Summary

Chronic diseases such as Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease (COPD), atherosclerosis, and cardiovascular diseases are leading causes of morbidity and mortality worldwide. These conditions share common cellular and molecular mechanisms, such as inflammation, oxidative stress, and dysregulated cell signaling, which drive their onset and progression. Understanding the underlying mechanisms at a cellular and molecular level is crucial for identifying novel therapeutic targets and biomarkers to improve patient outcomes.

This special issue aims to explore the intricate cellular processes involved in the development and progression of COPD, atherosclerosis, and cardiovascular diseases. We invite submissions that provide new insights into the molecular pathways driving inflammation, immune responses, tissue damage, and repair, as well as research on novel therapeutic strategies aimed at modulating these pathways.

Topics of interest include, but are not limited to:

1. Cellular Mechanisms in COPD:

   - The role of inflammation and oxidative stress in COPD progression.

   - Molecular pathways involved in lung tissue damage and repair.

   - The influence of cellular senescence and apoptosis in COPD pathogenesis.

2. Molecular Pathways in Atherosclerosis:

   - Endothelial dysfunction and its impact on atherosclerosis development.

   - The role of immune cells in plaque formation and progression.

   - Molecular mechanisms driving lipid metabolism and foam cell formation.

3. Cardiovascular Diseases: Cellular and Molecular Insights:

   - Signaling pathways involved in cardiac remodeling and heart failure.

   - The role of inflammation and fibrosis in cardiovascular diseases.

   - Molecular mechanisms underlying ischemic heart disease and myocardial injury.

4. Shared Mechanisms between COPD, Atherosclerosis, and Cardiovascular Diseases:

   - Cross-talk between systemic inflammation and oxidative stress in chronic diseases.

   - Common pathways driving metabolic dysregulation and comorbidities.

   - The role of immune system dysfunction in both respiratory and cardiovascular diseases.

5. Therapeutic Targets and Biomarkers:

   - Identification of novel biomarkers for early detection and progression monitoring of chronic diseases.

   - Targeting inflammation, oxidative stress, and metabolic pathways for therapeutic interventions.

   - Emerging therapeutic strategies, including gene therapy and molecular interventions, aimed at mitigating chronic disease progression.
