    CMC-Computers, Materials & Continua, Vol.31, No.1, pp. 1-16, 2012, DOI:10.3970/cmc.2012.031.001
Abstract The electromagnetic design and performance analysis of dual/ multi-band metamaterial frequency selective surface (FSS) structures have been carried out for radome applications in microwave and millimeter wave frequency regimes. The proposed metamaterial FSS structure, consisting of cascaded MNG (mu-nega -tive) and DPS (double positive) layers, exhibits dual-band transmission responses at V-band and W-band. Excellent transmission efficiency (more than 95%) has been obtained over the frequency range 45.8-53.1 GHz at first resonance, and from 93.0-97.1 GHz at second resonance. The incorporation of additional DPS layer to the proposed metamaterial-FSS structure facilitates multiband bandpass characteristics at 30 GHz (in Ka-band), 64 GHz… More >

Creating Three-Dimensional Models to Investigate Brittle Fracture in Polycrystalline Metals

    G.E. Smith1, A.G. Crocker1, P.E.J. Flewitt2,3, S Mahalingam2
    CMC-Computers, Materials & Continua, Vol.31, No.1, pp. 17-36, 2012, DOI:10.3970/cmc.2012.031.017
Abstract Three-dimensional models with irregular grain geometries and appropriate physical properties are needed to investigate fracture in polycrystalline metals and alloys. Creating such models is challenging but achievable using a two-stage process, suitable for any polycrystal. The processes described in this paper are illustrated by examples of brittle fracture in ferritic steel, zinc and nickel. The predicted crack path in a model is compared with the grain boundary fracture seen in three point bend specimens of nickel embrittled by sulphur. More >

Transient Wave Propagation in a Functionally Graded Slab and Multilayered Medium Subjected to Dynamic Loadings

    Chien-Ching Ma1,2, Yi-Hsien Lin2, Shih-Hao Lin2
    CMC-Computers, Materials & Continua, Vol.31, No.1, pp. 37-64, 2012, DOI:10.3970/cmc.2012.031.037
Abstract In this article, the transient response in a functionally graded material (FGM) slab is analyzed by Laplace transform technique. The numerical Laplace inversion (Durbin's formula) is used to calculate the dynamic behavior of the FGM slab. The slab is subjected an uniform loading at the upper surface, and the lower surface are assumed to be traction-free or fixed conditions. The analytical solutions are presented in the transform domain and the numerical Laplace inversion is performed to obtain the transient response in time domain. To take the accuracy and computational efficiency in consideration, Durbin's method is suitable for calculating the long-time… More >

    CMC-Computers, Materials & Continua, Vol.31, No.1, pp. 65-86, 2012, DOI:10.3970/cmc.2012.031.065
Abstract A method to reduce the sedimentation of the ferromagnetic particles in magnetorheological fluids (MRFs) is studied with numerical simulation and experiment. It shows that, making use of the magnetic field generated by a permanent magnet put simply above an MRF, the sedimentation of the particles in the MRF can be reduced remarkably. The magnetic force on a ferromagnetic particle and that on a particle chain are computed with the finite element (FE) code ANSYS. It reveals that the magnetic force on a particle-chain is much larger than the sum of the magnetic force on each individual particle in the chain… More >
