Summary

The intricate interplay between the heart and kidneys plays a critical role in maintaining metabolic homeostasis and organ function, particularly under pathological conditions. This special issue aims to investigate the underlying cellular and molecular mechanisms driving the interactions between cardiac and renal systems, with a focus on metabolic disorders, organ injury, and repair processes. By bringing together pioneering research from international experts, this issue seeks to provide insights into how disruptions in the heart-kidney axis contribute to conditions such as metabolic syndrome, heart failure, renal injury, and cardiorenal syndromes. We welcome contributions that explore the molecular pathways that regulate these inter-organ relationships and their implications for disease progression and therapeutic interventions.

Key areas of focus include, but are not limited to:

1. Metabolic Regulation in the Heart-Kidney Axis:

- Investigating how metabolic dysfunction, such as insulin resistance and lipid metabolism disorders, impacts heart and kidney interactions.

- Exploring the cellular and molecular mechanisms by which heart and kidney tissues communicate during metabolic stress and contribute to diseases like heart failure and kidney injury.

2. Heart and Kidney Injury: Molecular Mechanisms of Damage and Repair:

- Understanding the cellular pathways involved in heart and kidney damage, with emphasis on oxidative stress, inflammation, and fibrosis in cardiac and renal tissues.

- Exploring mechanisms of tissue repair, including autophagy, regeneration, and extracellular matrix remodeling, and their implications for therapeutic strategies.

3. Cardiorenal Syndrome: Cellular Communication and Signaling Pathways:

- Elucidating the signaling pathways that link heart and kidney dysfunction in cardiorenal syndrome, with a focus on hormonal, neural, and molecular crosstalk.

- Investigating how altered signaling between the two organs exacerbates conditions like heart failure, chronic kidney disease, and hypertension.

4. Heart-Kidney Metabolic Syndrome:

- Exploring the cellular and molecular mechanisms that drive the metabolic syndrome, focusing on the mutual effects of obesity, diabetes, and hypertension on cardiac and renal function.

- Studying the role of adipokines, cytokines, and metabolic pathways in linking heart and kidney dysfunction in metabolic disorders.

5. Molecular Basis of Therapeutic Interventions in Heart-Kidney Interactions:

- Investigating novel therapeutic approaches targeting the heart-kidney axis, including gene therapy, stem cell-based treatments, and metabolic modulators.

- Exploring how emerging therapies can prevent or mitigate damage in heart and kidney tissues by targeting specific molecular pathways.

This special issue aims to deepen our understanding of the cellular and molecular processes underlying the heart-kidney axis, providing a platform for interdisciplinary collaboration that bridges cardiology, nephrology, and molecular biology. By highlighting the latest findings and emerging challenges in this field, the issue strives to pave the way for innovative therapeutic strategies that address the complex interactions between cardiac and renal health, especially in the context of metabolic dysfunction and chronic disease.
