The International Conference on Computational & Experimental Engineering and Sciences, Vol.11, No.2, pp. 29-30, 2009, DOI:10.3970/icces.2009.011.029
Abstract An ultrasonic propagation imaging (UPI) system consisted of a Q-switched Nd-YAG pulsed laser with 20 Hz-repetition rate and a motorized tilting mirror system for rapid scanning of target was developed. The system which requires neither reference data nor fixed focal length could be used for health monitoring of curved structures. If combined with a fiber acoustic wave PZT (FAWPZT) sensor, it could be used to perform inspection on hot target structures, which present formidable challenges to the usage of contact piezoelectric transducers mainly due to the Curie temperature limitation of transducers and debonding problem due to the mismatch of coefficient… More >

The International Conference on Computational & Experimental Engineering and Sciences, Vol.11, No.2, pp. 31-32, 2009, DOI:10.3970/icces.2009.011.031
Abstract The aim of this paper was to establish the realistic breathing patterns in different exercise conditions by experimental measurement. Generally, the human inhalation rate varies from 15 L/min at rest to 135 L/min for intense exercise and the breathing cycles are varied with different exercise conditions. Previous author have used symmetric Weibel configuration to establish three realistic breathing patterns, i. e., resting (inhalation rate, 15 L/min), light activity (inhalation rate, 30 L/min), and moderate exercise (inhalation rate, 60 L/min). In this study, in addition to reconstructing the three realistic breathing patterns of above mention, we expand the establishment of the… More >

    Dong-Hoon Kim1, Sang-Wook Lee1, Dong-Ik Cheon1, Hwa-Suk Oh1
The International Conference on Computational & Experimental Engineering and Sciences, Vol.11, No.2, pp. 33-34, 2009, DOI:10.3970/icces.2009.011.033
Abstract In general, accurate attitude information is essential to perform the mission. Two algorithms are well-known to determine the attitude through two or more vector observations. One is deterministic method such as TRIAD algorithm, the other is optimal method such as QUEST algorithm. This paper suggests the idea to improve performance of the TRIAD algorithm and to determine the attitude by combination of different sensors. First, we change the attitude matrix to Euler angle instead of using orthogonalization method and also use covariance in place of variance, then apply an unbiased minimum variance formula for more accurate solutions. We also suggest… More >

    Doan An1, Jae-Woo Lee2, Sang Ho Kim1, Yung-Hwan Byun1
The International Conference on Computational & Experimental Engineering and Sciences, Vol.11, No.2, pp. 35-36, 2009, DOI:10.3970/icces.2009.011.035
Abstract As analysis methods for the individual CFD (Computational Fluid Dynamics) and FEM (Finite Element Method) analyses are matured, many researches are going on recently and several commercial software are available and ready to use, but the application of the method is limited to the specific or relatively simple geometry. When the configuration geometry is complex or operating conditions are difficult to impose, the meshing and re-meshing process between aerodynamic analysis and FEM analysis is not an easy task and commercial software have limitations to be applied to the specific problems.
Therefore, in this study, the aerodynamics-structure coupled analysis for the… More >

Estimation of dynamic properties for satellite actuator test bed

    Sang-Wook Lee1, Dong-Hoon Kim, Dong-Ik Cheon, Hwa-Suk Oh
The International Conference on Computational & Experimental Engineering and Sciences, Vol.11, No.2, pp. 37-38, 2009, DOI:10.3970/icces.2009.011.037
Abstract An air-bearing test bed has been developed for ground simulation. It has a table-top configuration capable of floating 250 kg satellite. Estimation of the moment of inertia of test platform has been performed by adapting least square method. A standard mass has been applied on the platform to produce the required torque by gravity. Difficulty in measuring the yaw MOI has been avoided by starting maneuvers on a tilted orientation to improve the condition of the regression matrix. Convergence to the correct inertia and mass imbalance value was improved by stacking the good conditioned data. More >

Risk modeling by CHAID decision tree algorithm

    A.S. Koyuncugil1, N. Ozgulbas2
The International Conference on Computational & Experimental Engineering and Sciences, Vol.11, No.2, pp. 39-46, 2009, DOI:10.3970/icces.2009.011.039
Abstract In this paper, a data mining model for detecting financial and operational risk indicators by CHAID Decision Tree is presenting. The identification of the risk factors by clarifying the relationship between the variables defines the discovery of knowledge from the financial and operational variables. Automatic and estimation oriented information discovery process coincides the definition of data mining. During the formation of model; an easy to understand, easy to interpret and easy to apply utilitarian model that is far from the requirement of theoretical background is targeted by the discovery of the implicit relationships between the data and the identification of… More >

Experimental/numerical analysis on the thermal-induced warpage of ultra-thin chip-on-flex (UTCOF) interconnects

    Su-Tsai Lu1,2, Wen-Hwa Chen1
The International Conference on Computational & Experimental Engineering and Sciences, Vol.11, No.2, pp. 47-48, 2009, DOI:10.3970/icces.2009.011.047
Abstract For future growing applications in flexible display and wearable electronics, the need of three-dimensional stacking flexible interconnects increases rapidly. One of the core technologies is the development of ultra-thin chip-on-flex (UTCOF) interconnects owing to its high-density and flexibility as chips are thinned down and joined on a flexible substrate using anisotropic conductive adhesive (ACA) (Chen et al., 1999; Jokinen and Ristolainen, 2002; Lu et al., 2006; Lu and Chen, 2008). However, very little work has been devoted to the study of ACA material properties on the thermal-induced warpage for UTCOF interconnects and becomes the main aim of this work.

A meshless solution of binary alloy solidification

Božidar Šarler, Gregor Kosec, Robert Vertnik
The International Conference on Computational & Experimental Engineering and Sciences, Vol.11, No.2, pp. 53-54, 2009, DOI:10.3970/icces.2009.011.053
Abstract This paper explores the application of the mesh-free Local Radial Basis Function Collocation Method (LRBFCM) [1] in solution of coupled heat transfer and fluid flow problems associated with solidification of a binary alloy. The involved temperature, velocity, species and pressure fields are represented on overlapping sub-domains through collocation by using multiquadrics Radial Basis Functions (RBF). The involved first and second derivatives of the fields are calculated from the respective derivatives of the RBF’s. The energy and momentum equations are solved throughexplicit time stepping. The pressure-velocitycouplingis calculated iteratively, with pressure correction, predicted from the local continuity equation violation [2,3]. The solution… More >

On the shear influence on the free vibration behavior of magneto-electro-elastic beam

    A Milazzo1, C. Orlando2, A. Alaimo3
The International Conference on Computational & Experimental Engineering and Sciences, Vol.11, No.2, pp. 55-62, 2009, DOI:10.3970/icces.2009.011.055
Abstract A magneto-electro-elastic Timoshenko beam model is presented and employed to study the effect of the shear strain on the free vibration behavior of the beam. Once the differential governing equation for Timoshenko magneto-electro-elastic beam is derived, the Euler-Bernoulli model is obtained by letting be zero some of the governing equation coefficients. Results for the Timoshenko and Euler-Bernoulli beam are presented in comparison with two-dimensional finite element computation. More >
