Summary

The growing challenges of urbanization—from resource management to environmental sustainability—demand innovative, technology-driven solutions in city planning and governance. This research area is crucial as it explores how Generative AI can transform smart city ecosystems by generating actionable insights, optimizing urban infrastructures, and fostering adaptive, resilient communities while addressing ethical and security concerns.

The aim of this Special Issue is to explore how Generative AI can revolutionize smart city development, operations, and citizen interactions. It provides a comprehensive platform for discussing theoretical foundations and technological advancements in AI-driven urban innovation. Topics include infrastructure design, energy management, transportation, public safety, and personalized citizen services. The issue also addresses ethical, societal, and governance challenges while fostering interdisciplinary collaboration among researchers, urban planners, policymakers, and technologists. Contributions from academia, industry, and government are encouraged to offer a holistic perspective on transforming urban ecosystems with Generative AI.
