Rocío Guil Bozal
Professor, Department of Psychology, University of Cádiz, Cádiz, Spain

Biography: Dr. Rocío Guil, (PhD) is a Professor of Social Psychology at the University of Cádiz. She is a founding member and director of the Emotional Intelligence Research Group HUM-843 and the Emotional Intelligence Laboratory. Additionally, she is a founding member of the University Institute of Research for Sustainable Social Development (INDESS) at the University of Cádiz, and she is responsible for the associated group "Psychological, Social, and Emotional Factors Related to Quality of Life" at the Biomedical Research and Innovation Institute (INIBICA). Dr. Guil has published several articles and books on the topics of emotional intelligence and emotion regulation, and she has supervised numerous doctoral theses. She is currently involved in research projects on the quality of life in women diagnosed with breast cancer.

Paloma Gil-Olarte Márquez
Professor, University of Cádiz, Cádiz, Spain

Biography: Dr. Gil-Olarte (PhD) is a Professor of Social Psychology at the University of Cádiz. She is a founding member of the Emotional Intelligence Research Group HUM-843, the Emotional Intelligence Laboratory, and the University Institute of Research for Sustainable Social Development (INDESS) at the University of Cádiz. Her research has focused on the study of Emotional Intelligence and the development of emotional competencies and psychosocial and organizational aspects, signing Collaboration Agreements with the Municipal Women's Foundation of the Cádiz City Council and the Cádiz Football Club Foundation. She currently focuses her research studies on the study of the quality of life of women with breast cancer, promoting interventions in emotional competence that allow them to improve their personal, social, and occupational well-being.

Leidy Tatiana Ordoñez-Mora
Research Associate, Full Professor, Faculty of Health, Santiago de Cali University (Colombia)

Biography: She is a professor at the Faculty of Health of the Universidad Santiago de Cali, an associate researcher, and the leader of the health and movement research group. She has developed work associated with chronic pain and biopsychosocial processes, as well as research on quality of life. Additionally, she has conducted studies on the educational component of pain management in cancer patients and survivors. She has conducted research in various population groups focusing on quality of life and physical function.

Summary

Cancer continues to be one of the global health challenges, according to global statistics. An estimated 19.3 million new cases of cancer were reported in 2020, with approximately 10 million cancer-related deaths. Both the diagnosis and the adjuvant treatments administered impact not only the physical health but also the mental health and quality of life of the patients who suffer from it. Multidisciplinary evaluations of quality of life will allow quality healthcare to be provided to the health status of patients during this chronic disease, identifying associated comorbidities and offering more individualized assistance.

 

This special issue aims to propose new approaches regarding the psychological, medical, and functional factors that affect the physical and mental health and quality of life of cancer patients and survivors to develop novel intervention proposals that improve the quality of life and health status of this clinical population.
