Abstract The behavior of two immiscible low-viscosity liquids differing in density and viscosity in a vertical flat layer undergoing modulated rotation is experimentally studied. The layer has a circular axisymmetric boundary. In the absence of modulation of the rotation speed, the interphase boundary has the shape of a short axisymmetric cylinder. A new effect has been discovered, under the influence of rotation speed modulation, the interface takes on a new dynamic equilibrium state. A more viscous liquid covers the end boundaries of the layer in the form of thin films, which have the shape of round… More >

    Xiao Sun1, Jiangbo Tong1, Yuliang Zhang2,*, Haibing Cai3, Wen Zhou4, Xiaoqi Jia5, Litao Ou6
    FDMP-Fluid Dynamics & Materials Processing, Vol.20, No.4, pp. 725-737, 2024, DOI:10.32604/fdmp.2023.045541 - 28 March 2024
Abstract Centrifugal pumps are widely used in the metallurgy, coal, and building sectors. In order to study the hydraulic characteristics of a closed impeller centrifugal pump during its shutdown in the so-called power frequency and frequency conversion modes, experiments were carried to determine the characteristic evolution of parameters such as speed, inlet and outlet pressure, head, flow rate and shaft power. A quasi-steady-state method was also used to further investigate these transient behaviors. The results show that, compared to the power frequency input, the performance parameter curves for the frequency conversion input are less volatile and More >

Influence of Bottom Inclination on the Flow Structure in a Rotating Convective Layer

Andrei Vasiliev, Andrei Sukhanovskii*, Elena Popova
    FDMP-Fluid Dynamics & Materials Processing, Vol.20, No.4, pp. 739-748, 2024, DOI:10.32604/fdmp.2024.048092 - 28 March 2024
(This article belongs to the Special Issue: Advanced Problems in Fluid Mechanics)
Abstract The formation of convective flows in a rotating cylindrical layer with an inclined bottom and free surface is studied. Convection is driven by localized cooling at the center of the upper free surface and by rim heating at the bottom near the sidewall. The horizontal temperature difference in a rotating layer leads to the formation of a convective flow with a complex structure. The mean meridional circulation, consisting of three cells, provides a strongly non-uniform differential rotation. As a result of the instability of the main cyclonic zonal flow, the train of baroclinic waves appears… More >

    FDMP-Fluid Dynamics & Materials Processing, Vol.20, No.4, pp. 749-769, 2024, DOI:10.32604/fdmp.2023.042566 - 28 March 2024
(This article belongs to the Special Issue: Advances in Solid Waste Processing and Recycling Technologies for Civil Engineering Materials)
Abstract The mechanical properties of cementitious sand and gravel damming material have been experimentally determined by means of microscopic SEM (Scanning Electron Microscopy) image analysis. The results show that the combination of fly ash and water can fill the voids in cemented sand and gravel test blocks because of the presence of hydrated calcium silicate and other substances; thereby, the compactness and mechanical properties of these materials can be greatly improved. For every 10 kg/m3 increase in the amount of cementitious material, the density increases by about 2%, and the water content decreases by 0.2%. The amount More >

    Yuanjun Dai1,2, Jingan Cui1, Baohua Li1,*, Cong Wang1, Kunju Shi1
    FDMP-Fluid Dynamics & Materials Processing, Vol.20, No.4, pp. 771-786, 2024, DOI:10.32604/fdmp.2023.029584 - 28 March 2024
Abstract A numerical method has been used to analyze the flow field related to a NACA 0015 airfoil with and without a flap and assess the influence of the flap height and angle on the surface pressure coefficient, lift coefficient, and drag coefficient. The numerical results demonstrate that the flap can effectively improve the lift coefficient of the airfoil; however, at small attack angles, its influence is significantly reduced. When the angle of attack exceeds the critical stall angle and the flap height is 1.5% of the chord length, the influence of the flap becomes very More >

    Mariya Shiryaeva1, Mariya Subbotina2, Stanislav Subbotin1,*
    FDMP-Fluid Dynamics & Materials Processing, Vol.20, No.4, pp. 787-802, 2024, DOI:10.32604/fdmp.2024.048165 - 28 March 2024
(This article belongs to the Special Issue: Advanced Problems in Fluid Mechanics)
Abstract This work is devoted to the experimental study of inertial wave regimes in a non-uniform rotating cylinder with antiparallel inclined ends. In this setting, the cross-section of the cylinder is divided into two regions where the fluid depth increases or decreases with radius. Three different regimes are found: inertial wave attractor, global oscillations (the cavity’s resonant modes) and regime of symmetric reflection of wave beams. In linear wave regimes, a steady single vortex elongated along the rotation axis is generated. The location of the wave’s interaction with the sloping ends determines the vortex position and More >

Fei Wang, Qinpeng Meng, Jinchi Zhao, Xin Wang, Yuhong Liu, Qianru Zhang*
    FDMP-Fluid Dynamics & Materials Processing, Vol.20, No.4, pp. 829-846, 2024, DOI:10.32604/fdmp.2023.026917 - 28 March 2024
Abstract Buildings with large open spaces in which chemicals are handled are often exposed to the risk of explosions. Computational fluid dynamics is a useful and convenient way to investigate contaminant dispersion in such large spaces. The turbulent Schmidt number (Sct) concept has typically been used in this regard, and most studies have adopted a default value. We studied the concentration distribution for sulfur hexafluoride (SF6) assuming different emission rates and considering the effect of Sct. Then we examined the same problem for a light gas by assuming hydrogen gas (H2) as the contaminant. When SF6 was considered as More >

Anastasia Bushueva, Olga Vlasova, Denis Polezhaev*
    FDMP-Fluid Dynamics & Materials Processing, Vol.20, No.4, pp. 847-857, 2024, DOI:10.32604/fdmp.2024.048271 - 28 March 2024
(This article belongs to the Special Issue: Advanced Problems in Fluid Mechanics)
Abstract The steady flow in a Hele-Shaw cell filled with fluids with a high viscosity contrast in the presence of fluid oscillations is experimentally studied. The control of oscillatory dynamics of multiphase systems with interfaces is a challenging technological problem. We consider miscible (water and glycerol) and immiscible (water and high-viscosity silicone oil PMS-1000) fluids under subsonic oscillations perpendicular to the interface. Observations show that the interface shape depends on the amplitude and frequency of oscillations. The interface is undisturbed only in the absence of oscillations. Under small amplitudes, the interface between water and glycerol widens… More >
