are characterized by numerous utilisations, from managing diseases and pests in vineyards to post-harvest applications to preserve and prolong storage duration. This innovative review examines, for the first time, the topic of EOs on viticulture, embracing their multiple uses… More >

    Yue Wang1,#, Xiujie Li2,#, Yusen Wu2, Zhonghui Cai1, Bo Li2, Zhaosen Xie1,*

    Phyton-International Journal of Experimental Botany, Vol.92, No.6, pp. 1859-1871, 2023, DOI:10.32604/phyton.2023.027067 - 11 April 2023

Abstract It is generally agreed that many Vitis vinifera L. cultivars are self-fertile, where self-pollination often occurs before capfall in a process called cleistogamy. Therefore, it is difficult to identify the right time to remove stamens before self-pollination during the cross-breeding of grape. For this paper, we observed the process of grape flowering and measured the pollen viability and stigma receptivity of grape flowers of ‘Shine Muscat’ in order to identify the starting time of self-pollination before capfall and to provide useful information for improving the efficiency of cross-breeding. The results demonstrate that the anther is not… More >

Genome-Wide Identification and Expression Profiling of the Shaker K+ Channel and HAK/KUP/KT Transporter Gene Families in Grape (Vitis vinifera L.)

    Han Lei1,#, Junlin Li2,#, Zhizhong Song1,3,*

    Phyton-International Journal of Experimental Botany, Vol.91, No.11, pp. 2519-2536, 2022, DOI:10.32604/phyton.2022.021268 - 12 July 2022

Abstract Potassium (K+) is an essential macronutrient for plants to maintain normal growth and development. Shaker-like K+ channels and HAK/KUP/KT transporters are critical components in the K+ acquisition and translocation. In this study, we identified 9 Shaker-like K+ channel (VvK) and 18 HAK/KUP/KT transporter (VvKUP) genes in grape, which were renamed according to their distributions in the genome and relative linear orders among the distinct chromosomes. Similar structure organizations were found within each group according to the exon/intron structure and protein motif analysis. Chromosomal distribution analysis showed that 9 VvK genes and 18 VvKUP genes were unevenly distributed on 7… More >

Phylogenetic analysis and target gene prediction of miR477 gene family in grape

    HUI-YING JIN1,2, MAO-SONG PEI1,2, DA-LONG GUO1,2,*

    BIOCELL, Vol.46, No.4, pp. 941-949, 2022, DOI:10.32604/biocell.2022.016718 - 15 December 2021

Abstract To understand the molecular characteristics of the miR477 gene family of grape (Vvi-miR477) and to predict its target genes, the Vvi-miR477 genes were identified from previous small RNA sequencing data, then phylogenetic analysis and prediction of target gene were conducted. The Vvi-miR477 family consists of two precursor sequences and three mature sequences. The miR477 family members were mostly 19-22nt in length. The sequence is relatively conservative. Vvi-MIR477a and Vvi-MIR477b are located on chromosomes 1 and 2, respectively. These precursor sequences can form the typical stable stem-loop structure. Their minimum folding free energy is −39.10 kcal/mol and −50.90 kcal/mol, More >
