The detection tool should be capable of detecting directly the relative distance and direction between the relief well and the blowout well. Its detection accuracy should also meet the engineering demand of drilling a relief well. Using the working principle of a proposed detection tool, this paper analyzes the spread and attenuation laws of the current injected by a single-electrode or three-electrode array in the relief well. The present paper also considers the casing of the blowout well, and then develops a model for the distribution of the alternating magnetic field generated by the current in the blowout well casing, and lastly confirms the method of computation of the relative distance and orientation of the relief well to blowout well. The results of the present research can also be used as theoretical foundations for developing the guidance tool for the directional drilling of the relief well.
