Summary

Malignant thoracic tumors include a variety of diseases that require a complex multidisciplinary approach for diagnostic and therapeutic purposes. Lung cancer, pleural mesothelioma, thymoma, and chest wall tumors are the most frequent thoracic tumors with which thoracic surgeons have to deal in their daily clinical practice. While lung cancer is extremely frequent and still represents the first cause of neoplastic death in both sexes, pleural mesothelioma, thymic tumors, and primary tumors of the chest wall are considered rare tumors with a poor prognosis. In almost all thoracic malignancies thoracic surgery still plays a pivotal role, although within a proper multidisciplinary approach, particularly after immunotherapy development. The aim of this special issue on diagnosis and treatment of malignant tumors of the chest is to focus on the present state of the art, soliciting surgical, oncologic, and radiotherapic contributions in order to define the best pathways for their cure. It is our pleasure to lead such a wide Special Issue and we look forward to receiving your valuable participation.
