Abstract Habanero pepper (Capsicum chinense Jacq.) is a crop of economic relevance in the Peninsula of Yucatan. Its fruits have a high level of capsaicinoids compared to peppers grown in other regions of the world, which gives them industrial importance. Soil is an important factor that affects pepper development, nutritional quality, and capsaicinoid content. However, the effect of soil type on fruit development and capsaicinoid metabolism has been little understood. This work aimed to compare the effect of soils with contrasting characteristics, black soil (BS) and red soil (RS), on the expression of genes related to the… More >

    Journal of Renewable Materials, Vol.11, No.11, pp. 3933-3943, 2023, DOI:10.32604/jrm.2023.031129 - 31 October 2023

Abstract This work was carried out to evaluate the insecticidal effect of mono, bi and trimetallic nanoparticles (NPs) from leaf extract of habanero pepper (Capsicum chinense Jacq.) on the red flour beetle (Tribolium castaneum herbst.) and cotton mealybug (Phenacoccus solenopsis Tinsley). The results showed that Cu NPs, Cu/Mn NPs and Zn/Cu NPs had high insecticidal effect against T. castaneum (63%–80% mortality after 96 h). The Cu NPs and Zn/Cu NPs showed also insecticidal effect against P. solenopsis, but to a lesser extent (20%–28% after 96 h). With regards to the physicochemical characterization, Cu NPs had a zeta potential of 21.1 More > Graphic Abstract

Phenotypic Variation among and within Three Peppers Species (Capsicum) from Mexico

    Carlos Eduardo Ornelas-Ramírez1, Sergio Hernández-Verdugo1,*, Jesús Enrique Retes-Manjarrez1, Angel Valdez-Ortiz2, Antonio Pacheco-Olvera1, Tomás Osuna-Enciso3, Flor Porras1

    Phyton-International Journal of Experimental Botany, Vol.90, No.1, pp. 259-275, 2021, DOI:10.32604/phyton.2020.012476 - 20 November 2020

Abstract The phenotypic variation and its distribution among species, morphotypes, and among and within populations was estimated in 71 populations pertaining to 15 morphotypes of three domesticated species of Capsicum from Mexico. Collections were made in the states of Sinaloa, Nayarit, Oaxaca, Tabasco, and Yucatán in two agroecosystems: Backyard-garden and monoculture. Fifteen phenotypic characteristics were analyzed through one-way variance analysis and multivariate analyses of principal components analysis (PCA) and hierarchical clustering using Ward’s method. The study was performed in a uniform greenhouse experiment. A high variation was found among and within populations in all the measured characteristics.… More >

Protocol for the reduction of costs in habanero chili (Capsicum chinense Jacq.) micropropagation

    Jimarez-Montiel MJ1, A Robledo-Paz1, VM Ordaz-Chaparro2, LI Trejo-Tellez2, JC Molina-Moreno1

    Phyton-International Journal of Experimental Botany, Vol.87, pp. 94-104, 2018, DOI:10.32604/phyton.2018.87.094

Abstract An alternative method for improving the production of habanero chili is the tissue culture technique; however, the gelling agent, the high salt and sucrose concentrations used in the culture media raise production costs and limit the adaptation of the regenerated plants to greenhouse or field conditions. In this study, the effect of the substrates perlite-coconut fiber, coconut fiber-volcanic rock, vermiculite-perlite, and perlite-volcanic rock in conjunction with various culture media in in vitro plant regeneration from embryos was evaluated. The differentiation of adventitious shoots on substrates was scarcely observed or non-existent. Inducing the formation of shoots on… More >

Species of Trichoderma antagonistic to the root knot nematode (Meloidogyne incognita) in habanero pepper

    Herrera-Parra E1,2, J Ramos-Zapata1, J Cristóbal-Alejo3, J Tun-Suarez3, A Reyes-Ramírez3

    Phyton-International Journal of Experimental Botany, Vol.87, pp. 7-13, 2018, DOI:10.32604/phyton.2018.87.007

Abstract The root knot nematode Meloidogyne spp. is an important endoparasite limiting the cultivation of horticultural species and affecting the plants of at least 3000 species, including grasses, vegetables, ornamentals, fruit and forest. The aim of this study was to estimate the potential of three species of Trichoderma as antagonists of M. incognita in plants of Capsicum chinense under greenhouse conditions. A bioassay was established with plants of C. chinense previously inoculated with Trichoderma spp. and transplanted to pots with sterile substrate; the plants were subsequently inoculated with 300 infective second-stage larvae (J2) and 1000 larvae eggs of M. incognita. PGPR inoculation improves growth, nutrient uptake and physiological parameters of Capsicum chinense plants

    Castillo-Aguilar C de la C1, JJ Zúñiga-Aguilar2, AA Guzmán-Antonio2, R Garruña3

    Phyton-International Journal of Experimental Botany, Vol.86, pp. 199-204, 2017, DOI:10.32604/phyton.2017.86.199

Abstract The Habanero pepper (Capsicum chinense) is intensively cultivated in the Yucatan peninsula, México. Because of adverse environmental conditions, it required seeding in germination trays, from which six-week-old seedlings were transplanted to the soil. Adequate nursing and fertilization programmes were made to improve health and vigour before seedlings transplanting. During seed germination, we investigated the effects of inoculation with four plant growth-promoting rhizobacteria (PGPR) on growth, nutrient uptake and gas exchange of 8-week-old Capsicum chinense plants. Inoculation was made with Pseudomonas sp. -P61-, Pseudomonas sp. -A46-, Bacillus pumillus -R44-, and Paenibacillus polymyxa-BSP1.1-. The BSP1.1 strain produced the highest increase in… More >

    Candelero DJ1, AJ Cristóbal1, RA Reyes1, SJM Tun1, AMM Gamboa2, SE Ruíz1

    Phyton-International Journal of Experimental Botany, Vol.84, No.1, pp. 113-119, 2015, DOI:10.32604/phyton.2015.84.113

Abstract Fourteen native strains of Trichoderma spp. from wildand agricultural pathosystems in the state of Yucatan, Mexico, with growth-promoting ability of Capsicum chinense Jacq. seedlings were evaluated and antagonistic effect of their filtrate against second-stage juveniles (J2) of Meloidogyne incognita. The strains Th05-02 and Th27-08 showed the best significant effects on plant hight variable increments 55.57 and 47.62%, theTh07-04 with 29.48% more root length, theTh02-01 and Th07-04 isolates increased from 48.71 to 84.61% in volume radical and 53.40% of total dry biomass. Statistical analysis (p≤0.001) of Th43 and Th43-13-14 filtrates caused 100% mortality at 24 and 48h. In More >
