Abstract Starch nanocrystals (SNC) were prepared from maize starch using ultrasound assisted acid hydrolysis. The process takes less time for the generation of SNC, which is advantageous over conventional acid hydrolysis. The synthesized SNC were characterized using X-ray diffraction, dynamic light scattering, zeta potential and transmission electron microscopy (TEM). Particle size and TEM data show that the particles were near to 150 nm, with oval morphology. The SNC with higher surface charge are obtained with this innovative approach as compared to conventional acid hydrolysis. Because of high surface charge and oval like morphology, the SNC performed More >

    Journal of Renewable Materials, Vol.8, No.3, pp. 251-273, 2020, DOI:10.32604/jrm.2020.08779 - 01 March 2020
(This article belongs to the Special Issue: Bio-composite Materials and Structures)
Abstract The creep behavior of bamboo due to the complicated influences of environment and stress will lead to a sustained increase in deformation, which serious effects the service performance of structures. To investigate the creep behavior of recombinant bamboo, twenty-four recombinant bamboo specimens were tested under lasting compressive and tensile loads at different load levels. The typical failure modes of recombinant bamboo under a lasting load at a high load level were buckling failure and brittle fracturing due to creep compressive creep and tensile creep development, respectively. At a high load level, the creep deformation of… More >

Abstract Biobased adsorbents are eco-friendly materials used for water and wastewater treatment and air cleaning. This research work explores the potential use of rice husk chars as a low-cost adsorbent for pollutants from water, such as methylene blue and ethinylestradiol. Rice husk chars are prepared by combustion of rice husks (RH-Char) or pre-treated rice husks (PT-Char). A third char (M-Char) supplied by a local company which uses rice husks as combustion material is also studied. The chars are characterized by field emission scanning electron microscopy (FE-SEM) in conjunction with energy dispersive X-ray spectroscopy (EDX), X-ray powder… More >

Abstract The plasticizer is an important polymer material additive. Non-toxic and environmentally friendly plasticizers are developed recently in order to decrease fossil fuel reserves, serious environmental pollution and the toxicity of phthalate esters. In this study, a new, efficient and environmentally friendly plasticizer of hydrogenated rosin dodecyl ester was prepared by an esterification reaction of hydrogenated rosin and dodecanol. The influences of different reaction conditions (including different catalysts, the catalyst concentration, the ratio of the reactants, reaction temperature, and reaction time) on the esterification yield are examined and discussed. Hydrogenated rosin dodecyl ester with 71.8% yield More >

Abstract This work reports a comprehensive study on poly (Ethylmethacrylateco-Acrylonitrile) Poly(EMA-AN) nanocomposites reinforced with a hybrid mixture of nanoreiforcements based on nanocrystals of cellulose (NCC) (1 or 5% wt) and halloysite nanotubes (HNTs) (1 or 5% wt). The morphology, thermal and mechanical properties of these nanocomposites were characterized. Homogeneous dispersion of the nanofillers has been shown by scanning electron microscopy. A significant increase of the rubbery modulus and glass transition temperature were obtained upon filler addition, due to the reduction of mobility of the matrix macromolecular chains. On the other hand, compared with the neat Poly(EMAAN), More >

    Journal of Renewable Materials, Vol.8, No.3, pp. 319-328, 2020, DOI:10.32604/jrm.2020.08696 - 01 March 2020
Abstract Cross laminated timber (CLT) panels, which are used as load bearing plates and shear panels in timber structures, can serve as roofs, walls and floors. Since timber is construction material with relatively less stiffness, the design of such structures is often driven by serviceability criteria, such as deflection and vibration. Therefore, accurate vibration and elastic properties are vital for engineered CLT products. The objective of this research is to explore a method to determine the natural frequencies of orthotropic wood plates efficiently and fast. The method was developed based on vibration signal processing by wavelet More >
