Summary

The rapid increase in sequenced genomes and genes from plastids and mitochondria has provided unprecedented opportunities to explore plant evolutionary history and taxonomy. These organelle-derived genetic datasets have become indispensable for inferring phylogenetic relationships among diverse plant taxa and refining systematic frameworks.

This special issue aims to showcase current advancements in this dynamic field. We welcome contributions that investigate the structure and evolution of plant organelle genomes, leveraging phylogenomics to resolve taxonomic challenges. Submissions exploring chloroplast and mitochondrial DNA barcoding as tools for species identification and evolutionary studies are particularly encouraged. Furthermore, the issue invites research that revisits phylogenetic relationships and systematics, supported by comparative analyses of plastid and mitochondrial genomes. Novel approaches that integrate organelle genomics with broader datasets, innovative methodologies, and comprehensive reviews synthesizing the state of the field are also welcomed.

By gathering cutting-edge research, this special issue seeks to highlight the critical role of organelle genomics in advancing plant systematics and taxonomy. It aims to inspire further exploration and collaboration, contributing to a deeper understanding of plant biodiversity and evolutionary relationships. Researchers are encouraged to contribute their findings to drive innovation in this field.
