Quality control of ginseng mainly focuses on the contained saponins. In this work, the volatile components simultaneously from 12 Panax-derived herbal medicines were comparatively analyzed by an untargeted metabolomics approach using headspace solid-phase microextraction gas chromatography-mass spectrometry. Differential volatile components showed the potential to discriminate different ginseng species, which provided a new viewpoint for the precise quality control of ginseng.
