Summary
Bacterial vaginosis (BV) and other obstetric and gynecologic infections have significant implications for women's health, affecting cellular and molecular processes within the reproductive system. This special issue aims to explore the underlying mechanisms through which these infections influence cellular responses, immune functions, and the overall microbiome composition. By compiling innovative research from leading experts in the field, this issue seeks to elucidate the complex interactions between bacterial infections and women's reproductive health.
Key areas of focus include, but are not limited to:
1. Cellular and Molecular Mechanisms of Bacterial Vaginosis:
- Investigating the microbial community dynamics and how specific pathogens alter the vaginal ecosystem.
- Exploring the cellular signaling pathways through which BV affects epithelial integrity and immune responses.
2. Host-Pathogen Interactions in Gynecologic Infections:
- Examining how host cells recognize and respond to pathogenic invasions, particularly through innate immune mechanisms.
- Understanding the molecular pathways involved in inflammation and tissue response to infection.
3. Antibiotic Resistance and Immune Response:
- Analyzing the development of antibiotic resistance in gynecologic infections and its cellular implications.
- Exploring the role of immune modulation in enhancing susceptibility to infections and potential therapeutic targets.
4. Microbiome Stability and Infections:
- Investigating how disruptions in the vaginal microbiome contribute to BV and other infections.
- Studying the potential for probiotics and microbiome-based therapies to restore balance and prevent infections.
5. Impact of Infections on Pregnancy:
- Exploring the molecular effects of gynecologic infections on pregnancy outcomes, including premature birth and fetal development.
- Examining the inflammatory responses triggered by infections in the maternal-fetal interface.
We welcome original research articles, comprehensive reviews, and perspectives that delve into the multifaceted roles of bacterial infections in women's health through molecular and cellular mechanisms. By highlighting the latest discoveries and challenges in the field, this issue strives to inform novel therapeutic strategies and interventions for managing obstetric and gynecologic infections.
