Summary
To mitigate climate change and significantly reduce greenhouse gas emissions (GHG), various countries are shifting from fossil-based energy systems to low-carbon economies. Renewable energy such as wind, solar, geothermal, tidal, biomass, and hydropower play a crucial role in this transition by providing more sustainable sources of energy at lower to no GHG emissions. However, the intermittency and variability of these sources pose challenges in ensuring a stable and reliable supply of energy. Energy storage technologies such as advanced batteries, pumped hydro storage, and green hydrogen address these challenges by balancing supply and demand, stabilizing the electricity grid, supporting decentralized energy systems, and decarbonizing various sectors.
This special issue aims to provide a platform to discuss the most recent advances in energy storage as a transition technology toward achieving low-carbon economies and a more sustainable future. It invites engineers, researchers, practitioners, and policymakers to present their original research findings, challenges, and best practices on all energy storage topics.
High-quality papers are solicited in, but are not limited to, the following topics:
• Energy storage technologies
• Power-to-X
• Energy Conversion
