Summary

As transportation systems continue to evolve, the integration of advanced communication technologies has become critical for enhancing road safety, traffic efficiency, and the overall driving experience. Vehicular Ad Hoc Networks (VANETs) represent a significant innovation in this domain, enabling vehicles to communicate with one another and with roadside infrastructure, creating a more intelligent and connected transportation ecosystem. As a fundamental component of Intelligent Transportation Systems (ITS), VANETs support essential functions such as collision avoidance, dynamic traffic management, vehicle automation, and in-vehicle services, all of which are central to the future of smart mobility. By enabling cooperative driving, delivering real-time data, supporting vehicle-to-everything (V2X) communication, and ensuring robust privacy protection, VANETs are foundational to modern ITS, transforming the way transportation systems operate.

The Special Issue, "Smart Roads, Smarter Cars: The Evolution of Vehicular Ad Hoc Networks," aims to highlight cutting-edge advancements in Vehicular Ad Hoc Networks (VANETs) and their transformative role in intelligent transportation systems. It will address key challenges related to real-time communication, privacy preservation, and system reliability within connected vehicle environments. This issue will provide a platform for researchers, engineers, and industry experts to showcase their latest research and solutions on the design, development, and implementation of efficient and secure VANET technologies in modern transportation ecosystem.

The potential topics include but are not limited to:

-Security, Privacy, and Trust in VANETs

-Switching and Routing Technologies in VANETs

-Smart Mobility Management in VANETs and ITS

-Integrated and Distributed Architectures in VANETs

-Software Defined Network Technologies for VANETs

-Human-Computer Interaction in ITS and VANETs

-Artificial Intelligence Solutions for VANETs: Basic Mahine Learning, Deep Learning, Swarm Intelligence, Reinforcement Learning and Federated Learning.

-Effective and Robust Applications in VANETs: Safety, Traffic Management and Infotainment

-Integration with Edge and Cloud Computing: Edge Computing for VANETs

-Task Offloading for cloud computing

-Resource Management and Allocation in VANETs: Onboard Resource Management, Resource Provisioning and Optimization

-Advanced Wireless Technologies in VANETs: 5G, 6G, LEO Satellite, Millimeter-Wave, VLC, RIS, etc.
