Summary

This memorial issue is dedicated to Prof. Umezawa who contributed to discover many novel biologically active compounds, for instance, dehydroxymethylepoxyquinomicin, selective NF-κB inhibitor, conophylline, the differentiation inducer for pancreatic beta cells, and DTCM-glutarimide, the immune suppressor.

When he was professor in Keio University, I belonged to his laboratory as a doctoral student and studied about the mechanism of NF-κB inihibitors. He taught me the fundamentals of research.

He also taught me the importance of humaneness and the way ought to be. He encouraged many students and researchers to provide novel results and to become the human of integrity. So, I think that I am who I am today because of Prof. Umezawa.

We are profoundly saddened by his loss. However, his notable achievement and doctrine of research and humanity will be inherited to future generations. We cordially invite individuals who knew Professor Kazuo personally or were inspired by his pioneering contributions in fields such as Biochemistry, Cancer Research, Apoptosis, Molecular Biology, and Endocrinology to contribute to this special issue in his honor. In doing so, we aim to commemorate not only a great scientist but also a visionary whose impact has left an indelible mark on the lives of many.
