Submission Deadline: 31 March 2024 (closed) Submit to Special Issue

Guest Editors

Hong Lei, Professor, School of Chemistry and Material Engineering, Zhejiang A&F University, China
Dr. Lei received her first doctoral degree in University of Nancy 1(France) in 2009,and the second doctoral degree in Nanjing Forestry University in 2010. Her research interests have focused on the synthesis, structure, development and application of bio-based and formaldehyde-based wood adhesives. On the basis of the study on the mechanism of bio-based adhesives by the help of model compounds, Dr. Lei has developed some environment-friendly adhesives with good or acceptable water resistance from soy protein, lignin, starch or tannin. She has studied the reaction and performances of co-condensed formaldehyde wood adhesives, such as melamine-urea-formaldehyde, phenol-urea-formaldehyde, and phenol- melamine-urea-formaldehyde. On the basis of the breakthrough on the preparation of modified resin adhesives, the particleboard with good water resistance have been produced in industry. She has done some work on the development and application of formaldehyde-based adhesives prepared with concentrated formaldehyde.

Dr. Xuedong Xi, School of Materials Science and Engineering, Southwest Forestry University, China
Dr. Xi received his doctoral degree in University of Lorraine (France) in 2020,his research interests have focused on the developing environment-friendly wood adhesives and expand their more application, including:
(1) Modification of traditional formaldehyde-based resin adhesives.
(2) Novel synthetic resin adhesives for wood and wood based composite bonding.
(3) Bio-based adhesives (protein, lignin, cellulose, tannin, starch, sugars, et al) with excellent environmental friendliness, adhesive strength, water resistance.
(4) Preparation and application of biomass-based non-isocyanate polyurethanes.
(5) Bio-based plastics, foams and composite materials.
(6) Wood surface chemical modification for constructing improved glued interface and bonding performance.

Summary

Wood, as a material that we are all familiar with, which has been used by humans for a long history, such as building materials, fuel, tools, etc. With the development of science and technology, the utilization of wood has been expanded, extended. Especially in nowadays the environment protection is high-profile topic, wood as a renewable resource is more also concerned. For example, using wood to prepare composite materials, boards, and also to extract tannins, lignin, nano-celluloses, etc. many extracts from wood can also be used for preparing valuable products and to use as alternatives for petroleum-based chemicals. So more environmental-friendly processing or techniques for the preparation of all these valuable products are also vital research contents.

This special issue “Eco-friendly Wood-based Composites and Materials: From green raw materials to green preparation and application” is dedicated to the most recent advances in research of the green preparation and application of the wood or wood extracts based materials. We invite scientists and investigators to contribute original research and review articles, which address the topics of the special issue.

Potential topics include (but are not limited) to:

1. Extraction, modification and application of wood components (such as cellulose, tannin, lignin, extracts, etc.);

2. Preparation and application of environmentally friendly wood composite materials and panels;

3. Environment-friendly resin and bio-based adhesives for wood bonding;

4. Preparation and application on new materials based on wood raw materials.
